Tipped Kai'li, how much is too much?

I picked up a Kai'li 70 S pull recently. Was told it hadn't been over tipped. Tip to graphics measurement indicates it's been tipped 1.5". I was about to go get my money back, but figured I'd ask here first to see how much you guys are tipping these. I intended to put it in a 3 wood and end up at .75" tipped overall. I currently play an a'hina 70 S in my 3 wood tipped at .75" or 1/4" over standard. A whole inch over standard tipping seems excessive to me. Leading me to believe that it's going to be overly stiff and launch similar to what I already have in the a'hina. My goal was to increase launch just a little bit over my current shaft. I hit the a'hina well and launch it high off the tee. Off the deck is fine, but I can't always pull off the higher than normal soft fade I like to hit on occasion. I've also read that the Kai'li tend to feel soft or even play soft to flex. Just wanted to check before I go off on somebody.

 

My driver SS ranges between 103 when my hip is hurting and 110ish is normal.

Well your first mistake was not asking what over tipped meant. You definitely should have asked the seller what the tipping was by giving him tip to graphics measurements to help.

Regardless, 1.5" for a 3 wood is not uncommon. My understanding is most are tipped 1", and that extra half inch might just give you more stability.

When I read a lot of the WITB stats it seems plenty of tour players seem to have driver shafts tipped .5 - 1" at least with 3 woods tipped generally tipped a further .5".

Of course if you are not a tour play (which most of us clearly aren't) this is a pretty silly comment for me to have made, other than that 1.5" of tipping probably hasn't destroyed the shaft, just made the tip a little stronger.

Are you able to install the shaft and test it before you return it? If so I would definitely have a go. I have always though things like shaft flex and tipping etc have an effect but a much less significant effect than some people first believe. Others might disagree with me there.

They have a butter feel that is mistaken as softer. The Kai'li will give you higher trajectory without sacrificing too much spin. The bend profile is different than the Ahina and you will see a difference in results. I use to play the Ahina in all my woods. I left my 3 wood untipped and still could not get that ball up unless it was on a tee. The Kaili get it up better off the deck but not as much as you might think. I went from low to mid. So its is just a little. You are going from mid high to hopefully high so it should work.

If it is over tipped, it not only changes that, but it effects the bend profile as well. It lowers the kick point.

I bought one just like you that was tipped the same and it sucked. I put it in an old RBZ Tour 3 wood and let a strong player try it. He bought it and it is his favorite club. He is a hitter, not a swinger like me.

No one can determine what may or may not work, but....I've always found the Diamana series blue to be fairly soft tipped. Done quite a few builds for decent players and 1.25" to 1.50" is the max I'd trust without going up in flex or weight .
