No new acquistions...?

Recommended Posts

I have always been of the opinion that since the grips are the only part of the tool that comes in contact with the hands that they fall under the genre of "highly individual." Therefore, with the vast options available inside the conforming guidelines, personal preference should rule the decision. There are some absolutely great grips that some rave about that I would remove, even if they were new, only because they just don't "feel" right in my hands.

A followup question has occurred to me. Should I try and salvage older grips? Point in case, picked up some Wilson's with original GP Classic cord grips. They are hard as a rock and I don't care for cord grips. But they are not rotted and in pretty good shape (5/10). I have experience and tools necessary to remove grips. Do you folks make the attempt to save them for.......posterity I guess. TIA for opinions.
Absolutely not, lol! I've tried this multiple times and it is always a fail. Save yourself a lot of time and frustration by cutting them off and re-gripping now. As I've learned, vintage clubs with original grips are just a novelty (and rarely a collectible) -- but vintage clubs with new grips are bada** golf clubs.

Or as another poster phrased it, if you purchased a '65 Mustang would you want to take it for a spin with the original tires?

Not new acquistions, but I've never posted any pictures of my 1967 Hogan PC7's before. I played them last night for the first time in about 6 months, since one of the heads came loose. I fixed it a couple months ago and hit them at the range, then loaned them to my neighbor.

I didn't score too well but I sure hit some satisfying shots, including a 4 iron to the center of the #2 green, a 5 iron straight over the #3 flag (and green, lol), a 7 iron that landed a foot from the #6 flag, and a 2 iron off the tee that flew about 200 yards and rolled out another 25.

I really love the the blade on blade concept of these Hogans, and their compact size. They are also in really nice condition for their age. They have the original TT Rocket shafts in R but they play very stiff.

Nice clubs Holden! I've got the Slazenger edition of those. To be honest, they've never been my favourite set of irons to play and are in the shed waiting for that 1960s-themed round - but yours certainly look terrific. As mine are stainless steel and quite dull with age, it should perhaps be a winter project to clean mine up. At the back of my mind has always been the option of taking a file to the soles and doing a little custom grinding. I do like the muscleback, but I wouldn't mind a softer leading edge when doing so wouldn't compromise any chrome plating.

The Mustang analogy succinctly resolves the issue......the grips go under the knife. Thanks to all that have been reponding to my ? as I get my feet wet around here. Have no clue yet how well I'll hit these vintage clubs (not that great of a golfer to begin with, but who cares about that). At least with new grips and shined up clubs they'll look "bad**s", so I got that going for me......which is nice.

Oh yeah, echoing others, kudos on those Hogans. So many sweet golf clubs being posted by you folks. My head is in a swirl.....

Winner there, get some pics up, gutted i never saw tjose.
I'm tempted to have this iron set completely tarted up. Heads refinished, maybe even new shafts, new ferrules ... etc etc

Certainly need new grips ... any suggestions for that ? I'm learning towards Avon Chamois II in black at the moment ... want something with the period "look" ...
...Take a look at the "Whisper" grips from Golf Pride. These have a spongy feel to them compared to the modern tour wrap 2g grip. The brown coloured ones are nice and have a matching putter grip too.

The bag is in pretty good shape, considering its age. The colour match of the headcovers and the bag is a nice touch. Not really sure about the colour though......Looks more suited to looking after a set of womens clubs.

The Hogans are Slazenger '59 Starbursts. They belong in THIS bag, along with their brothers / sisters.

I bought these last month, finally had time to clean them up (or at least the irons) and regrip. They are MacGregor CF4000 PT2 (from 1959 I believe), 2 iron thru Double Service wedge, and the 1-2-3-4 woods (actually the driver is a slightly different model, 2-3-4 appear to match the irons).

They were really rough when I bought them but the ceramic faces seemed to be mostly intact, so for $25 I took a chance. There was a good bit of surface rust, and some pitting, but most of it cleaned up. While they have been stored improperly, they don't look to have too many miles on them.

Here's the before pics:

And the driver close-up with a big chunk missing from the face:

They had the original leather grips, which are always cool to look at and contemplate keeping but I just can't get around the hard feeling they transmit at impact. When I took off the grips I found that they did not have wooden butt dowels as expected, just a plastic cap/insert and a one inch long rubber cork-like material wrapped around the end of the shaft butt. Underneath the leather wrap was pitch paper (picture medical tape soaked in emulsified asphalt -- or a soft, thin roofing paper), and under that several wraps of some kind of paper tape that was very thick, dry, and brittle. Perhaps that was the source of the impact harshness.

I soaked them in a plastic water pitcher filled with enough vinegar to cover the heads for 15 minutes or so and then scrubbed them with a copper wire brush. That worked well on the surface rust but unfortunately, they have a good bit of rust pitting that did not come off. Here's some after pics (the faces actually looked a little better before I took them to the range -- I neglected to clean them before shooting these):

(I added my '63 Mac TP Expediter sand iron to the set)

Here's a shot of the new grips -- Lampkin Perma Wrap Classics -- these are a dead ringer reproduction of the original MacGregor leather wraps that came off of these.

I took them back to the range yesterday after completing the new grips and bending them to my usual specs. They definitely have a much better feel to them now. I love the way these set up and frame the ball, they seem to be a bit shorter heel to toe than most classic blades, and the ceramic faces definitely provide a visual aid for centering the ball. In fact, my usual miss is a toe shot, but I probably hit 150 balls and only had a couple of toe misses. I attribute that to the contrast of the chrome vs ceramic face. It really enabled me to focus on the face centers.

The woods are a disaster, but I'm looking forward to trying to resuscitate them. I'll have to finish up some other woods projects first, though.

All in all, I think these are terrific irons. I'm looking forward to taking them out for a full round.

And if you play persimmon, you're my friend

Hard to say without pics, but isn't the difference just that Holden's have the black ceramic face and yours don't?

There's a current listing on eBay for irons like Old Tom mentions, they have a copper face and the seller lists them as 1958 models, fwiw. These have the 'recessed weight' stamp on the back as he describes:

Here are a couple of my favorite Ben Hogan sets that I own.

1993 FT Forged, 3-EQ, Apex 4 shafts, virtually new condition.

1988 Redline Forged, 3-EQ, SW, very little use, Apex 4 shafts. I have another exact set of these which are my Classic gamers.

I have a set of 1999 Apex Forged, 3-EQ, Apex 4 shafts, off to the Iron Factory for a tune up..

Enjoy!

Thought I would add that in my "pick up" today, that I got the following:
3 & 4'wood, Macgregor tourney M75TW's
(2) Macgregor Super EOM M85w's
Macgregor A2W driver
Macgregor MTWL4 driver
Macgregor PT1 2-wood
H&B Louisville Grand Slam 2-wood
1964 The Wilson Napa putter with original leather grip

And the aforementioned Calamity Jane putter, the Macgregor Toney Penna VFQ TP-63 2-iron and six other old irons/putters..

Love days like this!!

Gotta figure out what to keep and what to sell!
