Jim Furyk move/ shallowing

So I was talking to my instructor, top 50 in nation, about EE and which tour players do it. He mentioned Jim Furyk and showed me how he brought the club really steep up on backswing and then on the way down used hip thrust as one of the ways to help shallow his swing. Watched a video later on and noticed he did EE on downswing into impact and right elbow went behind him a bit. He got back to the tush line right after impact or almost at the same time.

My question is, if Jim does this to help him shallow such a steep backswing, why are we teaching people to take it back so steep only to have to shallow on downswing. Not saying either way is wrong, just thought this was interesting.

Red,

Not sure I understand your question? Are you saying why would you want to be steep in backswing? You don't have to be. Steep plane wants to shift to shallow in downswing. Shallow swing shifts to steep. When this occurs is the key. You can be steep going back IF you shallow early enough. You can be shallow going back IF you steepen late enough.

Jim Furyk is beyond steep .But he makes up for this backwing position with a terrific compensatory move in transition that shallow the shaft as you describe.
Everything else equal ,the steeper the swing, the wider the arc ,resulting in a higher longer shot
The further that lower right arm varies from a vertical position at the top ,the more rotation is required to shallow the shaft This makes the transition that much more difficult

I don't think any good teacher would tell someone to take it back "steep", but being more upright on the backswing then you'd want to end up in the downswing gives room to shallow out the shaft in transition. In contrast, if it gets take back too flat and laid off, the club tends to want to come up and over in transition and steepen. So the problem is that the flatter the club is swung in the backswing, the steeper people tend to get it in the downswing.

yea, i guess doesnt really matter either way. Just thinking, since steep going back requires a more shallow move on downswing and hip thrust is an easy shallow move, do you think people could start to resort to hip thrusting in order to shallow

You don't have to hip thrust from a steep backswing. Furyk's arms just get behind him as he shallows. So then he needs to open up/rotate a lot through impact. If his arms were more in front, that would also shallow the club and could allow for a more lateral/tush line look.

yea, that makes sense. I didnt think you had to hip thrust, I just thought it might be an easy way that some might get into. Ive seen the steep to shallow work for many people, never worked the best for me though.

Jim is loading with this move. He always did this since he was a child.
No teacher is really teaching that much of plane shift, but there is always either an over or under move in transition. Usually a little steeper back and shallower down is better for longer shots and flatter lie angles. The main advantage of "steep then shallow" is the loading effect on the right elbow. The more you shallow the plane the more you rotate the right arm clockwise. This forces the right elbow forward an retains the lag angle longer. This leads to less EE.
