714 AP2 Paint

Jeckert07

Recommended Posts

I have played 5-6 rounds and 2-3 range sessions with my 714 AP2's and just noticed that the paint fill for the club numbers on the soles is starting to come off. I have never seen this happen before, especially not on a $1100 set of irons...has anyone else had this happen? It's obviously not a huge deal, but I do like to keep my clubs looking as clean as possible and this is a bit of a bummer! Anyone know what I can do here?

Thanks for the help...

It happens. It's no big deal. There are easy ways to touch it up if desired.

If you look at some of the pros bags the AP2's each year seem to have problems with the paint falling out. I noticed it happening mainly in the 'FORGED' on the back cavity of my 710's. I took it as a sign I needed to do my own paintfill on them and moved on down the road.

Get little jar of paint and some tooth picks and put your own custom touch on them!

I buy the paint pens from a hobby/craft store. I go over the numbers, let it dry and clean up the excess with 0000 steel wool. A lot cleaner and easier for me than messing with little paint brushes.

I remember reading on team titleist that they would fix this for you if you sent them back, IMO it wouldn't be worth the time to send them back to titleist but if you want to it is an option
Yep, this is true, I got what seemed to be a generic response from them as well as others have had it with their other irons, it happens mostly if hitting off of range mat which often have sand and debris in them. Titleist said their happy to touch them up if you send it in.

Just go to the art store or hobby shop and buy some touch up paint. Its really easy to do. Of course you will have to pay for shipping.........
They are less than a year old should be under warranty. If you really don't want to paint them bring them back to were you bought them and let them ship it out.

My new AP2 PW lost its black sole paint also. I've never had that happen. I repainted it but it doesn't quite look as good as the others. Whatever, no biggie. Not worth fussing over unless something else happens.

This is definitely an interesting topic. I have stripped and paint filled many clubs before but on my ap2s the process was quite different. I was actually able to take a small dentist pick and literally flake off the paint in the numbers and "forged" engraving. Usually OEM paint fill requires a chemical stripper to remove but a couple drags over the titleist paint with the pick and it was all gone. I re-did all the paint fill and have had zero problems. Of course, when clubs are used in/on a more abrasive surface they will wear faster.

I actually like when clubs wear over time, granted usually that's longer than a week.

I don't care if your playing a million dollar set of irons...when you beat clubs into the ground...paintfill on numbers are going to wear. Some way some how.

Like others have said ...just go buy some testors paint and slap it in there.
I believe everyone knows paint will eventually wear/fall out, it seems most AP2 owners are just surprised how fast it's happening. In the past I've played a single set for over a decade without any sole paint loss. Losing paint in a week or two is pretty weak. Sure grab some paint, I paint my own clubs but you really shouldn't have to this early.

There seems to be a durability issue with the 714s. Granted, paint will wear off over time but I'm experiencing the same after only a month's worth of use. I couldn't care less about that, but discovered the chrome plating flaking/bubbling off one of them, so I sent it in.

Interesting, I have to conclude Titleist are making some cost savings on their paint process. Particularly as they seem to offer a no quibble touch up service.
Disappointing, hope their senior management gets on the case.

I've got a set of ping i20's that did the same thing. now I do not now if this is the reason or not but I've got some buddies that work at Sherwin Williams and they told me that cause of EPA regulations on oil based paints that the quality of paints are going down hill fast. may not be titleist or pings fault. may just be what they are dealt with.
