Dialing my set in...or going off the deep end?

Recommended Posts

I've been adding new clubs to my bag ever since the face cracked on my Rapture V2 20-hybrid last summer, in which Ping exchanged it +$60 for a G25. What a great club.

Next my swing coach and I were working through some adjustments (see poser thread) when it came up my AoA and launch are both too low. We worked on (and still are) improving it. It was recommended that I get a driver with more loft, so I bought a R1 Black and put a Grafalloy ProLaunch Blue in it. Great combo, but the 2.8 torque may be too low.

It wasn't long before I was shopping for a new 4-wood to replace my perfectly fine Rapture V2, a few trips to BST and now I have a G25. Easy to launch and feels great.

I've been saving up and waiting (patiently) for the Ping i25 irons and Gorge wedges (all KBS Tour soft-stepped once) to replace my G10s. Two weeks ago I went in for a fitting, and am anxiously awaiting for their arrival. Fantastic sticks.

New putter last week, Odyssey Versa 330 mallet to replace my White Hot #5...

Now I am contemplating my wood shafts. The one in my driver has torque that is too low and feels stiff at impact. How much importance do you guys put on shaft torque consistency and blending weight?

Currently: R1 12-degree 2.8-torque 65-gram, G25 4-wood 17.5-degree 3.1-torque 68-gram, G25 20-hybrid 3.1-torque 76-gram.

Am I fine tuning my set or going off the deep end?!?!?

Torque is all about feel so it will completely depend on how sensitive you are too it. Most people pay way too much attention to it and can, in reality, typically ignore it. I do believe, even if you are sensitive to it, it should be probably the last fitting factor to look at when choosing a shaft. Find the right length and weight first then flex and bend profile second. And then if you can actually find and feel a difference in torque between shafts that match the first two criteria then nothing wrong with making a final choice based on that feel difference.

I should also add, you need to keep in mind that there is no standard for measuring torque (or even common practice that I'm aware of) so it's completely pointless to compare the torque numbers coming from different shaft manufacturers. What you actually feel at contact with the ball is the only valid way to compare the torque between two shafts.

I can speak from my own personal experience. I'm not sure what your level of ability is, or how repeatable your swing is. I'm around a 15 cap right now, but was around a 10 last summer. My swing was repeatable for a while, but now is on and off. I went through the whole shaft search thing picking out and getting fit for all of the right things. Spending loads of money. Only to find out that what I was originally playing was fine for my swing. Not that much difference in all of the different equipment for my swing type.

I went from regular stock shafts in driver and fairways when my SS was 103, to x stiff exotic shafts when my SS jumped up to 116. Then my SS dropped agin, but below 100 which made all of my shafts through out the whole set no longer work for me. Now it's getting back up there, 3 wood around 103, and 7 iron around 88. I found out that the stock offerings from ping are fine for me and I was making to much out of all this stuff.

I think the shaft search is more for the guys that have a good solid repeatable swing where they can dial that stuff in. My swing can change from day to day so much that what I get fit for on day may not be good for the next.

The new clubs I just bought have standard shaft offering in them and will work fine. G25 driver with TCF Tour stiff, G25 3 wood with TFC tour stiff, I25 irons 3 thru LW CFS stiff. Trying to keep it simple and these will be fine. Beats the KBS tour x stiff soft stepped once that I had before in my irons. They were great when my swing was good, but after a bit I felt like I had to swing to hard with them.

So in summary it depends on what your needs are. Can you dial in your perfect ball flight, carry, and total distance. Or are you more like 95% of recreational golfers (including me) who just need a regular ole loft, lie, and basical shaft fitting?

You are always on point Stuart G!
I did work with a club builder as you suggested first starting with length, flex and bend profile. Club length is 45", and on my off days I choke down an inch for more control. And I see now why some prefer to have shafts from the same manufacturer for all their woods. I know there isn't an industry standard for shaft flex, but would it be nice to have one (torque as well).

My swing is repeatable on most days, however shaky this winter! 5.2 that will probably slip to a 7-8 before spring comes around.

Moving from the stock RIP Phenom 58-gram to ProLaunch 65-gram was a good move for me regarding flex, weight and bend profile. Considering what I need, then I am probably good to go with what I have in my bag. I'm certainly not at a high performance level where this is a high priority. What I probably should have done was addressed the driver/4-wood/hybrid at the same time.

The ProLuanch Blue has always been a favorite shaft of mine. Another one you might try is a UST V2 High Launch. They feel similar to me but the V2 tip feels a bit softer IMO.

Based on the fact I do not understand anything you said in the paragraph above: Yes you are going off the deep end.

I think dialing in is a shaft change, loft or lie adjustment, cutting a half inch off a driver. You sir just started over.
