One round in Atlanta at a ClubCorp course

Going to be heading up to Atlanta and have only time for one round.

 

Which of the follow courses would you play? If you have an opinion let me know why and if you've played the other courses. I know there are probably other courses out there but I'm playing one of these (so please don't tell me I should go play somewhere else).

 

Country Club of the South

Eagles Landing

Laurel Springs

Northwood Country Club

Country Club of Gwinnett

Of that list, I would play Bear's Best, Country Club of the South, or Eagles Landing. Laurel Springs I hated. Country Club of Gwinnett is alright. I have never played Northwood Country Club. Part of which one you play should be based on where in Atlanta you are staying. Bear's Best and Country Club of the South are on the north side. Eagles Landing is on the south side.

CC South is probably the best, with Bears Best and Eagles Landing right behind. You couldn't go wrong with either of the 3. Laurel Springs is a fine club but I've never like the course. I actually think Northwood is a better course but seems to always play wet and is not as well taken care of. Avoid CC Gwinnett like the plague.

Bears Best is a great layout, but it gets a ton of play so the greens get chewed up. I stopped playing due to regularly having 5.5 hour rounds and a staff that jammed tee times close together but did not care to encourage the slow players to play faster.

i'm an eagles landing member, and i would go bears best or CC of the south. Eagles Landing is in good shape, but nothing too special.

I'm a member at Northwood. I would agree with most of the above comments. It sounds like you are coming soon? If so then Bear's Best is a good choice because they overseed their fairways in the winter. They keep the greens at average speed. Their range and short game practice area are extremely nice. Fairways are pretty open, then big greens with a lot of sand around them. Pretty easy to keep the ball in play.

I have not played Laurel Springs since they put in the new greens. It is ok but not special.

Northwood is a great walking course and a fun diverse layout that puts a premium on driving the ball in the right parts of the fairway, but it is not a "manicured" course in terms of the groundskeeping. And it does stay wet especially in the winter because a couple of big creeks run through it. Although right now as of this time period in late January, things are pretty well dried out. We also are doing some renovations to some of the bunkers which will continue through March when all will be complete. The greens are in great shape right now - bent grass. I belong there because I live and work close by but it is not something you really travel for.

CC of Gwinnett is kind of an odd course. Fairly open front nine and wooded almost claustrophobic back nine. They have new greens put in last summer. Nothing special. The kind of place you belong to if you live close by.

I have not played CC of the South but have heard good things about it. I know their clubhouse is very elaborate. It is located in a very pricey upscale part of town.

I did play Eagles Landing about two months ago and loved it. The greens are VERY fast - faster than any of the other courses mentioned. They also have 27 holes which is nice. Eagiles Landing used to host an LPGA event so that tells you something about the overall quality and layout of the course. As someone above said, Eagles Landing is south of Atlanta, the rest of the courses are all north.
