How far do you really carry a 7 iron or (3 iron) ? Merged

I dont know why, and maybe its me, but everyone I talk to carries their 7 iron 150 yards. Watching videos on youtube, everyone carries their 7 iron approx. 165 - 175 yards. I dont know what it is about the 7 iron, but it seems to be everyone's bench mark for how far they carry their irons. Ive seen my buddy literally smash a 7 iron 20 yards short from 150 yards out, because the 7 iron is always his 150 club. Im thinking about bending my 7 iron down to a 5 iron, so I cant start bragging about carrying my 7 iron 160, seems like the macho thing to do. Anyone with me?

It's probably used as a common measuring stick because it's right in the middle of most people's iron sets. The real question is who cares how far anyone else carries their 7-iron? As long as you know how far YOU are going to hit it, you're golden. If you're worried about bragging about 7-iron carry, you're missing the point of the game!

I carry my forged 7 around 163 but it doesn't matter. It's all ego after that. I could hit a 163 yard 7 iron 45 feet from the hole and another guy hit a 5 iron and put it 2 feet. Guess who wins the hole.

Scores are what matter.

My post was meant as a joke, just find it interesting how everyone seems to carry their 7 iron exactly 150 yards, no matter where they play. Trust me Im not going to lose any sleep over how far people carry their 7 iron, nor am I really going to bend my 7 iron down to a 5 iron. Hell I already carry a 7 iron 180, so it wouldnt really make sense.

Bro this is golfwrx, everyone carries their pw 150, not 7i
[/quote]

Wait, how can this be. I thought that only the golfers on Youtube carried their PW 150 yards. Unless of course the Youtubers are infiltrating Golf WRX.

Quick get the golf purists, we must put an end to this madness.

Usually 165-170.

Feet?

No, I'm talking centimeters here, I'm having a good day if I make it past the ladies tees.

You and me both. I think my golf ball would go further if I just kicked it off the tee with my foot

As John Daly would say, "How far do you want me to hit a pitching wedge?".

I can hit a 7 iron 30ft for a chip and run, a pitch from 90 yards, can hit a cut to 135 yards, a straight ball 145 yards, or a draw/hook to 155 yards. I could even hit it further with a hooded hook back in the stance and it would be a screaming 165. So there you have it, anything from 30ft to 165 yards, or more if it hits a cart path.

Just know "your" distance, no ones else matters as every one is different.

140-180 depending on the course. Uphill, downhill, what have you.

A local course has a 161 yard par 3 where the tee and green are at the same height. Blocked by wind on three sides by mature Douglas Firs, unless it comes directly from the north it's essentially a no wind hole. 84 feet above sea level. I use an 8 iron (38*). MP-59s are 1-3* stronger lofted than more traditional sets.

With MP-33s, I would hit a 7 iron (36*).

Many people who are hitting 7 irons 170-180 "easy" are using sets that are very strong lofted, ie a 32* 7 iron....which in a set of MP-33s would be a 6 iron.

My swing also has me driving into the ball with my hands forward, delofting the club. Just because I hit my irons further than "normal" doesn't equate to being a better golfer. I do struggle in plenty enough other areas, just been lucky that my iron game has always been decent.

I carry it 18 holes if I am walking. I carry it ZERO if I am riding.

Interesting comment you made about 150 yards being the stock answer. I like the "chip it 30 ft or skull it 180 yds, versatile club" answer.

165-ish with the Ansers, 175-ish with the G20.

My clubs are +1" though. I rightfully, or not, attribute an extra club length because of it.

Thing is, what difference does it make? With all the varying equipment, balls and course conditions I cannot see an exact figure being valid.

I only carry my 7 iron about 140, and I'm a fit 34yr old male. I take 3/4ths swings with all of my clubs... a habit I've developed over the years to promote control and solid contact over distance. And you know what? I don't care that I routinely take one or sometimes 2 extra clubs to get the same distances as my playing partners, especially when I'm taking money from them.

edit: I picked up a ton of distance with a swing change and an equipment change about 6 months ago. Since this thread is still going and people have "liked" the post, I figure I ought to at least update. My 7-iron is now my 160yd club in the spring-fall (less distance in the winter). But still, it doesn't matter how far you hit it as long as you know the distance that the ball will go.

Stock 7 is 170 to 175. I can hit further but no point as I have zero accuracy haha. But my distances are changing a little since switching from a draw to fade. It's crazy how much further you can hit with a draw. But I'm plenty long thank goodness.

I picked up a tip at a clinic years ago where a teaching pro was talking about some of the things he has his "serious" players do to fine-tune their game. Knowing your distances is crucial so here's a way to get a realistic handle on it.

Put a small spiral notebook in your golf bag. During a round, when you hit an iron shot that you think was just "perfect" and it's normal conditions (not having to account for wind or a funky lie or being unusually cold) then use your laser to find the exact distance the shot traveled and write it down in your notebook. You might only write down a couple of "perfect" shots per round or you might not write down any on a cold or windy day.

But over the course of a few months you'll build up a list of "perfect" distances for various clubs. Especially the shorter irons.

I don't do that routinely but I've done it in the past. So for instance I know that "138" and "139" show up quite often on my "perfect" 7-iron shots and "121" or "122" are the usual numbers for my 9-iron. My last version of notes didn't have many 8-irons but I got a couple of "130" in there.

Anyway, I'm convinced that on a normal summer or fall day from a normal lie my 7-iron goes right about 138 yards. Mentally I just round that off to 120, 130, 140 for the 9, 8 and 7 irons. But if you ask me exactly how far I hit a 7-iron I'd say 138 is the number.

Most of the time distance threads are centered around truly "outlier" type claims, which may be true, but are also rare

a 150 yard 7 iron with modern irons is not rare at all. In fact i'd say if you can't do it you are on the shorter side at least if you're talking about good golfers. I'm not saying you can't be a good golfer and be short, i'm just saying that's on the shorter side. Pretty much everyone i play with who is under a 7-8 handicap can do that and these aren't beastly young go-getters. They are guys ranging from 30-55 years old and different body types

A 7 iron nowadays can be anywhere from 30 degrees to 35 degrees. To put that in perspective my Eye2 6 iron is 32 degrees. I certainly could hit that "6 iron" 150 yards. My modern 7, which is i believe 32 degrees aswell, i'll hit according to GPS anywhere from 158-165 ish on a good shot

I am nowhere near the longest player out of our A players. I would say maybe 25% of them are longer then me
