Made a breakthrough, need advice on consistency (videos)

I was getting these really low hook shots with crazy dynamic loft numbers, but I figured out that my grip was just way too strong as a result of an old compensation. I weakened my grip and tried to stay more centered, and I haven't had any more low hooks.

I went to a range with trackman twice with a buddy recently, and I was really hitting well. I had way more consistency than usual. Best of all, I've struggled with an OTT plane for years, but on trackman, my average path was 8-10. I realize thats too in to out, but I was making great contact and hitting playable shots. Fast forward to this afternoon at the range. I was coming over the top again and making terrible contact. I hit about 30 good balls, and then I just totally lost it. I stopped rotating well, my wrist started breaking down in the top of the backswing, and I started shanking and slicing the ball with a terrible OTT swing. I only intended to hit 40 balls on my lunch break, but I ended up hitting 160 trying to find my swing again. At the end, I finally got it back by really limiting/shortening my backswing.

When I'm swinging poorly, it's because my wrist breaks (and bows back as far as it can) at the top of the backswing. I think this is a result of swinging too hard, rushing the backswing, or not letting my body rotate enough. Before this afternoon, I'd hit hundreds of balls without this problem, but somehow it snuck back up on me. Any advice for making my new swing my default swing? I really need to figure out how to make my good swing my default so I stop falling back into old (bad) habits.

This is my current swing when things are working well. Maybe someone will see something that may be causing my inconsistencies. I'll try to get a video of the bad swing next time it happens.

First off I think you ought to decide what Over the Top means to you. In each of these swings your downswing is above your backswing. According to some this is over the top.

That said, most people use over the top to mean that the club path, or swing direction if you have a launch monitor, is excessively out to in. This you do not have. With a path that can be 8-10 in to out I doubt seriously you could have a bad day swinging and change your path by more than 10 degrees.

All of which means that you’re attacking the ball from too far inside. Your takeaway is too far inside and you do move your hands out in transition. And you early extend. The shanks are caused by the outward hand path and the early extension working in concert with a face that is newly more open thanks to a weaker grip.

Take the club more outside. Get the club, and yours hands, laying down in transition. Fix the early extension.

It’ll take a bunch of work but you’ve got a lot of good stuff here. You’ll get it if you work for it.

Those two days with Trackman, the data shows I was pretty consistently in to out with an average of around 8-10. However, I was slicing/fading at the range, and really felt like I was coming over the top. I don't have the data to back it up, but I sincerely believe that my path changed by well over 10 degrees that day, which is very difficult to adjust for in terms of playing decent golf.

That second time on the trackman, I started trying to bring the club outside better, or I guess a more accurate way to explain it is that I tried to keep the clubhead on the target line longer, and that did improve my path, but I never got it down more than to about 6 degrees. One issue is that my contact and shot shape was so good I was afraid to change things too much. I certainly didn't have that issue at the range yesterday. It's frustrating. Those two days with the trackman I really only had one or two bad shots (shots I would not want to play on a course) and I hit hundreds of balls. I was even thinking about getting fitted for new irons. But yesterday I could barely get the ball in the air.

So any advice on what to work on first? I did see the early extension in the videos. I could also see that my backswing plane was more inside than my downswing plane. I didn't notice my hands getting outside in transition, but my buddy did say that to me. I guess backswing is the place to start? When I stay more outside, I feel like my arms get separated from my body. I also can't figure out how videos of good iron swings show the club getting so vertical when my club looks so flat/around my body.

Do this. For under a buck get a driveway marker and stick it into the butt of the grip. Or spend 162 and get a planemate.

Fix the inside takeway and it will fix a lot of things.
