Those grips were sorta the popular option in the 60s--- especially for replacement grips--- From what I observed in the past Macgregors in that era came with either real leather wrapped grips or the rubber option were offered. The rubber MT grips had MT on them and were black and red. I can remember when I first messing with clubs in like 1969 just putting grips on those white Pro Only were a popular replacement option or at least in my area. Now it may have been the price point because my old man could get Golf Pride grips cheap locally. I remember ( sigh) those grips were around  0.50 each my cost. I charged $2 per club grip and all

Excellent choice!  Wood Brothers are outstanding woods.  Mine is a tour made driver (made for Gene Sauers) and in excellent condition.  I seriously doubt I part with it.  The only way I will part with it is for a trade for top tier WB Australian or tour made red insert Texan.

3. Only buy at the 1/2 price sale at thrift stores

I Found these and I just couldn't walk away. I tried; I took a step away from the rack, but I was pulled back without the willpower to stop.

They were just too clean to leave behind and I've always wanted to hit the ceramic faces. I'll see how the play in the Spring.

I am in the same boat as you are. My back was jumping just looking and THINKING about hitting those> But yeah even though I am thinning the heard I would have bought those to save them from destruction

Ended up with two new clubs this week ( I know I know I am trying to quit) but these 2 are definetely gamers. One of the PGS guys came into an assortment of Mac wedges including a MT VFQ 11 iron and it is a FC too! He graciously sent it to me for postage only even though it was in great shape. Of course in my style I could not let that slide so I sent him some extra to buy him a few beverages of his choice. I do have a FC 11 iron with the set that Stickfish sent me but the VFQ has a little different weight placement and a thinner sole. I had one back in the day and it was stolen. Hit a great shot with it on the course Friday with no practice and 2 good ones in the Shootout Saturday with it. 

 

The other wedge is a Zing 2 BECU LW courtesy of WRXer Cardoustie--- I gave him a beautiful Penna Blonde driver with a X-100 shaft which he can handle and he gave me the wedge.

 

Pics I still can not do but he did post pics of both wedges and the Penna driver in General Talk under The Man The Myth and the Legend

I saw the pics in the other thread. A similar Toney Penna was up for auction here recently, but I didn't bid on it (I have enough drivers. Fairway woods are a different matter). Should I have got it? It might still be up for sale.

IMHO yes---- Wish you were on this side of the world man I could hook you up on Penna Drivers. Believe it or not that driver came in my largest single day haul from the scrapyard--- 53 clubs among them several Penna drivers and 2 full matching sets of Izette woods and 2 other Izette drivers. Also a plethera of Wilson wedges. The whole haul because scrap prices were low was less than $5 for the whole lot. Golf clubs average out at 1 lb each actually that is the minimun weight they go at and I got those at 0.05 each. Now you know why I have so much stuff and give away so much stuff.

 

I have one Penna driver similar to that one that is a Custom Made and has never been hit--- I posted it on here some years back under Gentlemen Prefer Blondes--- That one is not a junkyard find and I know the history on it--- A Pro friend of mine won it in a tournament in the mid 90s. It was on display for years in his office. When he retired he sent it to me via his son because he knew I would love and appreciate it. Still has the original TP rubber grip but in bad shape now. What intriques me is the fact EVERY screw in the face and sole plate is lined up perfectly and so is the weight port on the sole. That one stays in the house in the front bedroom in one of John Daly's old Wilson Staff bags along with a VIP SW that Curtis Strange himself gave me. That one is a keeper and is the only unhit club I own and will stay that way as long as I breathe.

LOL BTW that pic is sorta an embarassment to me because of the TM irons--- Not as sexy IMHO as the VIPs but kinda sexy for a set of CBs--- But hey gotta roll that way for now due to my back injury

Y...you picked up matching sets of Izette woods off a scrapheap for a few cents...? I'm impressed. A tiny bit envious, perhaps, but mostly just really, really impressed.

 

So I checked, and the TP driver that was up for auction here is still up and it looks great, but it's starting at around $90US. If I needed a driver, I might have bid on it, but I think I'll pass this time.

Yeah IMHO that is a little high---- If you were over here I would have sent you one as I have done others and others have done me for just postage--- I am into classic clubs not for the money but the love of them and saving them from the shredder. If anyone saw a big metal shredder in operation they would share my horrow of even thinking about a classic club going to its death that way. Yep those shredders are hot noisy and very violent

Having said that, I can just imagine the look on my wife's face if a box of golf clubs from America turned up one day: "What!? So you've bought every club in Japan that now you're importing from overseas????"

So, what do folks think about these original TT Dynamic shafts? Also, when do we think these clubs came out? Early 40s? I've read different years for the introduction of the Dynamic shaft, 1938 and 1942.

