Ferrules riding up irons a tad bit, what to do?

Recommended Posts

I am having trouble with ferrules that have become "dislodged" and are riding up my iron shafts a cm or two. I dont know what needs to be done to fix it. I dont know if they need to be reshafted and new ferrules put on ($??), or simply glued back down, or i could just cut them off (are ferrules solely for aesthetic purposes?). Can anyone give an opinion? Ping s56's w/ x100's if that matters. And i dont want to send them back to ping if at all possible.

Ferrule creep is sadly a common occurrence. You have a few options. One is just to heat them up (under hot water from the tap is easiest) and push them back down. But they will likely ride back up eventually with this method. Next, you can dab some epoxy under them and push them into position which should keep them in place fairly permanently. The last option is to cut them off though I feel they keep unnecessary moisture (when I wash my clubs) and debris away from the hosel opening.

Push the ferrule toward the shaft so you can clean the area of an dirt. Allow it to dry and then apply a small dab of epoxy and move the ferrule back down to where it should be. This should solve the problem permanently.

Just like the others have said heat them with hot water and slide them up. I like to use a little sandpaper to roughen up the underside of the ferrule and then use epoxy. Push the ferrules back into place and wipe off the excess epoxy .

First off you need to check and make sure the shafts aren't coming loose. Place the head between your shoes with your feet together and twist from the grip. If there is any movement at all the shafts need to be re-epoxied.

You may not be able to slide the ferrules up the shaft as the X100s are tapered from the tip to the first step.

Take a crescent wrench. Close it down on the shaft just above the ferrule top and tap down slightly with a hammer on the wrench itself. It should reseat the ferrule. If it becomes real loose in the future just put a dab of super glue between the ferrule bottom and hosel top and tap into place.

I would completely disregard all of this...If the shaft was coming loose, you would know it. The ferrules will come up on any shaft enough to re-epoxy. The cresent wrench will likely dent the top of the ferrule and lastly, super glue and plastic is a terrible mix. Use epoxy. Hate to be negative but I hate misinformation more...

If the shaft is coming loose you DO know it when it flies off. If you would have checked it before it could have been avoided.

And why is super glue and plastic so terrible??? It only takes a dab.

Did you miss the "slightly" when tapping with a crescent wrench? If the ferrule is loose then move it down with your hand but if it is a bit too tight then the crescent wrench will be fine. And if it still upsets you wrap a piece of electrical tape on the jaws.

I've been a professional clubmaker for over twenty years. There is no misinformation here. You can disregard all you want but what I say can, and will, stand up to scrutiny. Next time you are working with tapered shafts (actual tapered, tip to first step) see how far you can slide a ferrule up. Have fun. You may have to cut it off if you force it to far.

Personally I will use a shaft clamp on the shaft (http://www.golfworks.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_TSL d) and lightly tap that but not everyone has a shaft clamp.

I just washed and dried my clubs and noticed there were ferrules sliding up the shaft.  I wasn't inclined to wet the clubs again, so I used another suggestion and heated up the ferrule with my wife's blow dryer.  Three slow rotations on high heat and the ferrule was loose.

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the skill set which a player must have to play competitive golf.

Both above suggestions are good, but the “official” WRX response is “time for new irons!”
