Yeah, play it forward. Uh huh. Tell me more, Hack Golf.

Sitting on a bench watching the guys in the group ahead of me the off from the tips on the par three seventh, a 181 yard (back pin) hole. It's 160 to the front edge. 150 to clear the lake. Two club headwind.

One hit a hybrid, two hit woods and one a driver. Two hit swimmers, none are on the green.

Yep. What golf needs is fifteen inch holes. Yep. That'll get more people playing.

The "bench" version of "walking the line".

Why do people care so much about what others are
doing if they're not hurting anyone or causing a
problem.
Since he's sitting on a bench waiting for them, I'd consider that "causing a problem" in that the course is backing up.

More than likely true. However, I have played behind 20 handicaps that were faster than some 2 handicaps. Obviously, the opposite is also true. My point is that slow golf is not always in direct relation to one's handicap. No argument however that teeing it forward would speed play.

To be fair, getting more to play isn't the issue here. 15 inch cups aren't fixing the "problen" you're describing. Would it be much better if you were sitting on the bench and they all knocked it to 6 feet?

Not it all 4 paced off their putts, marked, remarked, plumb bobbed, took 4 practice strokes, lipped out, repeat

Maybe the green just cleared. Maybe he's a single that
caught a foursome. He didn't say in the opening post.
He just said he was sitting on the bench.

Life's too short to worry about the guys in front of you are doing. Just play.

Not true if the guys in front of you are slowing down the whole course. People play too slow and have a heightened sense of entitlement because "they paid their money and they will do what they want."

Sure, I agree, but it sounds like the entire course is slow otherwise they would have let the bench sitters pass so what would be the use in letting them pass to only be held up again by the group in front. Happens all the time. Would you rather be sitting on a couch or a bench enjoying the fresh air on a golf course with some live golf (hack gold) right infront of your eyes? :)

Since life is short, some people don't want to be held up for 7 hours on the course due to people playing from the wrong tees.
7 hours? Time to a call a marshall or simply ask to pass. What's wrong with asking to pass them? Don't be scared. I'm pretty sure the gentlemen would say "sure, by all means!"

I'm not worried. Just good natured mocking while I sit here on the 9th hole bench *waiting* to play.

Holes 11 & 12 appear wide open. So I'll sit here with my Fat Tire and enjoy the show.

Sadly the hold up is three and five groups ahead of us--one group 2 holes behind, one at least one behind.

I had time for a little walk while waiting to tee off on ten.

If having to hit driver on a 180 yard par three isn't an example of playing the wrong tees, then I don't know what is.

The problem is that unless I am just dead on, my tempo gets wrecked and carnage ensues in my game.

I just finally lost it. Walked off after the 13th. It just gets to the point where going home and working on drywall or mowing the lawn or almost anything sounds better than sitting 5-10 minutes between shots.

Yep. It's the technology restrictions and obscure rules that are driving people from the game. Yep, that's it.

I mean, I love this sometimes-infuriating game FFS and I walked off.

*sigh*

Often times I've found, the guys playing the wrong tees and not letting people pass just don't know any better. They are the ones learning to play. They hear Ladies, seniors, mens, tips....well mens it is. Or play tips because everyone else seems to be. If you are too afraid to ask to pass, you can't be mad at them, they don't know any better.

Point being. This falls on the marshall. The problem with that is, at least in VA and TN. The only course that have a marshall driving around are the expensive course where experienced golfers play. Muni's cannot afford, or choose not the have someone driving around monitoring play. Dying from a slow leak...bigger cups, shorter tees, fewer rules won't fix that. That will just lower people's scores...marginally.

this 1000%. I am a high handicapper but I play 18 in 2 hours if I'm alone and 2.5 with my buddy when we walk it. Maybe it's a character flaw, but if I hit a bad shot or two, and then have to wait. Or vice versa, a good shot or two, and then have to wait it totally throws me off. Thus I joined a private course and very rarely encounter this, and when I do I skip holes or play through because I'm not losing out by not playing 9 or 18 without a greens fee.

Heh. I'm not sure that's on the agenda for two reasons.

1) Cost. Five to six figure initiation and three figures per month that can get close to four figures with food and beverage minimums.
2) I like to play different courses. I guess if I joined a club with reciprocal play it would be less of an issue.

Who does Augusta have reciprocal play with?

That doesn't sound like much fun. I like to play quickly, but not that quickly. When I'm out on the course I like to enjoy myself as well. I'm not in a rush to get finished. :-)

If the course is empty, which happens sometimes, and I'm playing by myself, I will actually slow everything down...just to simply enjoy being there. Why rush to get back to all the hurly-burly BS?

There are multiple issues that cause slow play and one of them is playing from the correct set of tees. The problem is it is a voluntary decision and cannot be enforced. However, I support the current "play it forward" initiative because some golfers will try it and find that they enjoy the game more. I know I do not belong on the tips and have no problem playing from the men's tees if the rest of the group wants to play from the tips.
