So I am playing with a friend of mine and his 16 year old daughter. We are playing the back tees at our facility on are on tee number one.

Some guy pull up in their carts and see her getting ready to tee off and roll their eyes and you can see them sighing and all that. She hits her tee shot 260 right down the middle.

:-)

Though my wife is a mere 13, she often plays from the White tees. Its fun watching the guys we get teed with, when she casually walks up on the White tee with them. Once one guy actually said, 'red tees are up there'. She turned, smiled and said I know. Sometimes I am embarrassed by males, as they are dam weak.

Golf and more specifically country clubs seem to be almost structurally misogynistic.

I expect that this won't change until the current generation of girls being raised playing the game hit the age that they become Country club members of their own... it is honestly sad and stupid of the current establishment to be more or less ignoring such a gigantic pool of potential contributors to the growth of the game.

Two incidents come to mind, one my wife, the other my then 11 y.o. daughter.

My wife and I were playing in her company league, the course was busy, as it was a Saturday. One one particular par 5, my wife finds her nemesis, a tall curtain of wetland plants. She drives into the hazard, takes her relief, and cannot get over the tall grass. After two more balls lost in the curtain, I dumbly suggested taking a drop on the other side. After I was politely told to shut up, I left to stand against a tree.
A foursome of older males got to the tee box and began hurling some of the most insulting words at my wife, b* tch was used, a few f*cks were there! but when the big C was said, that's when trouble began. Fortunately, my wife is much more forgiving than me, she finished the round and told me that incident, while stronger in language, wasn't uncommon experience for her and her friends.

The other, my then 11 year old daughter, and I went to our local muni for an evening nine. At the time she played the U.S. Kids yardage of 1900 yards and scored low 40s to high 30s.. My daughter often teed up in the fairways, since her holes were shorter. . Knowing there were singles out, we always asked them
to join, or play through.

The pro in the clubhouse said to me, as we were preparing to play, "Girls are slow you have to let everyone play through." I informed him I was the slow one of the group and if he would please notify the group in front of us to allow us through, should we catch them. My daughter was bugged about being characterized as slow, just because she's a girl.

Yes, we males need to dial it down a few notches and understand the consequences of alienating the female market.

Three additional pieces of information:
1. I did not get into a fight. A very heated discussion took place on the tee box. An apology was demanded and begrudgingly given. My wife threatened me about getting into a fight. I love my wife, but she scares me more than anyone else, especially when she gives me "The Look".
2. The clubhouse was contacted. Someone from the pro shop met the group on the green. We didn't see the group for the rest of our round.
3. I chose to leave out the part of our third, my 70+ , hard of hearing! father. He was up the fairway from us and couldn't figure out what gad been said. He came up to the tee box when he saw me there. After we had left, and the situation had been explained to him, I had to restrain him from getting into a fight. A geriatric gangland style fight would be short, and entertaining, but I refer back to my first point.

I agree... Typically, I will turn the other cheek. But, when rude, fowl mouth males target women and or children, consequences be dammed.

There is clearly some geographical social aspects to this problem. In the east, I found that some men really didn't want women on "their" courses and could be vocal about it. The clubs were pretty blatant in the way they were set up to be male friendly and female unfriendly. In one club the main bar area was essentially part of the the men's locker room. I never understood that attitude. In Reno, it was quite diferent and the club that I belonged to had a stronger woman's organization than the mens. Lots of women played (along with kids too) and no male ever expressed anything that could be construed as not wanting women around that I ever heard. The head pro was I think ultimately responsible for the clubs good atitude towards women.

If men want women to play this game, it is up to us to make sure that they are made to feel welcome and have courses that are fun for them to play too.

The big 3 reasons often cited are; it's a difficult game, it's time consuming, and it can be expensive.
Going to a par 3 pitch and putt course helps to solve most issues. Honestly, this isn't being mentioned enough. Most women will be intimidated being on a full course until they have developed their Driver and fairway woods. Even then most would have allot more fun at a par 3 course.

I don't think sex is a factor. I've played with some horrendous male golfers this summer, and almost all of them could use some time at a pitch and putt. I played with a young guy a few weeks back that averaged 3 shots to get to my ball in the fairway, and I only average 230 off the tee.
