  1. That stings a lot. I would have never thought to look at 2ndSwing. Congrats again on the find and the deal.
  2. Yes gotta play them! I’d use iron covers to minimize bag chatter. Please don’t tell me you picked these up at either 2ndSwing Minnesota locations. That would really sting finding out they were that close to my grasp. I couldn’t swing that kinda purchase right now anyways.
  3. Unbelievably gorgeous! Personal favorite I’m worried will never be obtainable. I’m envious and congratulate you sir. It’s so hard to get over how modern these look. Someone must of had them restored. Interesting seeing the long hozel. Believe they shorted that the next year.
  4. Can’t remember exactly but there was talk of a specific Apex with an especially small button spot and I thought it was the PC’s. Recalling it is harder to pure than most and completely explodes when done correctly. Can have a 30 yard range with them. I like the look combining the 73’s with the 80’s.
  5. Very nice, aren’t these from the 90’s component era? I kinda remember them at Golf Smith stores amongst the Snake Eyes component heads. Maybe I’m mistaken. There was some very handsome green and white pleather Mac VIP tour bags also.
  6. Water’s warm, come on in. Great advice given here. There’s so many great choices, open your mind to options you may not think of. Unsure of your age but for instance believe it or not Spalding used to be a massive player. There’s 50’s to mid 80’s Top Flite blades that are as good as anything out there. Pretty much any Mizuno forged club was great although they are never as cheap as the rest. Very few Wilson Staff iterations through the years were considered bad. Some prettier than others but…Extremely safe choice and can usually be had for $50-100. Can’t go wrong with just about any Hogan Apex model over the years. 73-88 models are real standouts to me. Can be gotten for $50-100. Apex shafts were THE shaft until TT DG’s came along. It’s pretty rare to find an old Apex that someone has swapped out that shaft. Watch out for a few things though. They aren’t worth much to 99 percent of golfers so other than a few specific models you/we are essentially saving them from the scrap pile. There’s no money to made in flipping. Also don’t feed em after midnight and don’t get em wet cuz as previously mentioned bye others they can multiply fast! Personally my stash grew to high teens in iron sets pretty fast. My favorites so far, with the right to find more. #1- 91 Bridgestone J’s Professional weapons #2-76 Wilson Staffs #3-54 Spalding Synchro-Dyned’s #4-59 MacGregor FC4000PT1’s #5-88 Wilson Staff Gooseneck’s Non of the rest of my sets are massive step down to play. These are just my favorites, so far…
  7. I like this thinking. Foozle and BC’s thoughts also. Currently GOING THROUGH IT. I’ve completely lost track of the swing plane. Self imposed break from the course and I’ve been beating balls at the range. Sticking to Mac JNP’s and Staff II laminates. The JNP CB’s are a little vague compared to MB’s but still give feed back. Huge difference between a so so strike and a good one un like my modern SGI’s. I don’t hate modern clubs. Find myself playing them less and less though. They sure haven’t helped me play better golf. Right now I don’t want to go anywhere near them.
  8. GW gotten. Has some real nice shape/size to it. Not super tall but kinda deep front to back and good size overall. Hickory shaft seems well intact and stout. Haven’t messed around with hickory yet. I gotta be getting close to a partial set. Think whenever I get around to it I’ll really enjoy it. The searching, tinkering and DIY club smithing sounds like a good time.
  9. Think most of us would go broke if we put that much thought into it. I pretty much just regrip em. Try getting close on shaft flex. 1950-70 clubs seem to play stiffer bye at least half a flex. Watch for possible alterations, who knows how many bending modifications have been done over the years plus abuse. Most of the minty sets we find you don’t have to worry that much cuz they where lightly played. They reshafted ones or more well used ones I try and be a bit more open minded at first. I’ve had some wedges weakened a couple degrees but I’ve never went stronger on irons. Been advised against that. I don’t concern myself about length that much. The modern mindset is I need a specific length club. Along with loft creep over the years, length has increased a little and lies have flattened over the years. I just crowd the ball a little more.
