Are ping standard iron lengths .25" shorter?

Wouldn't that make them play longer?

I don't understand why loft and lie is measured with the grip on? Why does that part matter?

It doesn't. It's just where that step in the process occurs so by the time they are ready to do lie and loft, the grips are already on.

Is Ping the company that measures at the angle going to the impact center (down to the ground) or is that only for putters?
You measure putters down the shaft line and more often than not, it goes through the center (or near it).

And here is a statistic that no major OEM wants you to know: Standard length/standard lie (you pick the brand) fits only one golfer in 8. Poor odds indeed and that only applies to length and lie. Add shaft weight, shaft flex and grip size - the odds get even worse.
Would you mind quoting a credible source for those statistics and your statement ?

Ten years of custom fitting. Close to 2100 iron fittings with three different companies - one you have never heard of but very popular in the Pacific Northwest, Mizuno (5 seasons) and Cobra (2 seasons) as a Tech Rep.

The ratio is consistent - about 1 in 8 fittings are standard length/standard lie.

Perhaps a WRXer who also works in one of the major OEM's custom departments will chime in?

The ratio is actually quite similar to shoe statistics. Size 9 might be the most popular size but if you add all the sizes that are sold (from size 6 to 8 1/2 and 9 1/2 to 13, the other sizes outnumber size 9 by about 7 or 8 to one. It's a bell curve.

Apples & oranges. Shoe size is definable, club fitting is mostly guessing.

Standard loft/lie/length golf clubs, outsell "custom sized" by a factor of probably 10:1. There's no big secret why most every OEM has similar "standard specifications" ... they work for the vast majority of the golfing population.

The vast majority of the golfing population can't distinguish +/- 1/2" in length, +/- 1*-1.5* of lie, nor +/- 2 swingweights.

I could not disagree more.

There is an optimal length and lie for every single golfer. As a club fitter, it is my job to identify those two dimensions (plus shaft weight, shaft flex and grip size) so that the golfer can make the most efficient swing he is capable of making. Correct length and lie allows a golfer to establish and maintain spine and knee flex angles and thereby make the most efficient swing he can make.

Off the rack sets of irons can and never will achieve that and just because a new or novice golfer can (in your view) not tell the difference, is no reason to short-change that golfer. He too should have the best information that I can provide. His money is just as good as the single-digit handicapper.

Bodies come in all shapes and sizes but off the rack sets fail badly in recognizing that fact. I will bet that the last time you loaned your car to someone, the next time you jumped back into the driver's seat you had to adjust the seat, the mirrors and possibly the steering wheel.

So, what are your specs? Do you use standard length and standard lie? Perhaps you do but if not, how can you not expect every golfer to get the same attention re equipment as you got when you bought your last set of irons?

Some day, someone is going to do an actual scientific study on the improvement of scores, as a result of "fitting. Until then, significant score improvement as a result of club fitting (in the majority of cases), is nothing more than wishful thinking on the part of people making money from it, in my opinion.

Curiously, there are at least (2) threads currently running, from guys who are particularly disappointed in the results of club fitting ... zero threads running claiming that club fitting improved one's scores.

We can agree to disagree, but thank you for being polite about it.

I disagree as well. I think a bad fitting is mostly a result of a bad fitting model or fitting professional. A lot of fitting horror stories I hear are from fittings at super big box stores, and a lot of the best I hear are from the more boutique locations.

Personally, I can say that I have had a fitting in the last three years that was 100% spot on.

I think that would be a generalization for plumber's necks only? I have a lot of heel shafted and a few double/single bend mallets that are not like that.

Ping standard for a steel shaft 5 iron is 37.75 inches. Titleist standard on steel shaft iron is 38.00 inches. Some Adams and Wilson irons are 38.25 inches in steel shafts. Graphite shafts in irons are usually .5 inch longer. Lie angles are different as well. The key is to find what fits you and go from there.

Not sure about others but the Ping standard is 37.75" whether it is steel or graphite.

Which underlines why Ping is a premier golf manufacturer. The companies that make their standard length graphite shafted irons a half inch longer are simply lazy. Using graphite in place of steel reduces the swing weight so they add the extra length to compensate.

Ping is not lazy and realize that controlling swing weight should be done with weight, not length.

That's why they are only one of two true golf club manufacturers (among the largest OEMs).

Well, I just received a set of "standard length" shaft pulls from Ping S56. After dry fitting each club with my irons they all measure .25" short of the 38" 5-iron. I also have a demo ping S56 iron than measures 36.75".

So bottom line PING player irons play .25" shorter.

So just as a follow up to this question... Didn't Ping adjust their specs not to long ago? If so, does that mean their standard length is still 0.25" shorter than Titleist's standard length?

For the i200 and iblade Ping lengthened their standard length by 1/4" so the 5-iron now measure 38.0" without a grip, or about 38.25" with a grip.

I'm not sure how Titleist measures, with a grip or without, so this information must be determined before a proper comparison can be made.
