Not just the pros!

Managed to sneak out yesterday and get a round in. As I was waiting for the starter to get the groups in front of us organized and off, a lady walked up and asked if she could document what clubs were in my bag for the Darrell Survey.

I knew they surveyed the equipment used on the PGA Tour, but I didn't realize they also surveyed the equipment used by your average recreational golfer. Has anyone else ever encountered this situation?

I encountered this at while at the U.S. Mid Am.....I also thought this was for Pro's only.

Nope, they do this a lot. They were at my club in Portland, OR 2 days in a row last summer to ask everyone teeing off what was in their bag, as well as the ball you were playing and your golf shoes and golf glove.

 

I think they want to see if there is any correlation between tour usage and recreational golfers.

She had a name badge with her name and Darrell Survey on it plus some assorted paperwork with Darrell Survey on the letter head.

I think their original mission was to act as an enforcement mechanism of sorts to ensure the manufacturers that their contractors were actually adhering to the terms of their contracts, although these days with the amount of media coverage it would be easier for the OEMs to note that type of non-compliance.

 

But there's money to be made as well by collecting consumer data on golf club use, because the OEM's will pay good money to access reporting like this that's assembled by a reputable provider. The last part is key, because I'm not sure that any average Joe could do this type of survey at their local course and get a dime for it because the OEMs want reassurance that the data is accurate and statistically relevant.

 

I think the Darrell folks put out a big compendium each year on consumer preferences, and this is how they gather the data for that report.
