I believe this, but I also don't. And I should say, I was using the wrong verbiage, yes it's need based but for 90% of the student body it's because they want the student so I mis-stated calling it academic. But I do agree there are a lot of D3 athletes who could have easily played D1 in their respective sports had they wanted to.

This is a different discussion, and one that is golf specific. Golf is not a sport that really moves any needles and is largely an affluent game. At our little school there are sports which are coveted and then there is golf and swimming. Those two sports DO NOT have the direct pipeline to admissions because they don't bring attention to the school. This is what makes Stanford so incredible. I realize they are D1, but how do they keep winning those non-revenue sports when most schools are football/basketball and forget the rest of the sports.

This is a lot of chicken or the egg so if I sound circular I don't mean to. But the academic was quoted facetiously. In my opinion, the easiest way for a school to differentiate and garner attention is through athletic success. We can't possibly think Williams College has the magic sauce so every attendee just happens to be an an elite athlete in most of their sports and has been for the past 40 years (maybe longer). But we also know, one of the criteria for being D3 is the lack of athletic scholarships, so how does it happen? A lot of those east coast D3 athletic juggernauts have a couple of things going for them. Massive endowments and emphasis on athletic achievement for visibility in a crowded field. These schools also have a direct line between ADs and Admissions so when a kid applies who can move the needle (or they believe they can) they receive "academic" scholarships, not student loans to alleviate the costs incurred by their otherwise eye watering tuitions. The truth is, based on most every single study, the leading indicator of academic success/prowess is familial SES, so how many of these kids would qualify for Pell Grants and how many of these kids are that much smarter than the other students? These academically competitive D3 schools will give scholarships because a coach wants them on their team and its a way to entice them to enroll.

Unless I were on the fast track to professional golf I would definitely look at D3 schools. In my opinion, school is the vehicle for the rest of the kids life, and not just sports, but academics, friends, connections, and learning how to be an adult. But if you ask any high school junior or senior they are already mature enough and the sole focus is sport and ranking, but I think many of them are missing the boat. The rules of engagement are significantly different for D1 to D3 in regards to the amount of time the student can have coach and team based activities. D1 hours are much more, and if they are paying the tuition they are going to make sure the player is playing golf, working out in the gym, doing one on one practices, meetings, etc. D3 the coach has a comparatively miniscule amount of time they are permitted to guide the student in the sport. At a D3, the kid gets to be a college student and learn the basic skills of life, plus gets to play competitive golf with the team. It is never surprise (to me anyway) when a rookie professional athlete goes off the rails. Through their college career they lived and breathed their sport and to make sure they qualified academically they had study halls. It isn't these kids are bad kids, they just have never not had someone telling them where to be and when. College sports are great, I played for four years. I made a lot of great friends, I got a lot of perks academically and socially because I was on the team, but at the end of the day I never thought I was going to be a professional and I wanted to be a student first, athlete second (except when it got me a better schedule or food). I would encourage any kid to go to the best academic school they can and then play sports there, but don't sleep on D3. And JDA is correct, if you are good enough D3 schools have "academic" scholarships for kids who play sports.

All this music talk and prodigies reminded me of this young lady we caught this past winter. You can skip to about the 3 minute mark, but then this 17 year old girl does this. It was pretty surprising since we were just chilling off the side doing what people do at Dead shows. @aenematedloves this stuff, @mshillshas given it up, but I will say Bobby is old, but the folks with whom he surrounds himself are all incredibly accomplished musicians. Jay Lane on the drums, Oteil Burbridge on bass, Sturgill, and Jeff Chimenti on keyboards. Grace was there to participate in the Brandi Carlile Girls Just Wanna weekend later on. Brandi also came out for a 3 song cameo.

Not to pile on, but one can simultaneously be a great guy and a personal disaster, which is what this is starting to look like. He possesses an incredible story, the rise/fall/rise again that we generally only see in movies. He seems a little old to making these types of mistakes, and it is pretty clear there are multiple mistakes. If you are driving a Lexus you probably aren't destitute. If you are carting around guns, you need to have the proper paperwork. If you are carting around weed in a state where it isn't legal then you have to have your green card. Here is my issue with all of this. There is no way he would have had time to get all of that done in PA, but if he had the OH paperwork I suspect all would have been forgiven because of the newness of the address change. I/we can feel badly, but these are problems manufactured by him. -
I absolutely knew you would find this. Big concert week for the missus. She got back from Vegas to see Beyonce, then this, and then this Friday off to see DMB in a rodeo ring. I am excited to see Dave Mathews. When we saw Foo Fighters there a couple of years ago it was incredible. The place holds 7,000 people so it's easy to see the performers, the sound is good, and the surrounds are impressive. My wife even expressed enthusiasm to see a jam band, my how much she has changed since that first Dead & Co show on the beach of Cancun those many moons ago.

A little out of character in two respects when we went to see Deathcab for Cutie last night. First off, its a school night and we don't love the work night concerts. Second, because it was a school night we left a little early to get home. They were significantly more rocking than the last time we saw them. It started out with poor sound quality which was a bummer, but then it came back and I thought they were good. In fact, the only comparison I could come up with was years and years ago I saw the Replacements in a basement and the sound was "muddy" which is fantastic for some music but not always great. DFC's lead vocalist has a very distinct voice and sometimes it felt like the mud sound didn't always fit, but energetic, fun, and really good.

I wouldn't impugn anyone for having it, but where other high end companies are sticking to it completely with artisans making their stuff, LMVH is starting to wander outside the sector for market share. That's my thing with it. Reminds me of MB back when they came out with the C-Class for those who wanted the panache without the price. I didn't like how I worded the above. I am not a discerning shopper, if I like something I buy it, doesn't matter what it is. The butt hurt for me and LVMH is I assume, because of the name, the article would be made by a European artisan, but with their move toward market share (and profit) I could be paying for the name but it is being made by the same person who makes the Walmart handbag.

My memory is failing so I looked it up. In 1978 he was dating a girl who was 17, but they couldn't get married so he had the parents sign something. Rumor has it he established custody (guardianship) so he could continue the relationship. He was 30. That is a hard stop for me. Nope, no way, no how. If a 30 year old approached my daughter when she was a high school senior I'd have run him out of town.

Unpopular opinion in the Lounge, but I really enjoyed Whoopi as a comedienne in the 90's. Once I got out of college I really lost touch with her and have never seen the View since it's on when I work, but she was both funny and intelligent then. But people change, heck Ted Nugent went off the rails. Actually, was he ever on the rails? I am not sure, but back then they protected the news makers.

And the poor guy thinks he looks like Ernie Els.
