Mizuno MP 650 driver......revisited

Jaywh2

Recommended Posts

I've had three of these drivers in the past with various shafts. I've had both 913s, both Berthas, J40, G/I-25s etc.

While I love the new BB and shaft combos I have, don't find them any better than the 650. Just curious if anyone went back to or still plays the 650 driver. Best looking and feeling out there if you like the muted feel. My opinion.

Anyone still gaming or had similar experience ?

It's funny you started this thread. I played the MP 650 driver last year but went back to my 913 d3. I felt that I started getting way more spin with the MP650 costing me yards. Now keep in mind, it was probably me or the different balls I was hitting but my self diagnosis of the problem lead me to sell the MP 650. Last month, I started to miss my MP. The feel, looks, weight, just everything. I went to BST and found another one for sale. Now here is the funny part. Last year, I bought my MP 650 from Spif. We struck up a friendship and at the time, he told me he might be moving to Costa Rica. This time, I bought from Spif again. As of now, he is living somewhat close to me and we will be planning a golf weekend soon.

So I don't know who is the bigger golf ho, me buying the same driver from the same person or Spif selling the same driver to the same person. Either way, I am glad because this driver is an excellent driver that really gets no love.

I know the thread is about the driver but I'm having the same success with the 3W. I just can't seem to find anything that feels as good, as long, or as accurate. The stock Orochi has been a perfect match in the 3W.

I have been considering buying one for quite awhile.l just bought one on ebay last night, because of the terrible round that I had .......nothing but hooks. I know that it's my swing, but I need something that doesn't go left. For those that can compare it to the G25, ZLE, G20- How does it launch & spin? Thanks

Don't have one yet but definitely on my 'to do' list. I've always liked to game under hyped sleepers and the mp650 certainly fits the bill. I currently have a Wilson Smooth which is something I was waiting to tick off. I got the Smooth for $75 and it's a beauty. I really don't have the urge to change drivers so the only ones I will be temlted to buy are the older classics that I have been eyeing off for a while and I can get for a good price, like the mp650.

I've had a few rounds in with the mp650 & it is exactly what I was looking for. A straight to slight fade. The sound is fantastic (very muted-not tinny at all),the flight is perfect,& the shape is exactly what a driver should look like.

Agree. If you're a good ball striker this club is so solid. The ball flight is stellar. Get the right shaft and it's as long as all the current offerings with a simple classic look and unreal feel.

If you want to lose hooks, the TEE xcg6 in an open setting is worth looking at. Unlike other so called open faced drivers, this thing in the open setting is genuinely 2º open. It was set open when I demoed it and I was hiting everything left to right even though I'm a straight or draw hitter. I tried it on course in the Upright setting (square face), and was still leaking a few right. No hooks.

This is so funny. I sold an oban devotion to Spif almost 2 years ago and rather than ship it to Colorado we were flying out the next day or so to go snowboarding so I brought it in my snowboard travel case. Made arrangements to meet him on our way to Breckenridge from DIA but when we landed our bags were missing and no one had any clue where they were.

So I told Spif what happened and he was fine with it, the airline told us to go ahead on up to Breck and when they found our stuff they'd send it up with a courier to us.

Long story short they got our bags to us the next day and we made arrangements again to meet so Spif could get his Devotion. We met in the parking lot of the Golden Golfsmith and he cruises up in an A6 Quattro next to our rental Pontiac or whatever we had. I get out of the car as does he and when his dome light comes on I see a pistol laying on the passenger seat. He must have seen me staring at it because he laughed and said oh hey man no worries I always carry...no offense.

Great guy we must have spent 30 minutes chatting in the Golfsmith parking lot in mid January. My wife was like wouldn't it just have been easier to ship the stupid thing? Now what fun would that have been?

This driver is an anomaly. It keeps calling to me from the benched driver section of the garage. I have never had a driver that has made me want to hit it like this.

