MX 25 vs. MX 23 vs. 755

mizuno vs. titleist
Hi all. As much as it kills me to say this I just cant hit my Titleist 735s very well. I simply need a more forgiving iron but I dont want shovels though. I've pretty much narrowed it down to either Mizuno MX 23s or MX 25s or Titleist 755s. Has anyone hit all 3 of these or at least one or two of them and if so can you please give a review or comparison? Is it worth the extra money to go with the 25s over the 23s? I'm looking for something easy to hit but not huge. I'm a pretty good ballstriker but something with a little higher ballflight and more forgiveness would be nice. Thanks in advance for any help.

djt,

I'd be happy to add some comments in addition to the thread attached. As a 4 year owner of the 23's and having hit the other 2 irons listed, I think I can help give your much more perspective.

755's - I wouldn't go to the 755's looking for much more forgiveness over the 735's. The difference is small. The Tri-Spec shaft might help get the ball in the air a touch higher but outside of that you won't see much difference. 755's are definitely the least forgiving of the 2.

Clubhead-wise, the 23's and 25's are identical. Only the engineers at Mizuno and those that are very picky (i.e., the medallion on the 25's) will note and appearance difference.

The biggest difference between the 23s and 25s is the shaft. The Dynalite Gold SuperLite in the 25's play softer and hit the ball higher than their predecessor the standard weight Dynalite Gold shaft. If you put the Dynalite Gold's from the 23's into the 25's, you wouldn't notice a difference.

That said, the 23's are great all around clubs. I would say that the handicap range for the 23's is scratch to 18. I say scratch because if you are a scratch golfer, you get to play whatever you want. If you're playing above 18, there are much more forgiving iron sets available to help you. My handicap is 8 and I've never felt as I played better or as I played worse that I required an iron set change.

Well, I am a pretty good ballstriker i just naturally hit the ball low. I'm a 6 handicap but I honestly think that could drop if I hit some more greens. Hit the Callaway X-20 Tours with 5.0 PX Flighteds the other day and they were very nice... shafts felt good and couldnt seem to misshit them. I also liked the TM RAC LT2's. I hit the MX 23s a while ago and wasnt really too impressed. I think I might go with the Callaways.

Go with the 25's they offer the best combination of forgivness and feel of any iron I have tried. Lots of fitting and shaft options so you should be able to get the perfect set for yourself.

You may also want to look at Tourstage TS202s.

I have two sets, one with TFR 5.5 and one with PX HL shafts in 5.0 (they were not available in 5.5!)

I also bought a set of MX25 with TFR 5.5 shafts last autumn and have compared them side by side with my Tourstage set more than once.

Despite the fact that the Mizunos have a huge undercut cavity, I seem to get more forgiveness/accuracy and tighter dispersion with the TS 202s. Also ballflight is definitely lower with the TS irons, not much, but noticeable!

Furthermore, the Tourstage irons don't look as busy in the cavity and have a thinner topline, which I think is a great plus.

You'll be able to find them on ebay every now and then (or look in the BST section!)

Good luck!

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I'll be heading to the driving range this weekend and I'm going to hit a bunch of these irons and see how they work out. If anyone else has any more suggestions or advice please let me know. Thanks!

PS - Johann, how much would a very good condition set of TS202s cost me?

DJT,

I think you should be able to get a good set of TS202s between 300-400 $, a very good set below $500!

They are definitely worth it if you find a good set, wonderful soft forging.

In my opinion they are a much better iron than the MX25s, but there again, everyone has a favourite brand/iron!

Check on ebay and the BST section regularly, there are always some TS202s around! (there was a decent set some 4 weeks ago in BST - you can PM the seller to see if they are gone!)

Good luck!

Johann

In my opinion they [the Tourstage TS202s] the are a much better iron than the MX25s....

What do you base this opinion on? What makes the Tourstage TS202 irons much better than the MX-25 irons?

Scott

Scott,

as I wrote previously:

"Despite the fact that the Mizunos have a huge undercut cavity, I seem to get more forgiveness/accuracy and tighter dispersion with the TS 202s. Also ballflight is definitely lower with the TS irons, not much, but noticeable!

Scott, I also wrote that that everyone has their favourite iron / brand! I realize this is very much a personal thing and this is just my humble opinion, with which some golfers may agree and many will disagree. That's fine with me.

I have just been down the road you are on.

I ditched my 735s for MX 25s with DG R300 shafts. My coach advised that shaft for me as I would not be able to play the stock shaft as it would balloon. Even with that I am playing knockdowns with 2 club difference and an inch down the grip to play in the wind. The longer Irons in the MX 25s are so nice it is not funny.. I ditched a hybrid as well!!

Anyway. The MX 25s are the straightest club I have ever hit. I went looking for MP 27s but they were prohibitively expensive.

I actually loved the Titleist 704s also with the Nippon shafts.. they are better than the 755s with the tri spec IMO. That being said I went Mizuno as they really felt nice.

Good luck
