I play a stock seven iron for 170 carry (lasered 174 yard par three Friday, divot was six inches from the pin, so damn close).

No three iron, four iron is 210 carry.

But again, like in every distance thread, I have to mention the 4,000' of altitude we play at. I figure at sea level my numbers are probably around 155-160 and 185-190 carry.

I was hitting 7 iron in a lesson yesterday and Flightscope was saying 160 odd but not sure how accurate that was because have been a lot less than that I think in real life conditions, or perhaps the lesson had just upped my ballstriking a lot. Will tell when it stops raining and I can actually get a chance to play!

Who rolls out their 7 iron 9 yards?

Let me clarify, lets say I hit it to 175, so it will bounce and release up to 3-4 yards, this is actual numbers from my fitting last january, plus I put C Taper 130X on my Protos which lowered my ball flight and lowered the spin as well, they work perfectly for me since I know exactly what the ball will do, I guess to be clear I can hit the 7i from 170 to 182 depending on the situation (lie, wind, off the tee, etc) with roll included, does that help?

Lots of folks are looking for low spin/launch everything when that may not be the the best thing. I'll rarely, if ever roll out an iron (maybe a 4) unless it's on purpose (punch, etc.). I want my irons to go a certain distance. No, or VERY little roll.

That said, a lot of people know exactly how much roll they can account for. A lot of people don't.

That's because you hit the ball so high. :-)

For those of us in New England, at least in my experience, the courses are usually fairly soft. Not much roll anyway.

Of course everyone is longer. The new 7-iron is longer, and has jacked lofts. It plays like the old 6 iron, only a 1/2" longer.. And the ball is jacked. I'm 50 years old and hit my 7-iron 170, on average. Y? Because I have shaft lean. Could I swing harder? Sure!. ......Who cares.........I think LUMA hit it hard, closet to the hole wins. No matter how you get there......The KEY is hitting the 7-iron the same yardage consistently.......

I can reach a green 150 yards away with my 7 iron. Thats not carry but short and 10 yards run. Also the weather has to be good. no wind in my face. Sometimes I used it from 130 if the pin is in the back and i choke up.. It is a comfortable club.. Alot of club fitters will use a 7 for what ever reason. I guess because its easy to hit.

It depends on the conditions and shot I want to play. Going from recent memory, I've played it on shots ranging from about 130-160 yards, excluding punch and specialty shots.

Stock loft MP-32's DG S-300's.

7i: 165-170 no roll out. Can hit it further, but not accurately.

3i: Not sure on carry, but usually ends up 210-220.

I hit the ball pretty high. All the way up to a 4 iron on a 200+y par 3, I get minimal roll. Anything 7i and down stops either next to the divot, or back a few feet.

But if I'm hitting from the fairway, I just let the 3 and 4 go and do whatever they want. At that point, I don't sweat it to much.
