Monte's No-Turn > Cast Drill...

Recommended Posts

This is THE most simple and elegant explanation I've ever encountered for communicating the feel of a proper takeaway and release. I cannot express enough gratitude for this insight as it's completely transformed my mindset on the course. So nice to be visualizing a shot instead of trying to remember 35 things while standing behind/over the ball.

Also, when things DO fall apart a little (inevitable for most of us), it's a VERY simple move to execute ahead of pre-shot to get you back where you belong. I shot an 80 today, with a couple of 3 putts. It's been a long and frustrating season up until I stumbled across this.

THANK YOU Monte! I'm sure you hear it plenty, here and elsewhere, but your common sense, simple approach has made a significant impact in the one hobby I truly love. We are very fortunate to have your opinions and insight available to us.

If you're ever in Minneapolis with some free time, dinner and drinks are on me!!

I've been working on this one as well. Right now, its my one swing thought. It's a good simple thing to think about and it syncs up the downswing nicely.

The pivot will stall if the arms are trailing.

This drill keeps the arms from going past the turn in the downswing and makes sure the arms don't trial to start the downswing. It is pretty difficult to flip on purpose unless you stall the pivot on purpose. In an attempt to flip on purpose, you speed up the trail arm and in turn, speed up the pivot, which in turn, keeps you from flipping,

The golf swing is mostly counterintuitive. People who consciously hold lag often get their arms to trail, stall the turn and flip.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

wow, how soon we forget.....Monte's explanation and drill is so simple and so efficient. I recall now that some time back I had read this and it worked wonders for me and I believe had a lot to do with my breaking 80. It trumped all other feels and tips I had tried. how did I get away from it? For me, I think what happens is, that when I find something that works well and is so easy to do that I try to get "more" out of it and gradually it morphs into something else. Keep it simple has always been the best advice.

Thanks Monte.

edit: I went ahead and made a quick video of my interpretation of the drill in slow motion

I agree. Thanks for reposting this. I went to range yesterday with a list of feels to try, and thankfully this one was first on the list. Hit the whole jumbo bucket with just this simple thought. And it was amazing! I like it for 2 reasons:

1) It works.
2) It allows me to swing as small or big as I want. As long as I commit to throwing away the lag, I can pitch 40 yards or bomb a drive.

Thanks Monty!

How does this make sense?? If I try to cast or flip my hands, aren't I stalling my turn? How does this promote connection to the body??
For me I find that for pretty much everything in golf my first thought to make a correction is the exact opposite of what I should do. So much so, that I have begun to apply it (by doing the opposite of what I think I should do) when an issue arises on the course with way better results than using my first thoughts. Also, I've used the drill for many a practice swing to ensure I'm connected when my swing gets lose - it does work.

The drill has been my entire swing trigger at times.

I haven't hit the ball as solid as I hit it last night a the range in over a year. Thanks for the video. Now for me its carrying this over to the course, I have a problem with not overthinking and overcomplicating things on the course
I am the SAME WAY. When something goes wrong, I immediately go into analysis mode, typically chose the wrong solution, and then the cycle continues until I'm looking down at the golf club at address like it's some strange form of tool left behind by aliens.

What I can tell you is that if you make the commitment to only think of setting your wrists and casting the hell out of it, it works. When you add this to the "butterfly concept" Monte also talks about, the rest of it seems to just snap into place. Tempo, posture, alignment... All of it (for me anyway)

Most importantly though, it's so simple, you can place more emphasis on visualizing the ball flight to target (which is what I think we should all be more concerned with while playing). First time out using this concept, I shot my lowest score of the season. But it wasn't the score, it was the quality of the shots. This worked on EVERY type of swing I made.

Odd & Interesting: I saw the most improvement on opposite ends of the spectrum: Off the tee (missed only 3 fairways) and out of the sand (back to back sand saves, where I'm typically happy to be out and on the green at the same time).

Can you point me to a thread about this "butterfly" concept?

