Holy smokes, man. Those are beautiful. I'd like to hear the story of how they "fell into your lap". -
That's what I have found as well. However there were apparently at least 2 different iron designs I have found that are called "Ultradyne II" and I was curious if the woods changed as well.

Vintage club repair literature
DonaldDunes replied to DonaldDunes's topic in Hickory, Persimmon and Classic Clubs
I wish I knew, those are the only photos I have of them that my father took. I will be making a post about them when I get them in hand. I remember my dad taking them out (in the original leather bag) to play a couple of rounds with me in high school (2001) when I first got into golf. He could hit those woods about 200 yards straight right it seemed haha. Now he reports that the grips are mostly missing due to age, and I think the bottom of the bag got wet in a flash flood or two. I'm hoping to bring them back round though! -

Vintage club repair literature

Thank you very much! I was actually brought to this forum following a rabbit trail via @Jiggered youtube page. I agree with the quality of "The Vintage Golfer" YT channel. While I do not possess half of the knowledge needed to make a judgement call of it's accuracy, the depth of research seems to be....shallow compared to the much preferable "Classic Golf Clubs". I also haunt the used book sections, which is one of the reasons I am asking haha. I need to know what to keep an eye out for! Although ebay seems to have a great selection if you know what to search. I am a huge fan of the "post-war" era of golf (steel shafts through the 70's as I understand it). My great-grandfather played in a few Pro-Am tournaments in the 70's and I am interested to see what was going on in the world of golf back then. Also, I can't really stand the modern equipment haha. Attached are some pictures of my great-grandfather's clubs he played. I am supposed to get them from my father soon and intend to restore and play them! -
Picked up everything you see here for $50 out of a storage building for an antique store. The lady tried to give them to me, but I couldn't do that. Inside was a hickory mashie!

Vintage club repair literature
DonaldDunes replied to DonaldDunes's topic in Hickory, Persimmon and Classic Clubs
Rather than start a new topic, I'll ask here. What literature would you recommend for identifying, collecting, and just general history for vintage clubs? (Early 1980's and prior) -

Do you have a picture of what these look like behind the ball at address? Haha. -
Does anyone know if these are a matched set? I bought them together and love playing the irons, but I can't seem to find any matching woods. If not, does anyone know what the woods matching these irons looked like?

Vintage club repair literature

I will definitely be looking for this. Thank you! It just so happens I enjoy vintage books as well, so this is perfect. I love the cover art. Thank you! Well, there goes all my free time haha. Thank you much! -
I'm planning to start restoring vintage clubs as a hobby soon and I was wondering if anyone would recommend some classic literature on how to reshaft these vintage pinned, screwed, and whipped clubs?
-
I intend to keep this thread alive as I roll through my journey and discover new clubs I cannot identify as to keep the forum uncluttered. As such, here is the first candidate. I picked up a large lot of clubs for very cheap and this was one of the strays in one of the bags. It appears to be a steel shaft with a brown plastic cover on it. I believe it would be an early steel shafted iron.

I have a set of Browning 440s that are lady's shafted and I love them. I have been considering putting extensions on them. What do yours look like? Price? I'm located in the US. -
Best classic irons

Yeah, I was into golf last in 2001 and then did not keep up with the sport at all until this year. As such, I promptly sold my 2001 Rawlings (they were terrible) cavity backs and bought a set of 2016 Ping G-series irons. Well, come to find out they changed the lift on all the irons. Also I hate the bounce on them. And they invented this new solid core ball as well I see. Long story short, I found a cheap set of Hagen Ultradryne II irons and loved playing them. They dont go as far and they are less forgiving. But they have what I would consider useful lofts and basically no bounce...which is what I was used to. From there the rabbit hole grew quickly. The other clubs you see in these photos I bought in a set for $50. Because i wouldn't let the lady that had them in her antique store storage building give them to me. Haha. -
I am new to vintage club collecting and have caught the bug. I thought it would be fun to hear what your favorite itons were. Specifically, your top 5 (or 10, I don't care how long the list is really) favorite iron models that have stood the test of time or were the top performers for their day. Also whatever are your favorite for any reason from looks to sentimental value. Looking forward to lots of clubs to research and learn about!

Browning 440 plus - thoughts?
DonaldDunes replied to clee33's topic in Hickory, Persimmon and Classic Clubs
Funny story, I last played golf in 2002 until this year, and my clubs were new Rawlings in 2001...so not great haha. As such, I never could hit my irons well, usually topping them, or slicing badly. This year I got myself a set of 2016 Ping G series irons and had much the same outcome. I had never owned a hybrid as they were still a pretty new thing to my golf experience. So, I went out and bought a 31 degree Ping G20 hybrid. I then proceeded to hit it straight as an arrow for no conceivable reason. After being blown away by this experience, I went to my bag and compared it to my irons, and found that exact same shaft length and loft on my 6 iron. I then pretended I was holding the hybrid in my hands and swung the 6 iron. Perfect. Since then I have "found my swing" and have been playing way better than I ever have. Now my nemeses is the short irons from these new sets, as the lofts and bounce are....horrible. Which is what has lead me to vintage club collecting and usage. (which has rapidly gotten out of hand as you can see by my photos haha) I much prefer the lofts of these old irons, but man are the "older" style hybrids amazing on the fairway....or even off the tee. I would highly recommend trying some. -
Browning 440 plus - thoughts?
DonaldDunes replied to clee33's topic in Hickory, Persimmon and Classic Clubs
Thank you so much for the replies! I very well may re-shaft them. I may make a new post chronicling the journey haha. So far as my thoughts about the club design, I agree. In fact, I think you understated the case. I have hit out of EXTREME rough at my home-made golf course in my yard (Think 2.5 foot high Bermuda hay field) and they cut through the rough stuff better than traditional irons. You have to aim to hit the ball well height wise, but that, to me, is a skill issue rather than a club design issue. And not a very difficult one to overcome. I am a high handicapper, and I haven't marked a real issue hitting these in rough. To that end, I find it downright hilarious that hybrids are recommended by many now to hit out of the rough being the lower profile face cuts through the rough better. I think that modern hybrids are just the grandchildren of these low profile irons. To illustrate this point I have attached 2 photos of a side by side comparison between a 3 iron and my Ping G20 hybrid. -
Browning 440 plus - thoughts?
DonaldDunes replied to clee33's topic in Hickory, Persimmon and Classic Clubs
@Jiggered I recently acquired a full set of irons (and 2 woods) of Browning 440s and I absolutely love the way they play. The only problem is, the set I found are ladies and I am 6'4". Naturally, this has lead to an aching back and more than a few topped balls. I watched your fabulous video about the irons and doing google research I found this post! I have a couple of questions if you had the time. Firstly, do you know if the ladies heads are weighted differently than the men's? I acquired a men's sand wedge to complete the set, but as you know the head design is vastly different. The ladies set sports blue paint whereas the men's are painted black. I do not know if that is the only difference. Secondly, do you knoq how long you can possibly go with shaft extensions? I would love to extend them 3", but I'm quite sure that's a reach. Thank you in advance and I thoroughly enjoy your youtube channel. I am making my way through your entire catalog. Of course anyone else that may have the answers is more than welcome to chime in!
