Hey WRX vintage fans... I haven't seen anyone post a newly acquired set of vintage irons lately...! Where are all the great sticks everyone is finding out there...? Or are you's out there honing your game with some of the great sticks I've seen posted,,,? :golfer:

I have a set of copper ping zings minus the 8 iron it's in a tree somewhere,never to be found...are they worth anything of value?also have a set of black dot graphite ping eye 2... 2 thru sw//minus 8 iron something about those 8 irons

Check ebay for a replacement of the Ping Eye 8 iron it should not be too difficult to find as the black lie is considered the standard lie. The Ping Zing may take more time to find the replacement.

the copper zings are worth some $. not as much as others but still collectable . check ironfinders.com i passed on 2 nice wilson staff turf rider sole sets but bought 2 somewhat unsusal staff sand wedges today. they have diff sole grinds from most staffs.

Okay you asked for some new acquisitions ....

First up '63 MT M1 CF 4000's / Tourney Action 1 shafts, 2-11i. extended to "modern" i.e. 80's playing lengths gripped with NOS Full cord Lamkin Crossline Tour wraps.

Next is my first Persimmon driver re-shaft. From Japanese maker "J Shogimen" this bears some similarities to the old Powerbuilt Citation's. This had a horrific boron / graphite shaft which felt like a noodle and was std bore. I always liked the look of the head so it was a good candidate for this project. This head has not been refinished.
I've gone bore through and installed a DG X200 playing at 44 inches. Full cord Royal Crossline grip. Static weight 397 grams . This re-shaft was a "test run" for my Joe Powell DSP GT which arrived with a bent shaft...

I just picked up a 1961 set of Hogan Power Thrust+ irons, 2-E minus the 8 iron. I picked up a 1962 8 iron to fill in until I track a 1961 down. They're in great shape.

Your not wrong there. These Mac's did not disappoint me. I could waffle on for hours about these, so don't get me started. What I can say is that I've never hit so many greens before!
And the Joe Powell DSP might not even get a look in at this stage as the Japanese blonde is a serious fairway finder.

Thanks! I really like them even though they have a crisper feel than my Redlines. I wonder how much of that is the shaft or related to the grips. They have the original Golf Pride Under Cushion leather grip with the bh logo and True Temper Pro Fit shafts. In any event, they definitely will be one of the 2 or 3 iron sets that are in constant rotation. Pictures don't do them justice. They are a gorgeous design.

I bet its the grips. Even if they're playable, in my experience the old leather grips, or maybe its the underlisting, get hard and leave a brittle feeling at impact.

You're probably right. I have a set of M-85 Mac's that feel crisp as well, but I can't bear to replace the leather grips on those either.

You're probably right. I have a set of M-85 Mac's that feel crisp as well, but I can't bear to replace the leather grips on those either.

I went to re-grip my 1959 set of Mac CF4000 PT2's and found why they feel so wonky, despite the playable leather -- they have wooden dowels inserted into the butt end that act like a 1" shaft extension, only the extension has a greater diameter than the shaft to match the thickness of the underlisting. All of this allows the end of the leather strip to be tacked into place with a small nail into the wood.

So, if I want to re-grip these I'm also going to have to put shaft extenders in.

Great find and the old Macs are great sticks for sure... The driver will be a boomer for sure and let us know how they all wok together so we can create our own visuals from where we sit...

Okay first the wedges are a Scratch 53* 8620 D/S with much of bounce ground out by me and a tonne of lead tape, This is very much a confidence club for me and my scoring suffers without it. The other is the early forged Spalding Johnny Miller Tour wedge ( I think it plays at around 57*) I use it mostly as a dedicated SW or in lush lies. As for the grind, well a picture should tell you more than I can. It has a very subtle concave grind which I've tried to capture on camera. I normally don't play a PW ( hence why the 11 iron is not pictured in the bag above).

The driver is consistent as hell, the weight of it really let me drive through the ball at a 110%. Long baby fades all day long with the exception of a couple of pushed shots when I got lazy.
While persimmon generally plays a little shorter than todays frying pans, I felt I was at no disadvantage as my real strength has always been my long iron play.
Thats where the Macs really shined. These clubs just "clicked" for me like the final piece of the puzzle. Heavy and flat is what I like, yet I've never got my hands on anything that was originally designed to be set up that way before.
The one thing which gave me so much confidence with these was that the balls trajectory matched how I naturally visualise my ball flight. That's something I had never truly experienced before.
The most surprising thing of all with these was the sound at impact..... almost a loud persimmon like thwack.

I don't expect that everybody would get along with these irons as I do. I'm "mostly" a hitter, I usually pick the ball and take very little if any divots so sharp leading edges don't phase me. I thrive on feedback which these have in truck loads, they really will bark at you if you get things wrong.

This was my first outing with this setup, I had two clubs ( 5 wood & 53 wedge) in the bag that I normally carry. The course had seen huge amounts of rain during the week and balls frequently plugged so "clean & place" was allowed. My scoring was rubbish. As much as I like to think I'm George Knudson, I unfortunately putt like him too...

The concept of experimenting with your set fluffy265 is something that is fun, practical and shows positive results... I hit most stuff that I use at the same trajectory from set to set. I try to achieve playing to scratch golf and have done this several times this season and beat par twice. Highest round is about 81 and that was the result of a day of golf that exhibited less then stellar ball striking and mis-reads on some putts.

The older vintage sets can be tweaked so much more readily then a lot of the newer gear. The metal was more compliant to tweaks and one not be too concerned about adjusting them 5 to 7 degrees. With sharp leading edges on the older stuff usually means not strengthening the lofts more then about 2* strong. The sharper leading edges of vintage stuff plays much better on firm fairways and with flatter lies this translates into a reduction in the angle of the down-stroke and moves the ball more consistently from the fairway to the green.

George Knudson was a prime example of someone who didn't hesitate to hit the ball hard into a tight pin. And yes - putting is truly a feel shot and if the shoulders hang without tension then the results can often times be quite favorable. Thanks for sharing...!

I just completed the acquisition of the missing iron from this set and thought I would share pics of them on this thread. Here is a set of MacGregor -Classic- Jack Nicklaus signature stainless irons. Circa mid 1980's or so. Tougher to bend then forged; they have minimum offset; Regular lightweight True Temper shafts. They may have been sold at Sears or a department store, as they are not tour irons but are a nice set nevertheless. I anticipate that they will make a nice set with some new grips; a bid of swing weight for a someone who wants to get out on the course and plays to about a 10- 20 handicap. Nice set. I'm sure someone who is just looking to play casual golf will love them. Too many of those type of sets go to the scrap heap. It's nice to see them rescued and reused.

Blade Junkie, if they are what they seem, Hogan/Slazenger Precisions, they will be stainless and you will love them, I have a set and they are fabulous irons, best of both worlds...Precisions and forged stainless steel, will polish up to like new condition and the grooves should be very good also.

Yep - this is what I thought as well ! Fingers crossed ... I'm hoping it is a 3-Exploder set as I have an orphan Precision 2-iron already.

Could turn out to be the best 99p I have ever spent (that's a dollar and sixty cents for those of you Stateside!)

The putter is a Bronty Rustler - UK model that i doubt many have heard of. First guy I ever played golf with aged 15 used one of those - he holed miles of putts with it ... this club in itself is a nice walk down memory lane for me and worth the 99p on it's own lol.

There are also 4 woods in the sale - 1,3,4 Cypress Point Longflite and a PGF utility wood called a "Little Slammer". They are all painted black so I'm guessing laminates ... anyone heard of or know anything about "Cypress Point" woods ?
