From Stiff to regular flex driver shaft ..

I have been fit for stiff shafts for years now in my driver, was playing with a guy the other day and he wanted to try my driver so we switched for a few holes, his was a regular flex and I hit it as straight and maybe a little farther than my own basically with no real noticeable difference except that I was able to swing easier and smoother...anyone make the switch to regular flex driver shafts for that reason?

I was fitted 3 years ago into a Ping K15 stiff. I always thought it was strange because my driver SS is in the low 90's. This week I played and my partner had a 913 D3 in regular flex. I asked to hit a few and my slice magically reappeared, brought back memories of my days trying to break 110 for 18 holes. I guess it just depends on the brand and type of shaft. Someones regular is someone else's stiff.

Comparing 'stiff' to 'regular' is a fools errand as there is no industry standard. Frankly, I'd be surprised if there is much standard between different lines offered by the same manufacturer.

That said, I fit squarely in the overlap of regular and stiff for most shaft recommendations that start based on swingspeed and have average swing length and moderate tempo. Some shafts work better for me in regular, some in stiff, and two weeks ago I hit a Slider TP fairway quite well that had a TP TS 8.3 in X-Stiff.

Try, and then buy, the individual shaft and don't sweat the flex designation.

Yes! That is a two great reasons. I conduct demo days frequently, and I often ask golfers what they normally swing..Most say "stiff"..then by end of the demo some are hitting regular and some even are playing SENIOR!

Playing too stiff of a club will only make the game harder.

If you leave the ball low right consistently and are not getting the distance you want, going down a flex is great move.

Check out this article, I wrote on this scenario.

I believe True Temper did a study several years ago, correct me if I am wrong, where some 80% of players are playing with shafts too stiff for them. I know I did read this but I can't recall clearly if it was TT or someone else who did the work to verify it. I've always been of the school of thought where you swing the softest shaft you can control. Then, you won't have to swing as hard and get more consistency

I read that just now and it makes perfect sense. If I am lazy with my swing ( lefty golfer) my miss is a high fade...wonder if a fitting is back in order. My driver swing speed is around 100-103mph and have been told that I fall in the stiff category but as the round goes on, and especially if I'm playing 36 holes I get sloppy or tired and the high fades come back.

I recently switched to Regular from a lifetime of stiff, I haven't hit the ball this well with a driver in quite a while.

Interestingly, I sent my specs off to Bombtech and "Sully" came back with Senior flex.

Given I only switched to regular 3 weeks ago I can't bring myself to follow that advice just yet, but he may be right.

My SS is 92-95mph and I almost always get fit into stiff shaft when I get #'s on trackman or any other high end system.
I've tried Regular flex shafts in my driver and fairways befor, even tipped and just don't get the same consistency.
I thought I could use Reg in the winter but that didn't work out either.
I have a hard transition and probably an early release.

I'm 63 yo, just 85 driver speed approx, but a strong transition and late release. Stiff was fitted for me a couple of times recently for driver with good results.

I just switched back to a reg driver (G25) and the slices do appear unless I move it more forward...allowing the shaft time to load to square. Or if I get carried away and a take too big and quick back swing ..... the face over-closes and low nowhere shots. That latter issue happened...a blip.. the last two rounds.

But otherwise (lol) and generally, it's been a very good switch for me, straight, less body stress and a tad more carry.

I have always been borderline, I have played tipped r flex shafts in the past with success but I always end up back at stiff.

I am very steep even with the driver and hit the ball very high, but my tempo has improved the last couple of years.

I could probably be longer with the right R flex but I am happy with my current set-up in stiff.

Your tempo plays a role too. If you have a smooth transition, regular may be for you.
Ive got the problem of being right inbetween regular and stiff, so I just go with stiff and swing a little harder. Ive tried a few regular shafts and they work well if I slow my swing dont a bit but I find that Im more inconsitent with regular and tend to hit more popups.
