Nicklaus missed the Masters once with back problems....wasn't the end of the world.

Still, winning a major with Tiger in the field is better than winning a major without Tiger around.
What?

If i won a Major against a bunch of school girls, I'd be a freakin major winner!
Correct, and Gary Player proved it in 1959, winning the British Open with precisely zero American touring pros in the field of 90. The three Americans in the field were an amateur, a senior, and an obscure club pro. The best finish was by the 48-year-old amateur, who missed the cut by three shots.

There was only one Australian in the field. I'd guess it had only two or three of the world top 20 in the field (a guess is the best anybody can do, since there were no world rankings, and very little international competition to use as a basis for even estimating them), and only 10 or 12 of the top 100. It might have been as strong as a modern John Deere, but I doubt it.

But you're right, it counts as a major, just like all the other weak majors of the 60's. They're very useful for proving how great Jack's competition was. Just don't look too closely at the fields.
Yep maybe. Was that Players fault? Did he stop them travelling?

Now if we look at certain American tournaments, they heavily discouraged players from other countries.

Go one further, The PGA actually banned someone did they not? Reason? Too good! Bobby Locke must have been playing against weak fields too!

Maybe. Decompression helped me to the point where I didn't need injections or pain killers, but I wouldn't be able it hit hundreds of balls a day and hold up to the practice schedule of a tour pro. Walking 18 holes just kills me. Plus, decompression takes a lot if time to see results, it's not instantaneous. Dwight Howard had a similar issue, had surgery, and was playing pro basketball within the year. But who knows what' the real story is. Spasms are an effect, not a cause. A bulging disc might be the cause. He or his manager haven't confirmed the story. We still might not know the extent of the problem.

I had bulging discs in my neck a few years ago. I'm surprised he could even swing a golf club.

He's rested, taken time off and had the best PT people working on his back. There must be a mechanical problem somewhere, ruptured disc, bulging disc, something like that. As a question for those who have had this kind of problem, would walking the hills at Augusta make it worse, or have any effect?
ANYTHING can cause back pain. Walking, standing, reaching to tie your shoes, picking up my son. I strained my back doing all of those things. Walking up hills at ANCC I'm sure will not make it feel good.
Actually walking up hills shouldn't be that bad, walking down hills would be more likely to cause pain.

If you want to know if he's playing or not just keep an I eye on the sports books. Those "guys" will know what's up.
I have no idea how the sportsbooks maintain that type of mysterious and all-knowing reputation. It's laughable. Nothing could be further from the truth. I worked as sportsbook supervisor and know dozens of guys in the field. They never get anything first. Or even second. They find out at the same time as everybody else and then scramble to take something off the board to prevent a wager. Heaven forbid they might actually risk something.

Sportsbooks survive based on power ratings and 11/10. Any other version is bunk. They don't have a fleck of so-called inside information. Granted, there are some guys in the field who enjoy the mythology, and the fact that the mythology lends itself to TV appearances in which they can pretend to have special insight. If you ever worked in a sportsbook for one day you'd realize how hilarious it is. The books are life and death to have the employees show up on time, and for the number on the board to match the one in the computer. These days the sportbooks are being de-emphasized since the percentage profit is very low compared to other casino games. That's the reason the footprint is so much smaller than previous decades. Heck, nowadays some casinos are even scrambling to make dual use of the area late at night, once the games are finished. The Imperial Palace started that trend. They turned their sportsbook into a karaoke lounge at night.

Future book odds like Masters prices are the easiest thing for a book to deal. Just make sure every number is a ripoff. Move numbers down but never up. The house take will be astronomical but that doesn't matter because the tourists who bet into that market have no idea how to calculate the house take. They just want 20 bucks on Tiger or Phil regardless of the price. You could make it 1/5 and most of them would still agree to punch the ticket.

