I'm liking the look of this top 9 at the moment. GMac and Westwood have work to do to join them.
A lot of matchplay experience in that group. And between now and the end of the year I just can't imagine that list changing by much if any. Unless someone from the Euro Tour pulls out a win in a Major I can't imagine anyone really falling out of this list. Westwood and GMac will be the two obvious Captains picks as well
Got to love the Poulter/Rose and Donald/Garcia pairings for the fourballs/foursomes, they are money! Garcia and Donald have won all but one match!

I like having this kind of discussion right now. The Ryder Cup is a BIG DEAL to golf fans. I can tell you who I don't want to see. Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Zach Johnson, Webb Simpson and at this juncture Keegan and that hurts to say because I love Keegan. If any of these guys earn their way on to the team, great they deserve to be there. But I've seen it too many times they where they've been into a position to win and just choke the tournament away. That's what happened in 2012. I know there's a lot of golf left but I'd like to see Snedeker, Billy Horschel and I'm going to get killed for this... Kevin Na. He would just drive the other guys crazy. Heck, put him and another slower player against the likes of Poulter. That'll slow that momentum down in a hurry! :)

I am with you buddy, it's never too early to talk about the Ryder Cup for me. I think it is one of the greatest sporting events in the world right up with the Superbowl.

I think your call on Kevin Na would be great. I am not sure what his track record in match play looks like, but that could be interesting. I would love to see a dominantly young team

I vaguely remember catching both Raymond Floyd, and Mr. Watsons comments at one of the press conferences they did specifically for the Ryder Cup and recall both of them saying about actively leading the team, no more of the "do what you want" "what makes you happy to play with who stuff", but almost taking it back a little bit and strategically coaching. If that is truly the model they are pursuing I could see younger players most definitely benefitting from something like that. Hrmmm After going to Medinah in '12 I would have loved to gone over to GlennEagles to see this one as well. Damn getting married taking all my golf trip money! haha.

After the last Ryder Cup, I honestly would have been happy if most of those players never played in another Ryder Cup again. Furyk choked his way on to that team (Losing both the US Open and WGC-Bridgestone in choking fashion) Striker choked his way from other tournaments throughout the year. If anything, those guys should have been the first two off that morning. You don't put Tiger last. His record is less than Stellar but you know if he was 4th or 5th out, he would have played to win. His match didn't even matter. Snedeker got totally trounced in his match. It just left a bad taste all around and you know for guys like Zach Johnson, Keegan, Webb Simpson, they need to skip a Ryder Cup because this last one is probably still haunting them. So get the fresh hungry blood in there to pull this out. Rickie comes to mind. I like Horschel but only if he proves he belongs on the team which at this point, he doesn't. Spieth will be awesome. Need DJ to get his head outta his rear and start playing like he did earlier this year. Man, I'm getting fired up talking about it and we aren't even through the Player's yet!

I think it would be a mistake to leave Fowler off the team if he is even close to making it on his own merit. He did very well in the Matchplay and he played well in his other team matchplay events he was a part of.

Me too, I agree with that but I'd also like to see Mahan. Again, only if he's playing well. I mean no wins last year but he contended at both the US and British Open, and really hasn't done a thing since withdrawing from the Canadian open.

I agree I thought Mahan got snubbed a bit in 2012 and I think that hurt him espcially after 'duff gate' from the 2010 Ryder Cup, he's a class player and I think he would have easily contributed more than Fuyrk Stricker or Tiger did.

Still as a Euro I'm happy for the US captain to make bad picks

Watson should build a team of people who want to win badly rather than big names. For the people interested in US tv rating, they will shrink anyway if US is down after a couple of days imho
I think you're right, people like Jim Fuyrk and Steve Stricker didn't seem to have enough desire and Tiger doesn't seem to get as fired up as the other guys... seems like he prefers the Presidents Cup

They're all great players just not necessarily in the Ryder Cup, time to try something new and let the young guys get some experience.

Yup, go with Horschel, the Johnsons, 20yojordan Spieth, Mahan, Honey Badger, Keegan, Fowler... finish with the top 5 Reed, and you will have a good chance to win!

Edit: also because Europe doesn't look very good right now...

I am not sold on Mahan at this point. He isn't playing well and hasn't really done anything in two years. If he gets hot then sure, but I will take anyone who gets hot going into the Ryder Cup. If Reed ends up on the team I would be surprised. He seems to have talked himself right into the slump that we all could have predicted was coming

I liked what Reed had to say but you have to know you're putting yourself in that position by whatever you say. Is it possible that if he is more modest and doesn't say much but thank friends and family and the process, that he could still be riding the hot streak? Sure it is. But maybe he also thought he was ready because after that he started playing in groups with the likes of McIlroy and Fowler, guys who have big crowds following them. I do like him, except the whole Callaway thing :) I also saw that he swtich putters this past week, he was using a Versa this weekend. As for Mahan, I agree with you. I only want him on the team if he gets hot. But did you see how much baby weight he put on? Seems like his golf has been lowered a little on the priority list.

I think with Reed he just served himself a big piece of humble pie. I think that might be good for him in the long run having so much success and then getting brought back down to reality with some less than stellar play.

Lets not make this thread ANOTHER Tiger Woods thread. Like said in my OP, we are talking hypothetically if the Ryder were now, and Tiger is out. End of story. Start another thread about whether or not Tiger should be a captain pick in the fall if he doesn't qualify.

Sorry. I am just confused how any competent human being could justify taking Rickie Fowler over Tiger Woods in the Ryder Cup? Please just try to pretend to hide your bias against Woods. It will make the trolling more fun for you!

Based on my personal opinion comparing Fowler and Woods at the Ryder Cup. We have different opinions, that's perfectly fine . We will see what will happen at Gleneagles ;)

I am to old to use smiley faces. And you continuing to wink at me every post is becoming disturbing. I merely wanted to point out the fact that I am confused how Rickie fowler who earned a half of a point in his singles match could be seen as being more valuable to the team as a healthy Tiger Woods? Still waiting for a rational answer to my question. Something tells me that the European team would rather fowler got picked over Tiger Woods. But please. Explain...

Well, you are the only one who refuses to understand my opinion, no problem with that ;);)

Whilst Tiger Woods is the world no. 1 his performance at the last Ryder Cup was poor at best and he was healthy and in form at the time and only managed to deliver half a point for the week.

If he qualifies then fine but if not I'm not sure he should get a captain's pick over the young enthusiastic guys who really want to win

I think a lot of it is that if Tom doesn't pick Tiger and US don't win the Ryder Cup then he will get criticised for not picking him, whatever he decides will be the wrong decision if they don't win! Lose lose situation.

Tiger will be good for the US team, at worst he'll ensure that they get "favourable" drops.

He is clearly not a team player and his Ryder Cup record is pretty average if I'm being generous. Some players gel well in a team, some shirk it and some plainly don't fit into teams.

I'd love to see another shankasaurus from Mahan. That was cool.
