Got new wedges

Somewhat confused?
I have played a 52.08 & 58.08 Vokey Raws exclusively for about 3 years. As I play often they finally had to be retired. After some thought I decided to give the Mizuno MP-T a run, went with 53.08 and 58.10. After about 7 rounds with them I have to say I have noticed some dramatic differences.

I probably lost about 7-12 yards with each wedge on full shots, used to hit 58 about 95 and 52 about 115. New wedges 53 105-110, 58 about 85-90. Part of whis is because I spin the s**t out of the new ones. I hope this is just because they are so new.

I do prefer the weight of the new wedges as they feel a bit heavier, and the forgings have a nice soft feel to match the rest of my irons.

I am just curious if anyone else notices differences like this in wedges from different OEM's. Just looking for some feedback from you guys on why you think I may have lost the distance. Thanks in advance.

I live in Indiana, but played the rounds in North & South Carolina, temps about 50 - 70. I suppose it is a little chili, but it was the spin that just shocked me more than anything else. Thanks and looking forward to more feedback.

Hmmm... sounds like a vacation, so maybe your swing was not mid-season form. Wouldn't hurt to have the lofts and lies verified on them. The spin may be greater too since the grooves are new and may cause them to come up a little short. I have various wedges, and have not found the Mizunos to be any shorter/longer than others really. I've had the lofts verified on all of them though, so that is likely why.

Right now in indy it is pretty cold, except for the few nice days we had. I think distance could be off around maybe 5-10 yards at most... probably around 5 on wedges. Unless your vokeys were stronger then the stated loft, or your mizzys are weaker then the stated loft. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to have them checked.

It is a possibility that lofts are off, have not have them checked yet. Thanks for the suggestion I will do that. As far as mid-season form, everything else was going normal distance, so I felt it just may have been the wedges. Thanks guys.

I have just found something similar.... I got a new sonartec t35 52 degree to replace my Cleveland CG10 52 degree.

The Sonartec is about 5 metres shorter and the trajectory is higher. I assume it is to do with different weight distribution, slightly different length, that all effects the shaft so of course it will fly different.

It means I can learn a few new shots... !!

Do It like it? .... I love it.

could be the shafts. your 52* was probably a s300 and your 58* a s200. the mizuno website just says dg wedge flex - which is pretty generic. also, the spin probably isn't helping either. is the launch higher?

I have the same Mizunos MP-Ts but Titleist 58 SM. I haven't noticed a distance issue but my setup of the Mizunos and Titleist are different (shaft type and length).

One thing is that the standard Mizuno 53 is 1/4'' shorter and than than Titleist 52. That and the 1 degree loft accounts for some yards.

Not sure about the 58s thought? Mizuno's stock 58 is 1/4" longer than Titleist.

Could be extra spin. Is the Mizuno trajectory also higher?

I play a lot and after 3 years my wedge groves would be worn to nothing and not spinning at all.

I did wonder about the shaft flex as well. I thought Titleist used S300 in wedges, to me the Mizunos feel more like an S400. Trajectory is a shade higher. Thanks for all the feedback so far, serious food for thought. This is why I love this sight.

Could be the design too. I had a very old ... blunt groove Mizuno wedge that still spins a ton...

CG is probably slightly different so the wedge reacts slightly differently to the swing. My mizuno have 1/2 inch longer hosel than titleist.

I say, just play lean your weight more towards the target when you swing to play a slightly lower trajectory?

A lot of factors that could come into play:

• 1º loft difference accounts for about 2-3 yards distance loss

• Any temperature below 70º will cause distance loss (another 2-5 yards)

• Higher/less penetrating ball flight (depending on severity...1-3 yards)

So right there is 5-11 yards which is similar to what you are experiencing. My only suggestion is to get the loft bent 1º stong so it will be the same as your Vokey, also hit a large bucket or two of range balls out of a bunker to dull the grooves a little bit. Anytime I get new wedges I will spend alot time in the practive bunker just to dull the grooves a little bit. JAT
