How heavy is too heavy?

I took a Scotty Cameron mid belly (which I believe is 400 grams) swapped the 10 gram weights with 20 gram weights in the heel and toe. I cut the shaft down to 36 inches, put a 15 inch Winn Counterbalanced grip on it and then added a 75 gram Tour Lock weight in the butt of the grip, which makes it feel HEAVY, but nice- very fluid.

Does anyone know how to make a putter head heavier besides lead tape? I have a TM Stingray cut down to about 29" and have already put about a roll and a half of lead tape on it. I would actually like to make it heavier if possible but just can't fit any more tape on it without compromising the height it sits off the ground.

I have used a belly putter that was cut down... it was too heavy for me. I think theres a company called bombtech (more of a driver company) but they have a putter that is very head heavy. I have never used it. But if you can control the speed there is nothing wrong with a really heavy putter.

If I can't get the ball to the hole on longer lags putts, it's too heavy. For me, that's been the case with most high MOI mallets. YMMV.

I would say that it depends of the design of the putter and the weight distribution.

My MM006 weights 342g and it feels perfect to my taste but my Sonoma and the DART at at 375g feels almost the same. I got a Metal-X #1 Mid that feels like a ton but it is not heavier than the DART.

I guess that the Grenade at 445g has a great weight distribution as Bombtech mentioned that it was engineered in that way. It would be very interesting to try it.

If you have questions let me know. I am launching a limited edition Gun Metal Black putter starting next week too.

Thanks so much for your comments.

Well, living in Australia makes it a little difficult to try it especially because after fixing my putting stroke, now it's a slight arc. I had too many unnecessary movements trying to achieve a kind of fake SBST that led me to send the ball wherever and from time to time to the hole.

I tried a few centre shaft models from other manufacturers and it didn't go well but your design is quite unique, taking into consideration so many aspects and probably could fit to a broader type of golfers than SBST.

That Gun Metal Black sounds promising!

I have a TM DLL that I had a hard time with speed on longer puts, I put a100g tour lock in and it has been magic. Speed control is automatic just point and shoot so smooth. The big surprise is how much better the insert feels, it no longer feels cheap and plastic. I was going to get rid of it but now I will keep it. The head is 395g the grip is 130g and the 100g tour lock, makes it 625g with out the shaft weight. I never thought I would play such a heavy
putter but am very pleased with this.

After playing for couple decades... The sweet spot for static weight for me is 510g +/-10g with a stock grip like Pingman around 60g.

Now, I can ho around various putter with a similar spec.

I do like threads like this, static weight is a key thing in putting consistency.

What do you mean about static weight- isn't that the weight of the putter when it isn't moving. Please expand upon this.
Thanks

Static weight is simply the weight of the putter when it is at rest on a scale. That weight can be distributed in the head, grip, or shaft. The swing weight of the putter will vary based on how the weight is distributed among those three factors. A 500 gram static weight putter with a heavy head and light grip will feel totally different than a 500 gram static weight putter with a light head and heavy grip/shaft. Many of the new counterbalanced putters have relatively similar swing weights as their short putter counterparts, but much higher static weights due to the heavier heads and counterbalance weight.

What are some of the heaviest putters being gamed- counterbalanced or otherwise?
What have been the pros and cons?
IMO, your putter weight is governed by stroke-style and green speed.

Faster greens = less hand action and heavier putter.
Slow greens = more hand action and lighter putter.

See article on slow greens at British Open by Jaime Diaz in the final issue of Golf World magazine - definitely worth some pondering.

I've just created a 600g head, it's the detour teryllium in the mods section. It's real heavy but has really smoothed the stroke out, my only concern is it may be too heavy.

 • 10 years later...

I know this is a very old thread but I haven't found a newer one which really addresses as directly the topic I want to discuss.

About 6 months ago, I began testing using extended length, counterbalanced putters (like Fowler used maybe 2 years ago-- I don't know if he is still using it since he is never high enough on the leader board to be on TV during the weekends).

After 4 months of experimentation with mixed results, I decided to just go nuts and try "super-heavy."  I got a 450 gram head which was originally marketed as a belly putter head, a 115 gram shaft, a 125 gram grip and inserted about 100 grams of counter weight.  It is 790 grams total static weight and feels like it could be used as a barbell by some who might be on the petite side.   I finally settled on 37" length because 38" putters sometimes caught on my shirt or jacket when I tried that length.

The first couple rounds with it were not very good from distance and I had way too many 3 putts with it.  I stuck with it because it really helped with short putts inside 10 feet or so.  I now have around 7 rounds in with it and I am really gaining lots of confidence with long putts and distance control and my 3 putts have gone way down.  I am also making more than my fair share of 15-30 foot putts with it.

I suppose there are no generalized rules as to what is "too heavy" as it must certainly vary golfer to golfer.  But, I am interested in how many people, if any,  have gone this route and are using a putter around 800 grams with any longer term success.

I have a Heavy Putter mallet. It’s like a kilo heavy. There are some still on EBay.