  10. I only have one Otey, a 7H. With a little elbow grease it could be made really nice but I don’t want to lose any more of the signature. Has the black leather grip, red piping and Otey Crisman Handcrafted on the grip also. It’s a round grip. Looking at other Otey’s online round grip’s seem the norm. I’ve been wanting to contact them just to see if they sell a paddle style grip with their logo. Be cool having one of their logo’d covers as long as they are reasonably priced. I’m a sucker for those also. BC 24 Otey’s sounds like a wonderful collection on its own! I’m very envious. There’s so many different styles.
  11. As you can see you hit a sore spot here. I can’t/don’t speak for others but I kinda suspect opinions stem from a couple things. He copied and refined the most successful design (like many others have). Worse yet he really helped to usher in the eyebrow raising golf club price era. Unfortunately prices aren’t even eyebrow raising anymore, it’s become the norm. I am a closeted Scotty fan. I appreciate his craftsmanship and materials he uses. Only have one, an early 2000’s Pro Platinum Newport mid slant. I adjusted to it instantly and bagged it for quite awhile. I still prefer it over just about any of his modern ones. Moderns might be better, more consistent across the face but I love the feeling of mine when you hit the sweet spot. Similar to buttoning an old iron. Nice little extra pop to it. Could be the face milling on the moderns deadening things a bit idk. Rarely play mine anymore cuz I’ve fallen in love with Napa’s. Occasionally I try searching out Napa Scotty’s only to get highly discouraged. Think $600 is the cheapest I’ve ever seen one for. Usually $1400-2500 and no way in hell would I ever pay that even if I had deep pockets. More power to the Scotty guys though cuz they seem to be quite collectible.
  12. For sake of discussion I tried my similar vintage to the Revolution’s Maxfli A10 Tour Limited models and a refrigerator magnet was attracted to them but wouldn’t hold onto. Don’t have it near me now but guessing I wouldn’t trust my range finder stuck to them. im a little foggy on these irons but I think they are some type of nickel content in construction.
  13. So i just paged through the green bible. So much in there you easily get sidetracked but I think the TA 3852 goes back to 1938 & runs to 42. 7 year war break, much longer than I thought. TA 985 appears 1949 followed by 915 then finally 945 in 1954. I’ve never had any of those TA’s in my hands but in pictures they appear pretty modern other than the face grooves. I do have a set of mid 50’s M85 Wingbacks and it’s interesting how small and LCG those actually are. Long irons especially small looking. Also quite a different more rounded sole design than the next Mac generation.
  14. Yes made to be played but…I have to admit right up front my bias towards this club over any other. I believe to be the best looking iron ever made. Damn time machine modern looking and first appearing 1956 give or take. These and the Mac TA 965’s (I think) draw a straight line directly to today’s players clubs in design. I think this club could/should be sold today with grinding and maybe the hidden tungsten weight tricks modern players irons receive. Not sure the modern golfer knows who Hogan is/was unfortunately. Probably think he played hickory’s. I don’t know what kinda money these numbered sets actually change hands for but the prices I see people asking are miles out of my reach. Heck even an avid collector would swallow pretty hard when paying those asking prices. Awesome if you’re lucky enough to have one of these very few ultra collectible clubs, sickeningly unattainable if you don’t. Kinda a crime but hell of a display piece! Those Ultra’s are an awfully nice fall back option!
