Pretty funny. While I haven't had that issue before I will say I once hit my 7 iron 185 yards. Normally it's 160 at best. I went to the rang after working out and pulled the 7. Since I had just worked out I was all warmed up and ready to go. Very first ball I hit it good, didn't feel pure but good. I watched it go and go until it carried to the back pin at the range. I was floored I hit it that far. Have yet to repeat it again and don't know how it I hit that one shot.

I've done this several times but usually realize it when standing over the ball. The one time I didn't was when I was thinking I was teeing off the 1st with my 4i. Ball goes shooting way up in the air and lands about 160 out. I was thinking that maybe I just teed it up way high or something. Went to put it back in the bag and realized it was a 8 iron. Just got out in the wrong place and I wasn't paying attention. It's a little weird to go 8 iron/6 iron into a green.

Happened to me as well. I had 177.8 to the pin..pured my tee shot..and I see it go exactly 14.7 yards long. Hit my 5 instead of a 6.

Hit a 6 when I intended to hit 9 the other day. There is a back ground story.

Was playing a round with some business associates I thought were regular golfers. Round was arranged through a supplier who has a corporate membership near their office. Its a course I was a member at for a few years when I lived near by and likely have close to 500 rounds played. I moved a few years ago but the course hasn't really changed so I felt very comfortable. It was a late afternoon round, we were just ahead of the after work crowd. By the first fairway I figured out that one of my playing partners hadn't played in 6 years and the other was a total beginner. Not my ideal round but I can deal with it, some chit chat and just hit the ball. By the 3rd hole the group ahead of us is nowhere to be seen and 2 groups backed up behind us. I hate being that group. The 3rd is a 355 yard uphill par 4 I like to play 3 hybrid off the tee to stay short of a deep bunker. Since I am riding with one of my playing partners I need to wait for him to hit 5 shots to get up close to my tee ball. He gets out to hit number 6, actually wan't bad, I grab what I thought was my 9 and walk up 10 yards to my ball. He hits and I just want to get out of the way of the group behind, I get over the ball having barely stopped walking and hit. Ball over the green, the bunker behind and into the deep rough. Looked at the club, its my 6.

Course marshal witnessed all this had a chat with us and suggested for the rest of the round it might be best if we played best ball. We picked up the pace from there.

Hitting my bucket. Starting from wedge and working my way up. Pull my 9 iron and start murdering the ball. I mean, clearing 150 marker. I think, damn, I am now golfwrx distance territory.

Ok, let's continue going through the bag. Go to reach for my 6 iron and

Wait for it

Wait for it

Damn. That WAS my 6 iron.

Don't worry, in 10 years your 6 iron loft will be your new 9. We'll all be carrying 7 wedges by then.

I've pulled the wrong club too: more than once I have walked to the green with my driver and walked to the tee with my putter. Seriously.

I frequently take my driver to the box on par 3s... I'm tempted to work on a 150 yard driver slapshot to turn the joke around on my playing partners...

I hope so.
I was contemplating going with a 6 wedge setup this time. 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, and 64.

Haha, I have done this plenty of times (taken the driver up to a par 3, not the successful shot). It would take one pro to do your slap shop baby fade into a par 3 green and we would all be trying it. Hell they would probably make a baby driver to market to our craze like the driving iron now. Start the trend Jmilt!

We've all pulled the wrong club at times and smacked it.....only for many of us it was on the course!
Agreed, but for me its pulling my 56, instead of a 52 because the two do not look drastically different over the ball. Never a 6 iron over a 9! I love it!
I'm guilty with the wedges. Hit the 52 way over the back into the deep stuff. Knew it as soon as it came off the club, didn't have to look at the sole. Very frustrating to hit it flush and be dead.

I've done the 6/9 iron switcheroo twice now.
Long par 4 by my standard, killed my drive, perfect 9 iron distance....hit a solid 6 iron and cleared out the tee box behind the green I was approaching.
Par 3, my 6 iron is the perfect distance for the back-right pin location. Beautiful strike, high and graceful, looks like it's right on the flag...as it was coming down I realized it was going to be a little bit short. Look a club....D'oh! Only about 30 yds short of my target.

My royal screw up was slightly different. I was playing at a NJ muni for the second or third time in my life, and not in succession, so I was unfamiliar with the course. I was having a career day. On a par 4 I hit my drive into the right rough alongside the white yardage stripe on the cart path. I said OK, I'm 150 out, and picked my club and drilled a shot that never left the flag. I watched it fly right at it, and then over it, and then over the green and into the OB beyond. Damn ball was still rising when it cleared the flag. I was completely shocked. It took me a few to realize that the course uses white for all its cart path yardage stripes (not blue, white, red). I had been standing at the 100 yd marker. I put the next one on the green and two putted for double.

The end result was a 77 instead of a 75. To date still my best round ever.

How much would it have cost the course to buy a few cans of red and blue paint?? It's been 9 years and I'm still not over it.

I may take the bonehead award here. I start pacing from the 100 yard marker - I count 25 yards ... but in a moment of extreme brilliance I ADD 25 to 100 instead of subtracting - have no idea what I was thinking. I remember thinking distance didn't look right - I smooth a pitching wedge 50 yards over the green.
I actually scared myself - I started wondering if maybe there was something wrong with me .....

Reminds me of something a friend did on the 17 hole at my home course. It's a short par 4, so they have a 100 yard stake instead of the normal 150 yard marker. Well earlier this year I see him hit a wedge that flies the green by 20+ yards into some long fescue. He confessed he forgot the stake was 100 yards, despite having played to course probably 400 times or so.

one more whoops.....
short par 3...GPS says 135 front, 149 back....okay, hmmm, doesn't LOOK that far.
Pick a club, decent hit, watch it fly 15 yards over the green into waist-deep grass and weeds.
Look at GPS again....16? But I'm on the 17th tee....oh.....it's 135 to the front of the green I just left.
dangit
-click to 17, let the numbers stabilize....it was 125 to the back.
