Cameron Newport AOP oil can 350G ?

Hi all....was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the 350g oil can Art of putting Newport? I have one 33in shaft etc and have read that it was a run of 500 made and intended for the Japanese market. Is this true? Ive had this putter in the bag for right at 15 years and actually picked it up on my home course..Turned it in to lost and found and no one claimed it. I used it for years and never realized it was a 350G head...Love the feel of it but had no idea it was rare. Seems like the specs match up with circle T putters of today so it makes me wonder if it was meant for tour use or could anyone have ordered it in the late 90s when it was built ?(im not sure of build year) any info would be great..Ill try to upload some pics in the am

I believe the 33/350 putter you are referring to have that stamped on the toe of the putter. Pics would help to determine what you have

yep that's the one..stamped 350g 33 4* loft forget the lie angle...its in my bag in the back seat of my truck at the moment..ill post some pics in the am for sure

lol yea thought about that after I posted...don't worry trucks parked beside dog lot ..and all is well within rifle range of my bedroom window.. im lucky enough to live 300 yards off the road by myself...so its safe unless a sasquatch comes by..But honestly the thought did cross my mind...that's why I don't want to go out and get it tonight..Its pitch black outside at night here..Ive got a skunk that visits and coyotes always howling..don't want to come across either of those guys..lol

From what I have read the 33/350 AOP Newports are pretty rare. 99% sure you are correct in that they were originally designed for the Japanese market since at the time the standard specs in the U.S. were 35/330. Even with some rust and having been gamed a while these heads still get good prices on ebay.

pics as promised...I know shes battle worn..But I personally don't mind the patina...I have thought about sending it in for restoration , but I know I wouldn't want to play it again if I did...adding more pics now..good grief they take forever to load

I personally think it looks a lot better gamed for so long than it would if it was fully restored. The head has character and shows that it has made many a putt in its lifetime.

im still loading more pics lol.... yea I agree..and I actually value this putter more sentimentally than in money...Its the only putter I own currently. I would have a hard time knowing what to insure it for if I shipped it to Cameron for restoration. I couldn't replace it ..Not with one that ive had in my bag for 15 years...I wish they had serialized some of their stuff so we could figure out who originally ordered etc..Id love to know if this was a call titleist and order it type thing or if it was meant for a Japanese tour player etc. Has it been to Japan? and how did it get back here? these are the things I wonder.

This putter is 1 of 300 made at 33/350, primarily for the Japanese market. Not sure they all went there or not, but just like other putters made for the Japanese market, many ended up in the hands of collectors here in the US eventually. Really cool sticks that are somewhat hard to find for a while, then you'll see 2 or 3 in a month or so. Great putter for those who want a 350 gram carbon head without paying big money for a tour stick.

They also were sold in some shops in the US. I had one that still had the original $299 price tag on it.

thanks guys...anyone know what the correct head cover looks like? I have a studio stainless cover on it just for protection..but would like to have one that's correct

They also made a gun blue version. I have owned both and foolishly sold them awhile back. Notice how the cavity isn't milled out. That adds some of the extra weight.

That's a beauty. I had a few of them in my years of collecting. Here's the only one that remains. All original black oxide with beautiful milling.

Do not restore that! You will not want to game it afterwards. You can always restore a putter but you can never make it original again.

wow that black oxide is nice....I hear ya on the restoration too.....I regret having this one in the bag so long without a headcover...But every nick she has tells a story...ive hit a lot of putts with it and the story of how I got it is almost unbelievable.... I was a 20 year old kid working at our local course while finishing school and I found it one morning early while mowing greens..I turned it in to the proshop lost and found and after a month they called me up and told me it was mine....I did not own a bag of clubs at the time ..I had a partial set of sam snead blue ridge blades that I used to hit in the yard... This putter spurred me to buy a used set of DCI blacks and that's how I got into playing on the course.... I had no idea who scotty Cameron was or for that matter nor did I care.. I of course have went through a lot of clubs since, but this putter has never left my bag... so it may just make it into my will one day...lol...

AFAIK, there were two generations of 33"/350g NPs. The first only came in black ox and the specs were stamped parallel to "The Art of Putting" Titleist stamp and these were 1/100.

 

The second version had the specs stamped near the toe and perpendicular to the rest of the stamping (like OP's). Purportedly there were 400 of these made - 300 in oil can and 100 in black oxide.

 

The major difference between these and the 330g retail heads from the same period is the thickness of the face. You'll notice there's no "dog ear" or "oval track" cavity at all on these heads. The topline is also much thicker than 330g AoP NPs which indicates they milled the face down less on the 350g heads.

I'm not sure but based on the retail releases that they coincide with, the first version should have been from '95, '96 or '97 and the second should be from '98 or '99.

wow...that means the one I have must have only been a year or so old when I found it..lol... I wish I had taken pics of it then..I honestly cant remember what the condition was..im guessing pretty good..so that means all of the bag chatter etc is on me..lol.. oh well live and learn I guess

These are some of the best OTR/limited Camerons ever made. They may as well be tour putters with the specs and are exceptional gamers. Finding them in mint condition is essentially impossible at this point as the best examples are tucked away in collections. I had the entire set at one point but unfortunately I putt better with a flow neck so I got rid of them. As stated earlier, the oil can AOP 33/350 was 1 of 300. They also did the same engravings in gun blue which was 1 of a 100. Lastly, there was a 33/350 version of the Cameron Classics line as well. If I wasn't saving cash for a new baby and house, I'd pick one of these up as a collector's piece.
