Best Value Golf & Spa Trip

Recommended Posts

So I've booked my annual buddies golf trip to Northern Michigan for this summer, and now the old lady is hounding me about a trip for us.

We're both in our late 20's and want to go somewhere with a nice golf/spa package so I can hit the links in the morning while she does her spa thing. We're looking to go somewhere in late April/early May for 4ish nights, and would like somewhere that wont completely break the bank.

I've looked a little bit at Southern California/Florida/Scottsdale, which are probably the main areas that we'd consider. We stayed at the Fairmont Princess last May in Scottsdale, and while the Stadium course was calling my name I didn't have my sticks and wasn't ready to drop $300 to play with rentals.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Kohler if you can find the right package and stay at the Inn not the American Club. Not cheap, but can be done without breaking the bank, especially at that time of year. I thought it was an outstanding value for the quality of the golf and resort.

Kohler is the only golf destination (and I've dragged her to many...lol) that she is eager to return to. The spa is rated one of the best in the country. Second choice would be Carlsbad.

Two years ago we went to Phoenix and stayed at Sheraton Wild Horse Pass. It has two courses and a casino all on the property (which is on a Reservation - thus allowing the casino). It's on the south side of Phoenix opposite Scottsdale area (north side). We got a package deal and thought if was pretty reasonable.

Another vote for Coronado in San Diego here. The course is great and the spa is good too. I think you can get a special card for golf discounts too.

Definitely not Southern California/Florida/Scottsdale, but if your really not trying to break the bank why not go up to Lake Geneva for a weekend (seen your in Chicago). I know its close so it really won't feel like a vacation but its really a nice area if you've never been.

Wild Horse Pass has a really good higher end outlet mall and an awesome restaurant named Kai. You would also be fairly close to Southern Dunes, which is one of the better public tracks in the area. Good suggestion!

Reynolds Plantation, Ross Bridge, and French Lick all have very nice accommodations and golf. I consider them reasonably priced because I can drive and avoid plane tickets, baggage fees for clubs, parking, and a rental car. They all work for your May time frame as well. There are more exotic places on the ocean, for sure, but then you'd be breaking the bank, especially if it's a short trip. I can't justify flying unless I'm going to be there at least a week.

Hold out for the fall. The take her up North, too.

In the fall, the Inn at Bay Harbor does a $555 deal. For $555 you get two nights lodging, breakfast buffet (a really good one), and they give you a gift certificate for $555 at the spa. Kick in an extra $100 for the lake view rooms, Petosky has a lot of great restaurants. And, since you're staying at the Inn, you can get easy access to the Golf Club at Bay Harbor - great courses.

Southern California has a lot of options. I'm in San Diego and there's a few of resorts that have courses and spas, but it's not going to be cheap. Don't waste your time at the Coronado course unless you are staying at the hotel del and don't have a car. Aviara makes more sense to me.

Thanks for the input everyone, I really appreciate it. About a month ago we had all but booked a trip to the lodge at Torrey Pines, but those plans fell through. After more research, and reading some of the suggestions from this thread, I think were going to try and spend a couple of nights in San Diego, and then drive to and do the spa & golf portion of the trip in Palm Springs.

Right now I'm leaning towards staying at the La Quinta Resort and playing TPC Stadium (Maybe amoung others), but there are a few other places in the area that look to be pretty special.

I'd love to hold out, but she's itching to get out of this cold weather. Before I booked my U.P. trip with my buddies for this July, we looked into the Boyne/Bay Harbor area, but the deal we got in the U.P just couldn't be passed up.

The bungalows at La Quinta are awesome and the wife really enjoyed the spa. PGA West (?) was awesome.

Word of advice from an old fart and I think other senators on this site would agree.

You are way too young to be calling your wife 'old lady' especially since it's Valentines today.

The General is on my bucket list this year. My buddy took his fiancé to Galena last fall for a weekend of wine tasting and spa treatments and I know she loved it.

Great choice. Also look into the Homesyead in VA. You can drive to these places.

My wife and I did the same thing a couple years ago. We flew into San Diego and played Aviara. It was really nice, but we went to Torrey Pines to check it out and I wish we had played there instead. We stayed at West Inn and Suites in Carlsbad, which is a phenomenal boutique hotel that gets impeccable reviews.

We then drove to Palm Springs and stayed in a suite at Agua Caliente casino / hotel. It was one of the coolest hotel rooms we've ever seen, and we've payed upwards of $1000/night on occasion at other places. For the quality, the price was very reasonable and there is an In-and-Out Burger right across the street. The two courses at Indian Wells were fantastic. Shadow Creek was great as well. The other courses were good, but not outstanding.

I was having this same discussion with my wife. We narrowed it down to five locations:
1) Pebble Beach - Crazy expensive.
2) Pinehurst - They have a spa/golf package so they wife goes to the spa and you play golf: http://www.pinehurst...-or-spa-escape/
3) Hilton Head - The spa isn't great, but I think it is actually reasonable in price.
4) Sea Island - I think your wife would have a better time than you. A bit too pricey.
5) AZ - Dove Mtn or Scottsdale.

I actually thought the Pinehurst package wasn't bad.
