Sanibel Island

Going to Sanibel Island soon for some buddies golf. I found the Dunes on the web as well as Sanibel Island golf course. The reviews on Sanibel GC did not look good.

Any suggestions?

Sanibel and Captiva are beautiful to stay for a vacation, but not exactly golf destinations. If you're looking for true championship level courses you'll have to leave the island.

Stop by the Mucky Ducky on your way back to Captiva/Sanibel after golf...

Yes sir! Sunset cocktails at the Mucky Duck on Captiva are a must. A great place and very nostalgic for me. My wife's family owned a place on Captiva for years and we even honeymooned there. Sorry to threadjack, but anyone remember Timmy's Nook? (On the property that is now the Green Flash)

Just spent the week on Sanibel. You can play the Dunes at midweek for around $115.00 but I recommend heading back over to Ft. Myers. Doc Fords for the shrimp and calamari.

here's the lowdown:

Sanibel courses: Dunes- my grannie lives there, stay away. overpriced and short. don't care for it, but it is close.

The sanctuary is awesome. great course paspalum(sp?) grass. private, need a connection.

beachvie, now called sanibel island GC: Short muni, decent track, fun for late afternoon rounds.

off sanibel:

old corkscrew- 45min drive, great tough course, worth playing once, easier the second time around.
river hall- decent course 30-45min drive, hampton golf, DLIII design. fun course, challenging in some place.
shell point- close to the isalnd but usually crowded, not too tough, i'd stay away
Eagle ridge- nnice simple, nothing remarkable, but nothing off-putting about the course, been a few years since I've gone

Id like to try eastwood GC and Ft myers CC, even though its a muni, its a donald ross original.

hope that helps.

Got a connection at Sanctuary, but may not do it, greens fees are pretty pricy, playing corkscrew, the Dunes and maybe Sanibel.

What was Timmy's Nook? And have you given the Green Flash a try? It's menu is extremely similar to the Mucky Duck, I'm assuming they either have the same supplier and/or are owned by the same person. I went to both on spring break this year, and they were both excellent as usual. Like others have said, you may want to golf elsewhere, but nothing beats going down to the Mucky Duck or the Green Flash and eating dinner while the sun sets.

P.S. to OP: If you want a unique experience on the island I've found the crab races at 'Tween Waters Resort to be pretty entertaining! Has anyone else gone?

The Dunes is worth a shot, its a short target type golf course with lots of water. Short doesn't mean easy by any means. Good track, nothing spectacular about it. First "aquatic range" I've ever hit on.

Stay away from Beachview (now Sanibel GC) unless you're looking for an afternoon 9 or similar.

Old Corkscrew is a must, sounds like you have that on your list already.

I'd definitely recommend Eastwood.

Shell Points good if you get an early time, or late afternoon time. It's also close to the bridge.

Ft. Myers CC is a good little course. It can get crowded and a little beat up from a lot of play, but overall it's a good course, and can't beat the price.

Westminster Golf Club in Lehigh, from what I remember last time I played it was a pretty good course. They have an event every week or other week that's a two man scramble shotgun. Good little change of pace for a buddies trip if you're interested in that.

Pelican Preserve in FM/Lehigh was another good track. (If you go there, get a morning time and grab sausage egg and cheese from the snackstand at the turn, trust me.)

If you're willing to travel to Naples/Marco, you can get a lot of good tracks down there.

If you're staying at a hotel, or even if you're not, stop by one, and grab a Lumpy's Flyer. It's a local golf shop on 41 in Ft. Myers, and the flyer literally has a map of all the golf courses in the area (Lee County and Naples). That can be a good reference. (Not sure if you can directly pick one up from the store, never tried.)

If you have any questions feel free to PM me, my parents have a house down there so I've been down 2-3 times a year for the past 4 or 5 years. Played many of the courses in the area.

Yup...they've ben holding those crab races forever. Touristy, but fun!

Timmy's Nook was an old bar/restaurant located in the same spot as the current Green Flash. It was popular with the locals, the snowbirds, and knowledgeable tourists alike. It was totally old-school, with knotty pine paneling inside, and propped up storm shutters with screened windows. The beer sat in a giant open cooler in crushed ice and the bottles were as cold as could be without actually being frozen. They were known for their CROW sandwich, which was fried grouper with lettuce, tomato, onion, and homemade tartar on toasted rye. The waitresses were as salty as the fisherman who frequented the place.

My wife and I used to walk down the beach from her family's place in the late afternoons for happy hour and a CROW sandwich. Timmy's Nook was a one-off, and the kind of place that you don't find too frequently anymore in our world of franchises, chains, and other commercial operations. Very fond memories...
