My Apex/Apex pro combo set pics added plus first range review.

Here is my story. In December I ordered the Titleist 714 CB 5-7/MB 8-PW with KBS C-Tapers. Then a buddy gave me the Apex irons to hit for the hell of it. They felt great. I kinda had buyers regrets about the 714s (well not really).

To make a long story short, I'm walking through the PGA Tour Superstore this weekend and there is a used set of Apex irons on the rack in mint condition, barely used for $599 (4-PW) with Regular flex XP 95 shafts. Then I find out all used cubs have an additional 25% discount on them. Wrong shafts and wrong flex, but for $450 how can I pass that up. I could probably make $200-300 on them by just listing them on eBay as is.

So I now call my Dad and ask him if he wants them. I know these clubs are not going to fit his 68 year old swing. The shafts are too heavy and the heads are probably not forgiving enough for him. I tell him if he doesn't like them I will buy them back from him. The deal is too good and even if I throw in new shafts for the 4-PW, I'm still ahead of the game on a set that retails for $1,100.

Topic pretty much says it all. It has been a while since I have ordered a new set of irons built to my specs, and man does it feel good when they finally show up on your door step. I will say this, the pro's look REALLY good......I mean really good. I had only seen a demo 6 iron in the pro's, until these showed up. I had hit the demo 6 iron in both the standard and pro irons, so I ordered based on my specs and doing some research as to which shaft to go with (went with the KBS tour v 120x ssx1). I am so glad I went with the pro's in the 8-aw as they look so much better than standard Apex in those irons. I like the standard Apex up to the 7 iron, but after that the look just does not fit my eye. I can't wait to get these out on the course, now if this crappy weather here in Missouri would just go away!

Picked up my new babies today from my club builder and had some Pure p2 grips installed, and had the swing weight checked on all the irons. The SW came in at d2 in the longer irons and d3 in the shorter clubs, just how I wanted. I also had my club guy measure the flex on the 4i, 6i, and the 8i and those 3 spec'd out like they had been frequency matched. I did not get to do all the clubs as he was busy, but he did say that he rarely sees irons that are factory built that frequency match, so that was good to know. I had the KBS tour v 120x ssx1 installed, and these are plenty firm......very butt stiff...glad I soft stepped them. I got to hit a few in his hitting bay, and while they felt good, I am going to wait until I get a few rounds in before doing a review on performance, as I have not played golf in over 3 months. My set make up is Apex 4-7i and pro 8i-aw. Here are a few pics to show how they setup.

Sorry for the crooked pics, still not that adept on uploading pics from the iPad.

First range session with this setup. I really like the KBS tour v shaft, it gives a mid-high ball flight on the mid and long irons, and a high but controlled flight on the shorter irons. I am really glad I went with the 120x ssx1 as I love the weight and feel of these shafts......I was a bit worried that the shafts may be too much for me as they are really butt stiff, but based on the ball flight I was getting, I no longer have that worry. I can definitely tell a difference in the standard Apex irons vs the pros. The pros have more of a thump solid feel and the Apex have a solid but a bit clicker feel. I will say that the range I hit at has really crap range balls......pretty much nothing but top flite, molitor, and other old range rocks, so the slightly clickier feel of the standard apex will probably be offset by my game ball (Prov1x/Lethal). I was hitting off of mats as we still have snow on the ground, but it did get to 52* today so I was at least able to get outside. Of the few decent balls I had in my bucket, I could tell the ball flight is exactly what I was looking for....mid/high with lower spin than my previous irons. I do think I will need to weaken my 6i & 7i by 1 degree to match up a bit better with my 8-aw pros, but all in all, the distance gap is not bad. First impressions are very positive, and even with the cold weather, and the hard range balls, the feel is really good with this setup. My SS with a 6i is 90-92 mph for the guys that are considering the tour v 120x.

Well, you definitely have me beat on the crappy cold weather. I have a good buddy that works in Florida, and he just loves to rub in the fact that it is 78* and that he MIGHT have to wear a long sleeve shirt with his shorts when he goes out to dinner any given night. With this nasty polar vortex I keep hearing about, everyone in the mid to upper states may not be playing golf till July.