I had a bulging disc in my neck (C5/6). Utter agony for a day or two until the anti-inflammetories kicked in and I had physio. I was golfing the next weekend with the aid of strong pain medication, and a month later, I was swinging full out again. If I had've needed surgery, it would have been quite a simple op to drain the fluid from the disc.

Not the biggest Tiger fan, but events are invariably better when he is playing well (and usually worse when we miss out on the players who are playing well in favour of seeing him hack up a 74).

I will miss rooting for Tiger to not win his 15th major.
I think if Tiger cared at all about his fans, and golf, he would sign medical releases and allow his doctors (who have nothing better to do I'm sure) to post his medical records, including all pertinent MRI images, with red arrows pointing to the important sh*t, and explain precisely what the issues are.

FORE RIGHT!!!!

I had 3 bulging discs in my L3/L4/L5 and i was in pain for months. I'm talking about the kind of pain that kept me from being able to tie my shoes without shooting pain. I had 2 months of PT and i wasn't in nearly the type of shape Tiger is currently in. I was in good shape back then, but the back injury really took the wind out of my sails.

I remember thinking it was just a kidney stone and I kept playing golf one Wednesday morning. I was on a par 3 and i remember taking a swing and immediately going down to one knee. It felt like someone literally drove a knife into my lower back.

Those of you who've never had back pain can't really understand how painful a back injury is. Hopefully Tiger will take the time off that he needs and get himself right. A bulging disc can be treated, a herniated disc needs to be operated on.

For anyone that really interested - Here's the progression: Bulging, Herniated, Ruptured.

PT & OT have a lot of treatments that can help a bulging disc. The real problem is the activity level and type of activity that a pro golfer has to maintain work against PT & OT curing this problem.

They can talk spasms all they want but the real issue is what that "bulge" is pressing against. If it's the sciatic nerve then the pain is excrutiating.

Most doctors will tell you that surgery is a last resort. That goes for the rank and file patient as well as a pro athlete. They'll take the time to try everything possible short of surgery to see if some relief can be achieved.

Tiger has 30+ years of stress on his back. It may be next month or next year...but if he's going to be truly cured then it will probably be surgery. The bulge can be "pushed back in" but it's always going to be weak and subject to further bouts.

Eventually it will pop and that will be it.

PS: Mine ruptured on one of thos stretch/inversion tables. Then it was surgery. Pain free now. Can't play worth a *$(# though.

Bulging disks are only a problem when they actually impinge upon something, in this case obviously a nerve. Bulging disks can also be quite normal and cause no pain. Tons of people have CT scans and MRIs which show bulging disks which is not the source of their pain. So, a bulging disk does not necessarily equal pain.

You could have a horribly painful back sprain and your MRI could show a number of non-impinging disk bulges which have nothing to do with the pain. So Tiger having a bulging disk only means something if that disk is squeezing a nerve and is the actual source of his pain. If it is, he ain't playing Masters. Then again, this guy played a major with a broken leg! ;)

Hopefully Tiger will contact those doctors I listed, take their advice, rest, consider Stand & Tilt because it is easier on the back then man up like Jack did and take a few Motrin and stop whining.

For all the help I provided, he can send WRX free passes for two at a fine steak house or a at least a sleeve of golf balls. The new Nike Tours.
What? You don't like Tiger and you're a Nike man? Holy Knight!
LOL! I do not want to see him hurt. He should be able to heal up and get well if he uses common sense. I am not sure about some f the people he has advising him sometimes.

I have Nike golf shoes that need to be reglued again plus Keen sandals. Keen is in Oregon so they may be Nike. A few of their golf balls are okay. I hit one of their drivers when Ant Kim was hot during club day and it was okay. I hope AK can make it back.

The bulging disk news on Tiger is not good but it is not terrible. There are a lot of outpatient therapies available. Seriously, if he finds the right doc - he might be able to do outpatient and still play at The Masters. He needs to get it fixed.
Maybe Tiger should look into this:
