Anybody else a runner?

I'm currently training for a 25k trail race and a marathon in Myanmar in November. Just wondering if anyone else runs and golfs, or if the two are mutually exclusive? Has anyone noticed an improvement or decline in their golf as a result of running regularly?

I run but not nearly as much as I'm assuming you do.

I usually run 4-5 miles per week. That fluctuates a bit depending on how many times I do (or don't) get to the courts to play some pick up basketball.

I'm not the fastest guy either. Usually between a 6:30-7:00 pace. Really just trying to get back into shape as I went several years with minimal exercise and put on too many pounds. It feels great to be getting back into shape, however.

I run 5-6k a day. I don't do half-marathons or any races of any kind....but i do run 5-6k every day. Been doing it for about 5 years (since i was about 28), it definitely helps stamina obviously, as i'm never tired during golf anymore

But i don't find it's challenging to do both, or that it hurts one or the other.

Of course training for a marathon is a different beast, and you may have trouble doing both when you're running your 30-35k runs to warm up for it

I need to lose weight and just started running awhile back. I actually jogged 3.8 miles last night. I've noticed a slight decline in my golf game only because i'm 40 years old, still out of shape, and I get sore and stiff after exercising. I'm sticking with it though, and it's getting easier and easier. The recovery time is taking less and less. I expect my golf swing to be more fluid again soon. I feel better than I have in years though. I still want to lose 40 lbs though. I'm putting my health first for awhile, golf second !

I was "running" quite a bit a couple of years ago after my back surgery. Had surgery in June, started training in October, and ran a 1/2 marathon in December. Now, my run is at about a 10:00/mile pace, but I could keep that pace for 9-10 miles without stopping. Since I reinjured my back, I haven't been running. I did go out a couple of weeks ago, after not running in 6-7 months, and run 2 miles straight, which I was happy with. Of course, due to my back problems, I couldn't walk later that day and the next.

Regarding my pace, it probably needs to be mentioned that I am 6'1" and at the time I ran the 1/2 marathon, I was 270 lbs. I'm 255 now, so even if I could run, fast just isn't happening for me.

I thoroughly enjoy running, and aside from the feeling of being pain free, running is the thing I miss the most.

I run about 20 miles a week. I haven't been playing golf, but it definitely doesn't hurt the game. Stamina is good, keeping heart rate down is good, but in all, it's just about feeling better. I am trying to lose weight since I've let myself get a bit out of hand. I do HRM training and have been working on staying in an aerobic, fat burning zone mixed with some runs for stamina and endurance building. I'll run anything from 12 minute miles to about 8:30. Within the next few months I hope to be 10/7.

In the past, I ran for cardio to supplement lifting, mostly doing intervals. Since having a kid, I've started running more since time to lift is limited. I wouldn't consider myself a serious runner...only run 3-4 days/week. I've ran two 5ks in my life and am now training for a half marathon in October. I'm not running to win overall or even in my age group, just for personal satisfaction.

As for it affecting my game, not really. I have better stamina and I seem to be able to keep my head in the game better late in the round, but my scores aren't necessarily better than they were before running.

Started running back in 2000 and 14 years later I'm proud to say I've done 7 marathons - London, Paris, Prague and Blackpool. I loved running especially training for the marathons through the winter. Found it helped my golf no end as my best playing years coincided with my running. Sadly my right knee isn't so good so I can't run as far and the one thing I miss the most is being really fit. But if you have the chance to run one of the big marathons you'll love it, the buzz you get from the crowd is fantastic

I do about 70 miles a week, it doesn't help my golf as my legs are always sore.

Since my wife and daughter have gotten in running, I tag along with them. But I won't run anything longer than a 5K. The girls do a lot of 10ks, have done a half, and are doing a Disney Challenge which has a 10K on Saturday and a half on Sunday. Only about four or five years ago my wife was very overweight and always swore she couldn't run. I'm really proud of her.

I'm pretty slow, my paces are usually in the 8:30-9:00 minute per mile pace. But for a stocky 50 year old, oh well. And I constantly remind my wife that I was a college sprinter. Those fast-twitch muscles don't translate well to distance running. I'm lucky if I run once every two weeks or so. Did a 5k race two Sundays ago and will do one this Sunday. Won't run at all in between. Will get in a couple hour+ games of basketball over the noon hour though.

I find that golf supports running better than the other way around. If walking instead of riding, that is (which is not really an option in SIN). Those over four hour low heart rate trecks in the woods looking for one's golf balls are good for the very foundation of the stamina on which the running fitness can be built on.

Other than that, it's hard to find time for long runs, golf and working on muscle strength.

Where do you run in Singapore? I used to run around NTU, then at East Coast Park and Bedok Reservoir. McRitchie every now and then, too. I moved to River Valley and they started building an MRT station at Ft. Canning which made it a bit unpleasant to run at especially since one needs to do quite a few laps for decent distance.

Do you play with SRGA (Singapore Random Golf Association) guys?

I live in Tanglin, so run down the Alexandra Canal a lot, or head up to Macritchie at the weekend.

Not heard of the SRGA before - I have a few mates I get a game in with on occasion, but being an expat, the situation is pretty fluid!

I used to run a lot (to me anyways), about 40 miles a week. Runs would be be between 3 - 11 miles and I hit hills a lot. Anything under 3 miles didn't count as a run. Then I started playing poker a lot, had kids, and started moving up at work which meant more hours. Just started again on Sunday and did 3.5 miles. Legs not feeling so good today but going to hit it again after work. Can't imagine it's going to help the golf game as I get back into it, but care more about being healthy for the kids.
