x100 Hard stepped

I couldn't find much info on this. I've always used S 300 shafts in my irons and always hit the ball really high . I been taking lessons for 3 yrs now (20-30 hr lessons). My instructor suggested I put X100 shafts in my irons hard stepped.

He's saying that i'am making a good swing but i'am so strong that that s300 are too flexible. I never really heard of anyone getting them hard stepped. would just normal x100 do the job

Forgive my statement if you like your instructor, but my first thought is: [i]"Get another instructor"[/i].

I've played a lot of golf, with a lot of people, and played with some top professionals on both tours. NONE of them needed X100 shafts hardstepped. Are you certain that you heard this correctly? If he honestly thinks this, I'd seek assistance elsewhere.

While it is possible to need something more stout for you than what you have been using, without facts(data/ numbers) to back up his beliefs, my suggestion is to find a club fitter/ teaching professional that knows the golf swing and has the experience in making fact based statements. You will be better served in this way.

First thing you need to do is to figure out what your swing speed is. Best idea is to get on a monitor and get some numbers. My suggestion would be if you're above 105mph with the driver (at a reasonable length) then you're probably better with x100s straight in or soft stepped if your transition is smooth. Hard stepped I agree is quite stiff, but first you gotta get the SS figured out

iam around 110 with the driver 45.5 length. Iam might just do a mizuno fitting

It's possible. I had a fitting with an OEM on Tuesday and they put me in x100 hard stepped 1x.

I would not recommend a hardstepped X100 with a 110mph driver SS unless you have an unbelievably sudden and violent transition at the top, also...what do you consider "high" for your ball flight? Have you ever seen a Tour Pro hit a mid iron, they hit them miles high in the air and they land soft. Hardstepped X100 would lose you carry yardage, IMO. I'm at 118-120mph driver SS and I have a pretty quick transition and even I would only play X100 straight in. Do you know any more stats? such as your angle of attack, launch angle, spin RPM and swing speed for a mid iron, say 6 iron? That would be very helpful information and would help to generate a much more informed response.

It does happen from time to time, but it's not terribly common. I would usually want to see a six iron swing speed above 97mph before I would consider hardstepping an X100, the average tour pro Six iron swing speed is 92mph, many of them play X100 straight in. If you put X100 straight in and find it not to be to your liking and you want stiffer you could always just purchase one extra shaft then hard step them 1x. You can also trim 3/8" off the tip of the taper tip X100 to increase the flex by 3 CPM, which would be hardstepping 1x as well. Yea, hardstep x100 sounds a little nutty. I'm a touch faster than you at 112-115 and I play s300 at the moment which does seem a tad flimsy but I enjoy how they feel. My personal shaft of choice is black gold x-flex but sets in good condition are getting harder to find.

Suggesting hard-stepping X100 shafts makes an instructor who only the OP knows anything about a crazy man...OK. The instructor who has seen the OP make a ton of golf swings while nobody else in this thread has; he must be crazy. If that's true, then any fitter or instructor who suggested Project X 6.5 or KBS Tour X to one of their students must also be crazy, since X100 HS x1 freqs out very close to these shafts.

Do yourself a favor and just ask your instructor to clarify/reiterate his suggestion, and then give whatever he did in fact suggest a try. He knows more about how you swing the golf club than anybody on this forum. That's really the only way you'll know for sure if it will work better for you or not. BTW, I've used X100 HS x1 before and its not that big of a deal. Didn't feel any different than straight in, but did bring ball flight down.

I've played them hard stepped. Still not as stout feeling as PX 7.0 which is what I changed from. Currently playing soft stepped c tapers x and they are great so far. Low launch similar to PX but smoother feel like x100. I would do a fitting before making the jump though. Test out a variety of shafts since you may not like the feel or launch of the shafts he suggested.

You can try it, and if not to your taste, you will have a nice set of varying length pry bars.
