This will be about blades... Yes it will. But.... It will not be about if we should play.

It will be a call out to all those that asked the Blade Questions, bought the clubs, played the clubs and now, are you still playing with them and are they working for you?

So I have been a poster about 1 year now. A year ago I started a "Blades thread" I got hammered, but tried anyways.

1 Year later, I still have my blades but I do not play them. I practice with them but I still play my JPX825pros on the course.

When I played both sets there was no real benefit and no real score change. My Ball striking improved but what I could do with the blades I could do with the JPX's So. I figured why change just stick with the JPXs

I play with what I prefer to look at & that usually gives me the best results. I've tried everything from cb's to blades & there's not much of a difference in scores.I'm sticking with the Cobra s3 pro's for the 3rd year.Find something that you like & stick with it.

Thanks Tinman, but again this is not a should I play/play what you want thread. Im asking for all those that wanted to play them. Drank the Cool-aid, are they still playing them now or did they realize something?

Dont tell me that all those that started blade threads quit the forums because they got their feelings hurt.

Switched from 962b irons to 712mb (simply because liked look, thought needed something new) for about 6 months after playing 962b for many years, actually had more tendency to overdraw long irons in 712mb, also much more comfortable with 962b soles from various lies/conditions, back to 962b and all was back right with game.

The only reason I play my blades is because I like the look of the thin topline.

I made it easy on myself. I sold/traded every other set except my blades (712MB's), played with them all last year and proceeded to have my best scoring year ever. I lowered my handicap from 9.9 to a solid 5.9, then went out and bought a set of Nike VR Pro blades this winter. All I play are blades now and don't see myself going back. If I put a bad swing on the ball I expect to be punished with a poor result... it is what it is. I'm glad I switched from AP1's to the 712MB's and now VR Pro's as I feel they were masking swing flaws that I just got complacent and hit them because I could. I'm going to be competing in the NYSGA Amateur Tournament series this year and I don't believe I would have improved my game enough to compete previously without making the switch.

Oh yeah, the topic.... I have had a couple of bouts with this although I never did post a thread about it. I've had S59's two different times. Albeit not true MB's, but Ping's most playa-ish selection... kinda blade-ish. I love the look of the small head and thin lines. Both times when I started hitting them like crap because I was swinging like a (enter adjective here) I snap reacted and dumped them rather than learn how to correctly hit a golf ball. I've also had some shovels and some in between sticks such as W/S Di5's and Ci9's. One of my favorite sets i've had though are W/S Pi7's, again not a true blade but pretty playa-ish. Still have them in fact, just in case. Alas I craved the Pings once again and so I recently acquired a nice set of S58's. This time they are here to stay unless i'm able to trade both the S58's & Pi7's for some S55's or S56's (not likely, but who knows.)

I'm more knowledgeable about the swing and my swing in particular these days and so if i'm hitting them like crap i'm humble enough to know it's me now. Not to mention the fact that GI's or other middle of the road clubs haven't shown a huge improvement anyways. I'm going to play what I like and learn to play them well.

I played the Nike Split Cavity irons for almost all of last season and played well with them but I never fell in love. This year I went with the new Tour Preferred irons and did a combo set with the MBs 7-PW and CBs 3-6 with the idea of having forgiveness in the long irons would help me. At this point I am now going to be moving on from the CBs and going with MC or MBs in my long irons. The bigger chunkier CB head just does not hit the ball the way I want my irons to. The forgiveness is there for sure but the feel and turf interaction is not what I want.

So I went the opposite way and no, the more forgiving GI irons will not stay in the bag

I don't know what anyone would realize any different with playing blades versus playing any other type of club. I purchased some MP-32s a couple of years ago, I would consider them blade-like. I also purchased some MP-53s because they were brand new for half price (a lot of golfers I play with even consider those blade-like).

I like both, the 53s are for sure a bit more forgiving. However, with the 32s (way more forgiving than the blades I used before I stopped golfing 30 years ago) I can still hit pins and flight the ball. If I feel crappy than 53s, smoking - 32s.

Now I do have one real used blade - a Hogan Apex 2i with a stiff shaft - my goal is to one day get a ball airborne with that sucker, still trying.

Which blades did you play?

A lot of folks would go the other way....no difference in score and you may as well enjoy the 'buttery' soft feeling of blades.

To me, turf interaction should be a bigger factor in which irons people play....

Sorry Auto Correct on the Cool-Aid vs Kool-Aid.

As for the what blades did I play with? Nike 03 Forged. Got them Cheap and figured I would give them a try.

"Buttery Soft Feel" If I hit my Mizunos good they feel about the same. I dont feel much difference. Now if you compared something like Burner 1.0's to the Nikes then you can feel the clicky feel but beyond that, I have numb hands.

As for staying with my GI's well lets just say I hit the ball well 75% of the time. 25% if time I miss it just a little. The miss hit on the blade is more prevalent than on the GI. So even though I can hit both clubs about the same. My misses are less and more predictabl as discussed in many other blades threads.

Im just trying to stir the pot as people have preconceived thoughts of buying/trying blades. They ask for our opinion (which they really dont crare about) and a thread war breaks out, people get offended. But really, we dont know what the actual end result was. Did they keep playing it, did it help them in any way shape or form? Are their scores the same?

I know for what would rather find out results than just asking if I should play and get the obligatory "Play what you like" I would rather get an answer like, I played them it help me in X area but ultimately my scores were the same etc,,..

Game...Blouses.

To the OP....I've tried blades on various occasions, but always go back to something that is more forgiving. A friend of mine is the exact opposite. He's been through close to ten iron sets, but always goes back to his MP33s.

back to the topic...I still say play whatever you want..Play for the pure enjoyment , not always about the score. I will also admit that a certain set of 2007 callaway x forged still hasn't left my collection. I lov ethose irons and they are in no way shape or form a "blade" ...My only issue with them are non conforming grooves..I intend to compete some this summer in state amateur events and just don't want to be in love with an iron I cant use. If they were conforming I don't know if I could not game them .

Nope, no hurt feelings here. Still doing the lessons-first approach to the rebuild of my golf swing. So I haven't plunked down the coinage yet. That decision is still yet to be made. Ironically, I'm practicing with an MX-17 6 and 9 iron not to spec, not fit, as I'm literally just grooving feeling at this point. If I do hit balls, it's all doing imprint drills to this point, and I'm not worried at all where the ball goes.

Still loving this decision so far. Final bag clubs, we'll see. The time I will have for practice could be very variable, so certainly that will affect my choice, as well as trajectory, turf interaction, etc.

I took blades out of my bag this year. Between kids, age, and lack of time on the course I just didn't want to put in the effort. I no longer got the thrill of hitting them - only the trepidation of being on the first tee box and knowing that the whole round was going to be a struggle if my swing was off.

Good luck with all that's going on. Be them blades of GI, life has a way of making practice and playing time less of a priority.

I spoke way too soon. My S58's hit the BST tonight. Not because I was hitting them poorly though. Recent events in life combined with near future events make it so that I can't really have two sets of sexy irons and the Pings, as much as I like them, can't kick the W/S Pi7's out of the bag. I had the W/S's up for sale for a while and i'm glad they didn't sell. They're going to remain the gamers and another set of Ping S series will have come and gone. Oh well.
