Very pleased to read this about Royal Porthcawl.
RP is a golf masterpiece, and manages to blend that marvelous dichotomy of elite and friendly, playable and brutal. Don't be fooled by those soft Welsh voices, many of the members of this club are amongst both business and golf's power-brokers; dozens of R&A men at the club. They have tried to keep the course a secret for decades!

I doubt Watson would like it quite as well from 100 yards back of every tee the Champions Tour guys were using that week. Then again, I haven't won 8 majors...

100 yards, LOL -- that's quite an exaggeration -- try 20 maybe. Watson could pound it when he was young, and I'll bet he is still as long as guys like Luke Donald and KJ.

20 yards x 18 holes = 360 yards. So, the Champions Tour is playing courses that are only 360 yards shorter than PGA Tour or Euro Tour. I find it hard to believe that happens very often, especially in majors. Yes, there was some exaggeration on my part (not everything translates in electronic posting), but I think you got my overall point despite taking the opportunity for sarcasm. Despite your use of teenage jargon (LOL, in caps, no less), you wouldn't happen to be closer in age to Tom Watson than Bubba Watson would you? Would explain where you are coming from...

Right in between their ages and I haven't lost any distance yet. "LOL" as an expression crosses all ages and is is customarily put in capital letters or as you noted in your teenage jargon "caps." I'm trying to remember who played better at the last open, was it Bubba or Tom? A bit more about "LOL," it actually stated life on the old usenet (newsgroups) back in the day before the world wide web, and originated with computer nerds and college grad students, not teenagers; So it's not really all that hip of an expression anymore!

Poor analogy. Russia is not a part of some US Commonwealth. It would be more like having the USO in Puerto Rico. If PR had a decent track, I would fully support it.

I thought the name was simply The Open Championship. Theoretically it could be held anywhere. Malaysia would be cool.

is this similar to the pubcrawls i did in college? If so, then yes they should do it
I'm officially lobbying the local council to get the town renamed Pubcrawl.

And to be honest you'll need a drink if you want to spend 4 days in that town.

I was thinking Malaysia as well. It's too bad the R&A is so short-sighted as to hold the "Open Championship" that crowns the "Champion Golfer of the Year" at the same nine courses on one tiny island. There's a big world out there, R&A. The "A" is the most operative character in the abbreviation, apparently.

No way. Not outside the UK. Not happening. Nothing wrong with The Open. Muirfield 2013 was the textbook major, maybe the best of all time, IMHO. All worked great, course setup, weather, leaderboard. It was simply the best.

The PGA Championship, the red-headed step child of the majors needs an injection of credibility and moving it around with Royal Melbourne being the inaugural outlier would work nicely. Asia next or maybe South America.

That's an interesting take. Hey, I love the idea of taking an E.R.C. and ripping a Super Condor over a hotel as much as the next guy, but I think the "Open Championship" requires a global approach to be worthy of that name.

Makes no sense and has no bearing on whether it is "open". Let's have the Australian Masters in France.

The term "open" indicates that anyone can qualify wheter you are a pro or not. It has nothing to do with geographical aspects

I can see the R&A editing the rota, but no way they will add a course outside of GB.
It's taken them six decades to get back to Royal Portrush. I don't really see them going out on a limb anytime soon. I'd be surprised if any of us live to see the RA hold an Open at a course that's never previously hosted one.