  15. Raw with fresh paint fill would be cool I think. Would have to be treated with something to prevent rusting pretty often. Could be hard to maintain if you have many sets. Fortunately/unfortunately I have enough sets to forget about some for a few months at a time. I’m contemplating making a few sets raw myself (76 & 78 Staffs) cuz they have pretty bad but typical for the years chrome plate issues already. Believe on FB DIY golf club restoration someone posted some Cobra Norman grinds that were raw and I thought looked incredible. Think there was some newer Titleist CB’s that someone was working on also. I could be wrong on this but I think you use a chemical dip for chrome plate removal then a reverse electroplate procedure to remove the nickel plate. Believe getting the nickel off completely is the hardest process. I’m intimidated bye the process but it doesn’t look super tough. Handling, storing, disposing of the chemicals has me freaked out. I actually stopped into a chrome shop to get a quote on just stripping a set of heads but was quoted quite a high price. Figured it would be nothing for them to strip it off. Could have been a go away, I don’t need your business price. He didn’t seem to really understand why I wanted them raw. Suppose he’s used to making things shiny and new and was trying to sell me on that. Arnold Palmer original “the Standard” irons are eternally on my search after list. My friends son his a 1 iron of those and it’s probably one of the prettiest clubs (to look at) I’ve ever seen.
  16. Thanks, I’ve posted it a few times. As you can see it had some serious face issues before repairs. Really shows what can be done. The EOM insert looks better than the original in my opinion. No stamping left on the wood sole of the club if there ever was any. Lot of sole plate sanded down also. This does seem to have more bulge and roll than any other 2 wood I have. Unsure if that was cuz Hogan preferred that or if it is a product of the extensive face repair? Don’t know for sure but I’d bet good money that Stan at the former Golf Club Hospital in MPLS is responsible for the work. He retired about a year ago so we lost a great one. Sure he did his fair share saving clubs we all appreciate.
  17. (Halfsie Heaven) Since others have recently been I put together this half set for a round. 76 BH Apex irons 3-9 odds + Equilizer BH fifty three wedge MacGregor BH 2 wood 76 BH Apex speedslot 5 wood PING PAL putter Early morning first off playing bye myself. Mowing schedule and league play had to play the front 9 twice. Played 27 holes cuz scored 2 ball’s on 2nd loop. Odd on that 2nd ball lots of shots turned disastrous. 3 shots worse with that ball. Usually 2nd ones are better but not yesterday. Shot 25 over par total for 27 holes so pretty anonymous golf at best. I get a fair amount of pars but my doubles out of nowhere problem might be the thing I can count on the most consistently unfortunately. I did have some excellent 115-135 yard approach shots with the E & 9. Usually after being out of position previously. Club of the round was the 3 iron. Greened a 179 yard uphill landing par 3 twice and greened two 180+ yards approach shots out of light rough. Just was hoping for green side vicinity on those. I really believe these Apex’s to play much friendlier than they look. They are definitely on the smaller size even for old blades. If one was a Hogan only guy I could completely understand. Missed two legit birdie opportunities inside of 7 feet but had some very good long distance putts. Think only one 3 putt. Not very a good day with the woods. I’ve actually been swinging persimmons with confidence lately but not today. Lot of bulge and roll on this 2 wood. When the swing is working it curves where you want it to go. When it’s not it curves into the oh no places. This 2wood has had a lot of work done on it. Im really great full somebody saved it from the scrap heap and put some money into the repair and TT DG S300 shaft. With the Wilson Duo ball I was playing it’s an extremely soft feeling persimmon. Hit the Apex 5 wood good off the ground but usually low running shots. Now that I think about it I may have been swinging every club with a trapping style iron swing today hmmm.
  18. I’m all for the modern, especially Miz stuff, but there’s something special about the old “snake killers”. Loft really doesn’t translate and there’s no question the modern low loft goes farther. It’s also got a lot more built into it, even the “stick” clubs. Masochistic or not you got very little helping you other than that every once in awhile pure swing with the old stuff and that’s off a damn tee peg. Fun to screw around with one every once in awhile. I have 3 of them. A normal Mac and Wilson and the 3rd is someone’s monstrosity experiment. 43 inch long, 6.5 Rifle shaft, super flat lie, Golf Smith forged cavity back component head. That thing is a riot to swing!
  19. No promises, I’m in MPLS but I’d consider a roadtrip to spend time with like minded. The stars would have to aligned perfectly and everything else along with that, schedule, life, etc. but it does sound fun.