Mine came in today too! And I just ordered them exactly a week ago! 1 week for a custom built set of clubs? Unreal good customer service. Callaway really gained a loyal customer with my experience! Now I can't wait to try out the X2Hot Pro woods to go along with them :)

I ordered mine on the 17th and they showed up today...not bad on a custom set. I can't tell you how many times I checked my iPhone to look up the tracking on UPS. I had the grips placed loose in the box as I have a set of black Pure p2 grips ready to go on, but I gotta say I kind of like the simple look of the stock Lamkin with nothing but the Callaway chevron on them. Decisions decisions

Good for you. I thought the Apex looked great and felt great. The Pros are beautiful, but the look is a little scary from the forgiveness standpoint. As a shareholder, I'm glad to see so many happy Cally customers.

Thanks for the congrats guys, I have been debating over the last 60 days on what irons to go with. There are so many good choices out right now,it is hard to make a bad decision. I have literally retooled 80% of my bag over the last few months, so I am really looking forward to some warm weather. These are hands down the best looking set of irons that I have ever owned. I hope they play as good as they look. My launch monitor numbers compared to my old irons showed some really great potential.

My only worry is the 6 degree gap between my apex 7i and the apex pro 8i. I will probably need to do a little tweaking, but only after getting a good couple rounds in first.

Congrats to those of you who have received your new irons. The 54's, Apex Pros and I25's are all great sticks. I received my Apex Pros almost a month ago. I've hit them at the range 5 or 6 times and they are a fantastic set of irons.

I agree about Callaway customer service. I ordered a set of Apex Pros last month from the PGA store. I called Callaway to find out why my order hadn't arrived. They put me on hold, called the PGA Store and confirmed that the order was never sent in. Although Callaway was at no fault at all, they still rushed the order and I had the irons in four days. While I was on the phone with Callaway they asked me which is my favorite Callaway ball. I said that I hadn't tried any of their new balls but that I really liked the Hex Chrome. When the clubs arrived they came with a dozen Hex Chromes. Class act all the way.

I am going tomorrow to have the grips installed.....still not sure which ones to put on.....the stick lamkin or the pure p2 wraps in black. The high temps here are not going to be above 45 degrees for over a week, but it think I will definitely at least try to get some range time in before then. I will do a full review on the tour v 120x shaft ssx1 after I get some time in with them.

I went with a combo set (7-PW Pro, 5 & 6 Apex). There is the same 6* gap, but it is hasn't been a problem for me. I'm seeing about a 12 yard gap between the 6 & 7 irons. I went through a fitting a couple of weeks ago at Callaway HQ. They said they are not finding that many players need to adjust lofts who go with combo sets.

[/quote]just bend em...make your pw-8 a lil strong...1 deg on pw and maybe 2 deg on 9 and 8....or 1 deg strong on pw-8 and you could prolly bend 7 iron 1 deg weak....its cast but it will bend 1 deg fairly easy....you could get the gaps pretty close that way

I am hoping that is the case with me, but if not, I have a really good club builder here locally that can bend them for me. If I do bend any lofts, I will probably go 1* weak in 6 & 7 iron as I am more of a digger and I don't want to reduce any bounce.

quick question to the poster who mentioned shipping new clubs without the grips. If you specify D2 swingweight, i assume that will be the weight had they installed the grips? i'm wondering because I would like to do the same, but only if you can still request swingweight as if they were installed.

I did not specify weight, as they are already listed as D2 on the website. I took them over to my club builder and dropped them off today to get my pure p2 grips installed. I actually ordered the grips separately because I knew I was going to put the p2 grips on and I did not want to have to cut off 8 brand new grips. I will Swing weight all the irons when I go pick them up either Monday or Tuesday, and post the SW back in this thread. It is going to be a high temp of 22* here on Sunday and 17* on Monday, so I am not in a huge rush to get them back. My club guy also has a trackman, so I am going to try to get with him next week and go thru each iron to make sure they are spec'd out correctly. I am a little worried about that 6 degree gap between the Apex 7i and Apex pro 8i as you can really notice a big difference just looking down at them.