Well I answered the calls and have played it for two rounds. This thing is a beast. I really don't know why I keep trying other drivers. Between this driver and my Grenade, I should never want another.

Bringing up and old post here.... But I sold, and re purchased this driver with the stock orochi stiff. And it just PUMPS it out there. Probably the nicest shape to look down at too. I do like some kind of line up but no big deal. just a bomber.

I have used the 650 hybrid since it come out and I'll never get rid of it!

I've really been enjoying mine. Straight with a little fade. Sound, feel, and flight is all looking good.

No on course data yet ... I've already played about 20 rounds so far this year at the muni where the most I'll carry is a 3 iron or sometimes a 5 wood. Maybe this weekend I'll get in the car and go play a "real" round. I'm antsy to see how it works out in real life. It's great at the range of course. :)

Serendipity that this topic came up. I purchased a new driver and a used 3 wood based largely on the positive comments made on WRX. I took out both out for the first time last weekend.

I love them.

The driver is as sweet as any I've ever hit. Set up is perfect, sound and feel border on the sensual and results are absolutely first rate.

I'm hitting a 10.5 degree with the 75g S Orochi shaft . Trajectory is perfect and direction is mostly straight.

On some level a 'thank you' is in order for helping me choose a metal wood of such high quality.

I have the MP650 and jpx 850 driver. I have been loving the 850 until about a month ago. I started hitting huge draws and hooks. Every time I think I have it worked out, it comes back. I put my MP650 into play last week and was just hitting straight bombs. The feel is definitely better than the 850. Now I am wondering if I should just stay with the 650? Great driver

That's some 650 love. I've got 3 myself. One that I made into a Frankenclub (1 stick of glue from a hotmelt glue gun- not actual hotmelt) on an old Cobra NV, an 8.5* on a Cinnamon 65x and my gamer and true love- 9.5*/Cinnamon 75x. I've done things with this driver that make me smile when I think back. I'll be testing the 850 a bit this weekend and I have one on order with a tipped 6.3 Speeder X. From what I gather from a buddy who just got an 850, the spin is comparable on center shots vs. the 650. The 850 is a bit lower on misses and is super hot just above center due to the rebound crown featured on the EZ and 850. Can't wait to find out.

The 650 is absolutely timeless in it's look and feel. A lower spin head for sure that sits open. It's the modern day j33r/p.

I hit the ez driver on the range one time. I hit about 12 balls and the only reason I didn't buy it was because the 850 was coming out a week later. It was a good hitting driver for me.

I was doing a demo when the EZ came out. A guy had his 650 and wanted to hit the EZ head to head. The cool thing was we had the exact same shaft in both heads and I set the EZ up to match the 650. As close to apples to apples as you can get. The guy was blowing it by his 650. I really couldn't believe it. He had a more average swing speed and wonder if either the spin from the 650 was too low to keep in the air or the EZ gave him better launch/spin for his swing. Whatever. Either way, in his hands the EZ was the clear winner over the 650.

If MG lets me I'll see what the real deal is and put the EZ with a Phenom TX up against my 650/Cinnamon. There's a reason a recovering driver ho like me still has the 650.

Edit: Heck, by that time I'll have my 850 and we'll have a real throw-down ho-down! YEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAW!

I still have a full set:

driver, 3/5 fairways and 19/22 hybrids. I found another 9.5 with an Orochi 65x that I haven't hit yet because we only just lost our snow. Standby Vs Proto 60x in case that shaft doesn't work out.

Also have a 9.5 EZ with Phenom TX and (ding, ding) an Mp 630 with a Diamana whiteboard 73x. Gonna be a fun summer!

How's the EZ driver compare? Still love the look of that one from address and so cheap now.

No idea. Been a long winter. I picked it up used in the off season and installed a Phenom 60 tx in it, and it has been sitting in my backup back for about 5 months. Range near me just finally opened up, so hopefully I can get out this week and try everything.