My goal is to make that commitment: to stop overthinking as I swing and keep it simple, set my wrists, cast the club

I enjoy everything Monte does for this site but I am totally missing the point on this.

I don't make a very good shoulder turn in my back swing. I am trying to improve on this.

I have watched the video a few times and I can say for sure if I was at the driving range with Monte and he said to to c0ck wrists and make no turn I could do it. My hands would move off the ball quickly and end up near my right ear, no shoulder turn.

Not critisizing Monte's idea, I just dont get how making NO shoulder turn will get me to make a shoulder turn.

Same thing with casting. I cast the club head with an agressive move from the begining of my down swing. I have used the Orange whip and few other drills to make a more gradual accelleration from the top in an attempt to get lag. But if I went to the range and Monte said make a cast on purpose. I could do my usuall rip from the top swing with no lag and all cast.

What am I missing?

That not every drill and feel is good for everyone. That's why I have over 100.

This drill is for people who have arm over run or over rotate. Also for those that get their arms trailing in downswing.

One thing that I've got from Monte's instruction is that there are many tips, feels, etc that apply to different individuals. Although I have never met Monte, I get the impression that he is very adept at finding the right "connection" with each student on an individual basis and has the answers to most problems. There is no perfect way to swing a golf club, and besides, who gets to say what is "perfect"? What works for me, might not work for you. Does that mean I agree with him 100% of the time? Probably not, but I can't cite any examples either. The only thing I might question about this particular drill is how it would relate to those "long" drivers, but it is moot for my swing as I am not interested in that aspect of the game and have no desire to compete in any of those sorts of contests. As mentioned in the video, it may feel as though you are throwing away your lag, but in essence, you are really speeding up (in sync) to catch up with the rest of the body and in so doing creating a lot of club head speed by the whipping action it produces. Other instructors focus on the same thing, but explain it a little differently. A teaching pro I know out of Las Vegas advocates a powerless arms, lower body driven swing, but with a lot of loose wrist action to achieve the same result. The beauty of this drill is in its simplicity. You don't have to think about anything else and if performed as intended, will take care of most other problems automatically. OTOH, having a good posture and grip goes a long way also.

when I did my video interpretation of this drill on you tube, (currently on my "continuation" drill of the videos sub forum); quite a few of Monte's drill appeared on the video screen that follows after mine played. Several are right in there with this particular drill and therefore handy to get to. The three that are closest in content are:
1. No turn-cast drill
2. Why the 90* set is beneficial
3. Perfect back swing

There are others of course, but I like to take these in digestible doses. (I also subscribe to his channel).

What a really wonderful resource.

I had seen this drill quite a while ago and if it worked would address 2 big issues for me. Throwing away lag and arm over run.

Watching it I'm thinking "that's nuts!!! I'm far too coordinated to not be able to do exactly what I'm trying to do. If I try to throw lag away from the top that's what will happen and I will either blade, top or chunk the ball to death."

At the range last night I had hacked my way through about 55 of 70 balls. Actually hitting better than usual. I remembered this video and thought it would be fun to prove myself right. Oops.

The first practice swing trying to throw lag away from the top I could feel more lag than I ever did when I tried to increase lag.

Sure I hit some pretty ugly shots, but it was not due to lack of lag!!! The ones I actually got on the club face were half height piercing rockets (as opposed to my usual towering 7 iron).

Just sayin'.

Generally...

When you hold lag, your right arm slows down, loses connection to your turn and you lose lag.

When you attempt to throw it away, the right arm speeds up, the turn speeds up and it becomes impossible to throw away.

I've been working on this drill & it's been great w/ my wedges & even 8 & 9 iron. It's amazing. I was 120+ out on 2 different holes & flew the green w/ my gap wedge. I'll have to work on learning my new distances. The ball just explodes off the face, but crisp. It's working great. But I'm really struggling w/ the longer irons. Some thin, some fat. I know its a timing issue, but I was curious if you recommended this concept for every club in the bag & if so, do you feel it just takes a little longer to get this down w/ longer sticks?
