Titleist AP2 alternatives?

MG 1977

Recommended Posts

I'm mulling over a new set of irons. I've had every generation of AP2's so far and I have liked the head profile, feel, forgivness & performance. I'm just after alternatives to try from other brands before decideing on my next set. So I'm looking for a forged head with tungsten weighting in a nice compace head,,, ideas please. I can think of the Mizuno MP59's. What about the Adams CMB, I'm sure there are plenty of other options?

I agree with the first post, and the adams cmb's are some of the greatest irons I have ever hit. I would love to try them out again sometime soon, but they are so good because of the balance of feel and distance. It seems like an iron that is on 5 hour energy: it's just that good. If you aren't that huge of a fan of adams, then the i20's can be had for cheap on ebay, and they almost have the feel of a forged iron. Either one is a great choice to replace ap2.

+1 here. I have never hit the CMB, but have heard nothing but good things about them. I can't imagine them being a bad club considering they were the last forged iron that Adams designed before the Evil Empire bought them out. I can speak to the quality of pre-TMAG Adams irons; as I had a set of CB2's and they were fantastic irons. Nice thing about the CMB's is that you can get some really nice or brand new sets off BST or the Bay for under $400. Only downside to the CMB's is that their stock shaft is the C Taper, which can be a pretty rough shaft for a lot of people to handle.

As for the MP59: I personally do not like this offering from Mizuno. Now before all the Mizzy's fanboys get their panties in a bind; I am a huge Mizzy fan as my last set of sticks were 53 and 63's. I tried to love the 59 but it just doesn't have that trademark soft Mizuno feel, and compared to the CMB and AP2, it is far less forgiving.

You can't go wrong with anything mentioned here.

I personally think the ap2 s are the best selection. Look at their use on the tours compared to the other models too. They are a great club.

I would suggest going to the store and hitting a bunch of different clubs. You will know once you hit the right club. I went in thinking I would want the MP64's and ended up liking the MP69's and MP4's better which was a complete surprise to me because they are more blades than MC's. You never really know what you will like until you hit them. That is the true test!

+1 for the Apex Pros. I initially had AP2s at the top of my list but for me the Apex Pros were more forgiving, softer, and longer.

Forged head with tungsten is going to narrow it down a touch. Even the MP-59's are technically Titanium billets forged into the back of the head. Multi-material construction is something I'm a big fan of, so these are the types of irons I focus in on as well.

Adams CMB and now the XTD's
Bridgestone J33 Combos
Cobra Amp Cell Pro and Amp Forged
Ping S-55 (not forged, but you have to try them if you love the AP2's)
Ping Ansers
MP-59 is still a great set
Cally Apex Pros
AP2's are basically the set a lot of these followed after. Still have my original AP2's which are still relevant.

+ 1 on the Cobra Amp Cell Pros and the Amp forged. I have had both and they are both great irons. On multiple testing days they both beat out the AP2s for my bag.

When I bought my new irons I tested the Mizuno MP-59, Callaway Apex Pro and Titleist AP2. In the end I plumped for the AP2, but they are all worth testing.

I went from the 08 AP2s to the Adams CMB and so far I love them. I think main difference is the C-taper shaft fits my swing better. But they are great clubs and and be found for around $300

I like the 59's, but they are nothing at all like AP2's, of any year. The 59's feel like a cross between the CB's and MB's to me, and I played two of my four best rounds last year with 59's. The 54's are really nice, but still would still consider them closer to CB's.

I did the same but tested the MP-64's and they are very nice also. Still the AP2's won out for me
True test isn't indoors off matts with all due respect, it's off grass with uneven surfaces. After flushing 64's indoors thought I had found THE set, not the case when playing in real conditions. I play to an 8 handicap and was gaming the AP2's but was looking for something better like most of us do on here; I found out quickly that what I was gaming already in the AP2 was THE set.

Really? How does that explain the "magical" Velocity Slot that has popped up in bottom of both their irons?
