Jordan Spieth has not slept for nearly 30 hours because he is too excited about playing at The Open.

His Dallas drawl can’t contain the buzz at being in Hoylake and even after a long flight from the United States his face is fresh and lights up every time he mentions this major championship - especially when he talks about winning it.

Spieth doesn’t turn 21 until the end of the month but there is a real chance he could lift the Claret Jug this week. He nearly pulled off one of the greatest wins in history at the Masters, leading by two strokes in the final round before a Bubba Watson masterclass prevented Spieth from breaking Tiger Woods’s record as the youngest ever Augusta champion.

What other record would a highly talented 20 year old golfer aspire? Nothing ridiculous about him setting Jack's gold standard as his goal.

Also Jordan setting this as a goal isn't even comparable to what Reed said.

Kid has a firm grasp of reality. He even admits nothing about his game stands out. He tees it up with the intention of winning. I would hope all those who tee it up feel the same way.

I love when guys like Patrick Reed and Jordan say things like this. We complain when people like Tiger get up to their press conferences and recycle cliches and talk a lot but say nothing. I applaud them. You need to have some confidence and swag to be a dominant player and I think it's cool to step up and speak your mind.

Good to have goals and the kid is nothing like Reed. However, god forbid a golfer talks about trying to achieve golfing immortality. For shame him mention Jack's record for shame. May the ghost of Ben hogan come down and spite him.

Dang, near impossible not to like spieth. Huge difference between these comments and Reed's. He seems to have a really good was on his shoulders. I heard once (might have been on here) that when golf channel would cover junior events, they would always go to him for the interview, because they could count on getting an actual intelligible response from him. Would be great for the game to see him win this week.

What's an off week tournament?

The dude won a PGA event AS A TEENAGER. Four guys have done that. FOUR. And none since the 1930's. How much more focused can he be?

Would it be better if he said his goal was to be a mediocre journeyman pro who will likely never win another event? I don't have a man-crush on this kid, but I do enjoy watching him play. Good for him for having lofty goals, that no doubt will be modified over the years.
