Guys golf trip - need competition ideas

Have a guys trip up in Maine this September.

 

Have 8 guys and would like to figure out some sort of team competition (2 person or 4 person). We will have three rounds on a very difficult mountain course. The lesser golfers will 100% lose 10+ balls on this course. I just want to come up with a competition that will keep these guys interested even if the course is kicking their a**. Bonus points to anyone that can add in drinking and card games into the mix.

 

Handicaps vary as follows -

 

2 guys - 5 handicap

2 guys - 11 handicap

3 guys - 13 handicap

1 guy - 17 handicap

Are you set on playing your own balls throughout all 18 holes every day?

If not, a two man team, 6,6,6 format of modified alternate shot, better ball and scramble could be fun.

Don't count penalty strokes. Would help the higher hdcpers a lot. At end of round add to score, not for competition though.

Would love for them to play their own ball when possible.

Modified scramble one day would also be a good option if we needed to mix things up a bit.

double bogey or worse buys a round of beer
make a game where you try to distract the other player off the tee only (so you are not crazy slow) and if you succeed that person buys you a drink. This way you can all get creative on how to distract the other players. think baseketball lol.

I would play Stableford tournament, with some stuff on the side as longest drive, closest to the pin, etc. Of course all for beer or cigars.

Stableford has to be the best for the higher handicaps that may struggle since quadruple bogey hurts them no worse than a double bogey.

Bingo, Bango, Bongo is a easy game that is great when you have a large variance in handicap/skill level.

You could very easily add in some component that makes it a drinking game too.

Really cool game I found was 3 putt poker.

Bring a deck of cards. Everyone throw in $10 in pot. Everyone gets 1 card to start the round. Every time someone 3 jacks they put in another dollar. Every time you 1 putt you get a new card. 2 putts are nothing. At the end of the round every one makes their best hand. Obviously if someone has less then 5 cards they better hope they have 2 of something!

You can obviously change the $$ amounts any ways. Also you can add to it, like my idea was a birdie would erase a 3 putt.

I like it because no matter how bad your rounds going, its always hilarious when you hit a shot pin high or below a front pin location and the ball is just on the fringe. Or you leave a chip short and it catches on the fringe. Frustrating golf but entertaining because you should get a card!! Only goes down as a putt if your on the green! Oh and also if you hole out from off the green you should get a card!

Fun game. I've done it a few times and can't make up my mind if I like to look at my cards as I get them or stay blind till the end. I think it would be cool for everyone to stay blind and have everyone flip up a card at a time around beers in the clubhouse!

Since you know everyone's handicap, play a modified Stableford. Most over average points per round wins the round. Most over average points for all rounds combined is the champ. Do the same for teams. Draw teams out of a hat. We did this in June, four rounds. Everyone had a chance to win, and a lower handicap took the overall. We give one point for double, two for bogey, three for par, five for birdie, seven for eagle. Just figure everyone's average points based on handicaps, and go from there.

We do an 8 man three day in Northern Michigan every year. On day one we do a two man scramble best ball. The pairings are 1/4 and 2/3. It let's the bad players get carried by the best player. Day two we play 36. In the morning we do a 2 man better ball. Each of these is worth a point to the winning team. In the afternoon we do singles match play which is also worth a point. Then on day three we do a team scramble, which is worth two points. By making the scramble worth two points it basically guarantees the scramble is the biggest event that will determine the winner. For day three to matter, a team only has to take 1/2 a point on days 1 or 2.

We take two or three guys every year that are worse than a 17 handicap and they still love it. They lose a ton of balls and they don't care, they're just having fun. To be honest, I think they have more fun when they do match play against each other as it's one of the more actual true competitive events they play. And, at a minimum, they always get the drunkest and cause high comedy.
