Putting .370 shaft in 910 5 wood (trick)

Im not sure if this has ever been tried or brought up..I tried to search and kept getting an error that I was searching keywords with too little characters or something..i get that all the time on here for some reason.

Anyway I had a un used 910 fairway head and a unused ahina 90 gram hybrid shaft with 910 hybrid tip ..I wanted to mate the 2..i came super close to ordering the $45 adapter from golfsmith ( yea I know that place I hate) when I had an idea...I went out to the shop and checked out the shaft and measured the very tip end , which I already knew would not go down into the fairway head...It was just a bit bigger. then measured the teeth on the adjustment collar for both...SAME....sooo I took the shaft to the bench grinder and carefully turned the tip end of the adapter down...took less than 30 seconds...popped it into the fairway ...nice tight fit..set to A1 and tightened the screw...Bam ..heavy x flex shaft , shorter length and did not use steel ( which I was tempted to do) ...Super easy and way cheaper than buying the adapter...Have not hit it yet, so could love it or could hate it...but both where near freebies so no loss either way.

If you don't care..cool.,.if that saves you a few bucks great., Im always appreciative when someone shares a shortcut with me, so just trying to do the same...

Nice work, it will be interesting to see how the shaft holds up though. I like 80+ in the 3 wood and if i went 5w (play 18* hd now) I'd love to go 90 although thats tougher to find unless you wanna go with the tried and true v2. Keep us posted on how it holds up

Just a word of caution. The shaft was designed with a particular wall thickness in the tip section to properly withstand the stresses placed on it during the swing and ball contact. Reducing that wall thickness will certainly result in a weaker tip section. Now I have no idea how much of a safety factor is built into the design or the specific forces it was designed around so I'm not saying that such alterations means that it will definitely fail on you at some time in the future. But but it does mean that statistically the alteration will result in a higher probability of failure. you'll have the best luck if you avoid any sudden reduction in width and make the taper from the orig diameter to the new diameter fairly gradual. Not sure but it also might increase the torque a little which could effect the feel. I do wish you luck with it though and do let us know how it goes.

EDIT - Sorry - I think I misread your post - you didn't alter the shaft itself but the outside diameter of the adapter instead. Very Interesting concept although the risks is probably somewhat similar. just changed the specific part to be concerned about. Definitely would like to see pics though.

here is tip after I turned it down.....its a very small amount that has to be removed...I don't see how its any different than the store bought adapter that golfsmith sells...except this way you should be able to keep all of the adjustment...Ive heard with some aftermarket tips you don't have all of the adjustment...

Thanks for sharing. I was envisioning much more of the barrel of the adapter being turned down. So yes, I wouldn't expect that to have anywhere near the structural impact I was suggesting. Probably will be fine.

Seems strange to me that if the difference between the two adapters is that small, why bother with two separate designs at all?

no problem guys...It really is a very small difference...It could be done with rough sand paper or a fine file in 30 min or so by hand...Id say just test fit all along and make it a snug fit.. not too loose...But in the end the screw and the adjustment collar is really whats holding it together.
I ruin a lot of things doing stuff like this ( not just golf stuff) but I find a lot of good short cuts too. I have no idea why Titleist felt the need to make them different...Some engineers idea im sure. Anything to make a separate part number to sell later.
