We used to do the three-putt snake. If you three putt you are holding the snake. You keep it until someone else three putts. Whoever has it at the end gets bit and has to pay everybody else. It was always fun when somebody had a 3 or 4 footer for a second putt and the rest of the group would hiss at them while they were reading the putt.

I like playing a game we call 9's

Played with a three ball group

Each hole is worth 9 points

Scoring as follows on each hole

5 points first place
3 points second place
1 point third

or if tied in first

4 points for both players tied in first
Second place player gets 1 point

or if tied in second

first place player gets 5 points
remaining two players tied for second both get 2 points

I started playing "Wolf" or "Lone Wolf" last year with a group. Usually bet $.25-$1 per point. 4th place has to pay the point difference to 3rd place, 2nd place, and 1st place players. 3rd place has to pay point difference to 2nd place and 1st place players. 2nd place has to pay point difference to 1st place player.

That one is my favorite game. But you sure don't want to be off your game or you can be digging deep into the wallet.

9s and Wolf are both games I'm familiar with and both a lot of fun. You can also do 9s with 4 people, but I think the total is 13 points and the winner gets 7. I'm pretty sure that's right anyway.

Wolf is great though as it's a team game, but the teams change virtually every hole.

With four people maybe 16 points ....7,5,3,1?

That's what I like about wolf, teams change every time. So much luck in the order you draw, want the best player right after you. I hate it when they are the last guy you can choose.

We've lately been playing 9-point (3 players), 16-point (4 players), and 25-point (5 players). We also throw in some cool twists.

So here's the basic format:

Each hole is played and then the "points" are divvied up at the end of each hole:

In 9-point, the values are 5, 3, 1. In 25 point, the values are 9, 7, 5, 3, 1. in 16-point, the points would be: 7, 5, 3, 1. So in 16-point, all points must add up to 16 points at the end of the hole. For instance, if the the players made the following scores, then the point values would be:

Player 1: 4 (this player would get 7 points)
Player 2: 5 (this player would get 5 points)
Player 3: 6 (this player would get 2 points)
Player 4: 6 (this player would get 2 points)

The total points add up to 16 each hole.

Our "wrinkles":

We play that if any player wins a hole by 2 strokes (say he eagles and everyone else makes par or higher, then that player wins all 16 points on that hole). In addition, we play that any player who loses a hole outright (he has the highest, un-tied score), he may double or triple the point value on the next hole only.

We typically play a dollar a point, but sometimes we play two dollars a point, and that can get nasty when there are lots of double or triple holes.

It's a game where almost every putt means something money-wise. It's definitely not for the faint of heart (or wallet!)

Vegas can be fun in a 4ball, especially if the guys can make a few birdies.
Teams of two if team A make 4,4 on a par 4 there total is 44 if team B makes 4,5 they get 45, so team A would win by 1 point, we usually play a buck a point
Again on a par 4 Team A goes 3,4 and B goes 4,5 it would be 34 to 54 as birdies flip
Finally we play that eagles flip and double the opponents score

We used to play wolf but it got slow because the first driver had to be ready, and then everyone had to hit in order. For 4 and 5 player groups we play a game where the two guys furthest left of the tee box are a team. So it changes each hole. The we play high/ low like any regular match.

If there are 5, then the team with three (on the right) throws out the high score so it is still 2 v 2.

That's true, it can get slow because of having to maintain the same order. If someone isn't ready when it's their turn it does delay things.

We usually end up playing it with five people and somehow I'm usually the scorekeeper. I'm usually busy trying to make sure the numbers match up after each hole and if I'm up early in the rotation it seems like a lot of times I'm so rushed that I end up,hitting a poor shot.

Vegas is actually a great game to play on a difficult course with good players. At my home course, anyone can make a double or triple bogey on pretty much any hole on the course, and when one team makes a 2 and a 3 on a par 3, and the other team makes a 3 and an 8 (like we had happen a few weeks ago), that can get costly when you are playing for a dollar a point!

23 vs. 83 is $60 on just one hole! Yikes!

Expand this into a agame called Animals, not only is there a "snake" there is

Hit into the water = Frog
Hit a tree = Gorilla
hit into a bunker = Camel

same rules, just more blood. This can be played on the side with other formats pretty easily. For example, one could lose in a Nassau, but win some animals and not be hurt that badly

a couple of outdated hybrids
shovel-ier shovels
wedges from same shovel company
some putter with a dead insert and

Left Right Daytona or Left Right Chicago are also good ones, where the partners switch up..

Everyone tees off. The two on the left are partners for the hole and the two on the right are partners for the hole. Then play it out under whichever rules you wish. Marks dots for low single, low team, and one extra for a birdie. Dots pay a set amount.

Next hole everything resets

Obviously please remember to keep pace

That's why they call it Vegas! We play Vegas and Wolf on the regular.

Sometimes we will throw in a cart match where we go drivers vs riders, cart vs cart, and then opposites. That is fun because everyone gets to play on a team.

We play a game called "37".

Everyone in the group starts with 37. You subtract your handicap from that number (i.e. I'm a 2 so I'd start with 35 points and my buddy who's a 12 would start with 25 points). This effectively takes giving strokes on certain holes a mute point as it's all taken care of up front.

You start playing the round and when you get a bogey, you subtract one point. A par is worth two points, a birdie worth three and an eagle worth four points. The object is to get as close to zero points when you're finished.

We play $1 a point. If I finish the round with one point and my partner finishes with 5, then he'd pay me $4. Play it a couple times and you'll see that it's one of the fairest games out there.

SNEAKY: A Nassua and Points game
Nasty is the $5 Nassua
Points (as a team) on all holes:
$3 Eagle
$2 low individual
$2 low team
$2 proxy
$2 Birdie (gross)
$2 take (you lost the last hole)
$1 Polie
$1 Greenie
$1 Keep (you won the last hole)
$1 Sandie
$1 Sneakie (par with out GIR)
Any hole can be bridged on the tee to double or triple points

And the Cherry is the $5 snake for each 9. You could imagine what the scorecard looks like...

I'm sure there's a name for this, but we call it mini tourney. Break each round up into 3 holes. Winner of the 3 holes gets a predetermined amount (usually $5 for us, $10 on 16,17,18). We score it by strokes but I'm sure match play would work as well.

I like it because if you had a bad hole or two, you can almost shrug it off and be in contention on the next set of holes.

Another game is Bogey (or double bogey). First player to get a bogey (or double) is on the hook and pays each player the number of holes until they themselves bogey. So if player A bogeys #1, player B bogeys #5 and player C bogeys #6, A would owe B 4 units and would owe C 5 units. Then everything is reset starting on #7. It's better when the players are close in ability. Apparently Trevino played this a lot
