Back from Scotland!
Booked 5 rounds in 6 days and wow, the one day off was the day it was pouring rain. We were inside doing a whisky tour and enjoying the samples. All the golf days had delightful weather, and the rain held off until well after the rounds in some evenings.
Flights were delayed and our luggage went missing, so we had to rent clubs for the first day. Didn’t get my clubs until day 2 and the big suitcase until day 5 so I had to buy pro shop clothing, handwashing stuff, or reuse certain clothing from my carry-on. The airlines better pay me back for going through that.
The courses were mystical, lots of rolling terrain. Courses were fair, grass wasn’t super long except at Pamure so you could advance the ball. Greens were pretty slow, otherwise the wind could blow the ball off the green. Caddies were either college students or middle aged folks who moved on from their first careers. Just regular folks working for a living.
Had a splitting headache at the Old Course, but at least I piped my drives on #1 and #17 and got a birdie on the par 3 #8 after sticking a 6 iron to six feet. Also, I hit into 5 bunkers and get out of 4/5 first try. The 5th was because of me having to put my foot up against the front bunker wall. Good thing I’m a good bunker player and can lift it out high and quickly. Playing partner took 5 to get out of one of them.
Best round shot was at Carnoustie because the rough was pretty short and they had some preconceived ideas about a 12 and 15 handicap’s driving ability (us). We were bombing most drives over the fairway bunkers from the 6100 yard tees. I could even speculate desert golf is tougher than Scottish golf due to all the desert almost always costing a shot to get out or taking a point of entry penalty. Like the equivalent of hitting into gorse, but there wasn’t always a whole lot of that so balls could usually be advanced towards the hole.
Kingsbarns was awesome with all the seaside views. What a fun, great course to end the trip on.
