Relax everybody. I think what Starzel is trying to point out is that high cappers have MUCH more variance in their distances than pros. Consider:

For a 5i, Bob hits

1) Center face contact: 180yds, 10%
2) Off center contact: 170yds, 20%
3) Slight chunk/thin: 50 - 150yds, 40%
4) Big chunk/thin: 1 - 100yds, 30%

This is a lot of dispersion in distance. If I had a 140yd shot, I would not play a 5i counting on just the right miss.
that's not a high capper, that's an absolute beginner. And I thought the new clubs were supposed to only lose a yard or two with off center hits?

That is a troubling sign for this forum if true.

I'm new here, but so far I've seen Hot Rod accusing others of being a high handicapper if they disagree with him. Then you have medic passive-agressively trying to call someone a woman if they disagree with him.

Both of those actions show a very poor attitude and are not representative of a classy person.

So only absolute beginners chunk the ball? I find that hard to believe as when I play with higher handicaps it tends to be quite common.

Of course not, duh, but only beginners chunk it 30+ yards short 70% of the time, let's get a grip here. This is a 22+ cap we're talking about, and to keep some context here, you wouldn't see this in a pro am.

Problem is, people aren't honest with their game nor are they secure with themselves. Most people will have more fun if they play tees suited to their game, but they believe if they play the "white tees" they'll look like a beginner.

At my home course I'll play from the tips (appx 6950 yards), I walk w/ a clicgear and if the course is empty I'm done in about 2.5 hours. I originally was playing from 6500, but was hitting over all of the trouble (fairway bunkers, trees, etc.) which was fun, but its more fun for me to play where I have to pick and choose spots more carefully.

To each their own I guess. A lot of shorter hitters I've played with have said it only took one time teeing it forward to realize that it makes the game so much more fun for them.

I think if Golf Channel keeps pushing the Tee It Forward campaign all the time, it will make a drastic change.

Play private courses....

Shouldn't be an issue to get a membership, i've read 17 threads here lately saying golf if all but dead in the US. You should be able to get a great deal
this 1000%. I am a high handicapper but I play 18 in 2 hours if I'm alone and 2.5 with my buddy when we walk it. Maybe it's a character flaw, but if I hit a bad shot or two, and then have to wait. Or vice versa, a good shot or two, and then have to wait it totally throws me off. Thus I joined a private course and very rarely encounter this, and when I do I skip holes or play through because I'm not losing out by not playing 9 or 18 without a greens fee.
I walk 90% of my rounds and I have to call shenanigans on walking 18 alone in two hours or 2.5 hours for a twosome.
I work 9-5. 3 times this week, I left work at 5, got to a golf course 5 min later, 10-15 min change and hit 20 balls. I tee off around 5:25, usually finishing about 7:30, depending how quick it takes the 3-4 somes in front of me to realize they should let me play through. 18 holes, par 70, 6300. I'd imagine par 72 would take me few minutes more. Walking with my clickgear. :)

We have a foursome that is our first standing tee time of the day, and they walk a foursome in 3 hours every time out. I imagine 2 would cut time off of that. We are a par 72, roughly 6600 very hilly yards with very thick rough. Oh, and all are well over 60.

One thing I don't think anyone has mentioned. And another reason why "Play It Forward" is a dismal failure.

Because it isn't "policed" in any way, shape, or form.

Imagine if the starter or a marshal were also empowered to instruct players to move forward if they see players hitting it 150 with their driver from the tips on a 7000 yarder. But as it stands the whole thing is voluntary. Those inclined to play forward probably already were. Those slowing play down have not moved forward and are still slowing things down.

How did this become another how fast can you walk 18 holes thread?
tahts what it boils down to every single thread where any sort of slow play/wrong tees/hackers are mentioned.

Only single cappers who can play a full round in 3hrs or less should even be allowed out on the course right? Who cares about everyone else!

My teacher of 36 years, was of the belief that one should play the white tees until they could break 80 eighty percent of the time and then they could step back to the BLUES and when they could break 75 ninety percent of the time, then they could step back to the tips.

He felt that these scores should be acquired playin it down in either money games or tournament play and not sh*ts & giggles rounds with buddies.

He also did not feel that the distance that one hit their tee ball or any club should be a parameter for the tees that they play as there is no box for yardage on the card. And for those of you who cry that if you didn't move back, your round would consist of nothing more than drivers and wedges, and as the object of the game still hasn't changed just for for you, you should have no problem breaking 80 the vast majority of the time since you get so much practice hitting your wedge and scoring irons, LMAO.

As has been stated before me, all it takes is diligent, consistent enforcement from the course/rangers. And regarding this veiled threat that to do so would cost the game players, #1, I don't buy it, and #2, who gives a sh*t, as there are wayyyy too many *ssholes on the courses as it is, and appropriate behavior, etiquette and civilized conduct has taken a back seat for fear of losing players, LMAO.

I've played this game for 46+ years and most of you can quess what it means to me though I would rather see it die(it won't, LMAO) than have it's heritage, protocols & traditions held hostage by a bunch of clowns, who both play the game and think up moronic ways, ie., 15" holes, "foot golf," to make it "more fun and speed it up," along with the idiots who say, "I paid my greens fees and I'll play whatever tees I'd like."

No problem, just so you keep playing the dump that would tolerate that type of attitude and behavior and not the course that I'm playing.

Have a great week Gents/Gals :)

Fairways & Greens My Friends,
Richard

The problem is a lack of marshaling and accountability. Period.
If you've ever had the priviledge of playing in Scotland, specifically the Old Course, it's amazing that a group of 4 marginal golfers, their spouses, caddies, and many more photos taken in 4 hours.

It's golf carts
It's ego
It's failure to enforce or know simple etiquette.
In other words, it's golf as we know it today........It bugs me as much as anyone, but it is what it is and unless i'm completely wrong, it isn't going to change. I've been living with it for a whole lot of years and i'm still standing. Comparing golf on the Old Course to golf in america on the average course is like comparing polo and Ice hockey...They are not the same and never will be the same.
It's still remarkable that it can be done in under 4 hours.

Simple cart etiquette is also lacking. Drop off a player at his ball and drive to yours. Don't wait for your cart partner to hit and THEN drive to the next ball. That chaps me more than anything.

I was a ranger on a course that dropped its average tee time by over an hour while I was there (I am not taking credit for this, it was all the pro) - what I found with regards to slow play was it that it was rarely the tee box selected that determined how quickly a round was being played. Slow rounds happen for a lot of reasons but it usually boils down to the player(s) and the innumerable clueless ways one can wander around a golf course. A slow player is going to be a slow player regardless of the tee box he selects.

I think individual slow play is largely an issue of a lack of awareness. Some people don't consider that they're on the course with others, or don't care, and thus don't consciously look for ways to facilitate a faster round. When I was finally invited to play with my dad and his guys, I was shooting in the 110's. But I made sure to keep up. I played ready golf, I read putts while others were putting, I would carry multiple clubs (including my putter) to my ball when I was dropped off so that I could go straight to the green, and I picked up when I was out of a hole. More strokes do mean a little longer round, but a little self-awareness can keep that from unduly lengthening a round.

That said, if you cram a bunch of tee times too close together, I don't care what else happens, there are going to be backups. Schedule less tee times, and spread them out better. But that would mean less players, and less money coming in, so that ain't happening...