Hey all. I’m relatively new to vintage and recently got bit kinda hard. Obviously I’ve always sought after the old Macgregor persimmons but never new where to get them. Still don’t have anything truly old yet but that’s probably gonna change very soon. Here’s my start. I’ve wanted to do a Nicklaus memorial Masters bag for awhile and while these aren’t the limited special editions they are Muirfield 20th anniversary 2-sw and Muirfield metal Driver and 3w in decent shape. Bag chatter a plenty but no giant gouges in soles and grooves are pretty kgood shape. 1 picture is the sw,pw,9&8 and you can see the faces are still good. Little tarnish or actual wear in sw and pw but not so bad. They need a little cleaning, little rust here and there in script and star stamps but nothing that shouldn’t clean right up. Even have very good Golf Pride Tour wraps on em so literally could take em out and play em as they came. Probably won’t play the metal woods but are in decent shape, not any dummy or sky ball marks anyways. May have paid too much for these compared to what a lot of you guys pick clubs up for but I’m ok with it. I did stumble on some Muirfield persimmon 3 and 5 wood at a thrift store in playable shape other than grips for $6 bucks a piece. Lamination is peeling off bottom of 3 wood. May have these redone but not sure on that yet. Also picked up a Muirfield persimmon driver in pretty good condition for $25 from a guy near me with an unbelievable collection of vintage that I will purchasing from in the future. I also added in the Macgregor Response putter I got at 2nd Swing probably 4 years ago for $19.99. It is the 700 model, not the 615 Nicklaus used so trying to figure out what the difference is. The 615 looks like it has weights near the toe and heal on the bottom and mine is just a solid cast piece. Gonna instal my favorite Winn NPT midsize 1.10 grip on it. I think I’m gonna flatten the lies on the irons a degree or so also and make sure lofts are to spec and plan on playing these once in awhile, at least monthly. Have a line on actual honest to goodness Macgregor persimmons to really set this set apart. Working on 2 Tommy Armour 945w drivers and a 693 3 wood. One of the drivers is unrestored and in fantastic original condition and the other has been restored and has obvious sole plate wear. Thinking one too hang on the wall and other too actually play. Anyways update this potential purchase down the road

This is the set the started my collection. Got theses couple years ago from 2nd Swing for about $60 bucks if I remember right. 2-SW Macgregor  Colokrom reproductions from mid 80s I think?? Pw has chrome plating peeling and copper finish is wearing on faces but grooves are still good and other than PW chrome is awesome. Saw a YouTube video on DIY electroplating the copper finish and didn’t look too hard so if I really get inspired possibly redo the copper faces myself. Maybe have PW re chromed. Wondering if these are the original grips and are complete dead needing to be replaced. Afraid to even swing these in current grip condition. Really would like to get an original set of these things!

Finally my practice experimental set. Macgregor JNP 3-PW. 7 iron has rusty area from wear near leading edge, 8 iron has big nick on hosel, PW has rusty wear on sole but plenty of grooves still. As I said I’m thinking of practicing quite a bit with these this winter in the simulator. Couldn’t hurt to improve ball striking correct?? Especially considering my normal gaming irons are Taylormade Speedblades. Quite a bit smaller room for error on JNP’s. I bring up experiment also cuz I’m toying with the idea of lengthening these an inch too match my TM irons length wise and also flatten the lies for added length. Obviously way higher lofts and way less MOI on the JNP’s but just curious how much making them the same physical length would go to closing the distance gap between 1988 and 2014 technology. I could be over thinking this experiment but it’s keeping my mind busy anyways.

A few recent odd pick-ups.

First is Taylormade TD Tour Preferred 2i. Sort of a classic set, certainly innovative set as they featured some of the first hollow irons (the 1i to 4i were hollow). I had a set as a junior, and recently got the 3i-PW for old time's sake, but was on the lookout for a 1i or 2i as well. This one came up for auction cheap and I grabbed it.

 

Next up is a putter that I don't know much about but suspect it's made by Richard O'Hara, who made the American Classics persimmon woods that looked a lot like the Wood Bros persimmons (and I think he got sued by Wood Bros as well). Anyway, it rolls nicely and it was cheap. Basically an Ironmaster-style putter.

 

And finally, a Mizuno wedge I'm pretty excited to get. It's made from an aluminium bronze alloy, and came out at the end of the Eighties. The Tour Proven stampings shows it was a European release, and I don't think they ever sold this wedge in Japan. As I bought in here in Japan, someone must have "reverse imported" it at some stage. The 522 on the hosel refers to loft (52*), and I think the second "2" refers to head shape as I believe there's a 521 head as well.

Not sure I have the need for a 52* wedge in my classic sets, as almost all my PW are set at 50*, but we'll see.

Just tell the truth. They are pieces of art that were saved from destruction by a kind and wise man who gifted them to you because he knew that you also have a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and it would go against nature for you not to accept them.

They were followed a couple of years later by a 911 model, but I don't think any more Craft Model irons came after that, though there may have been some woods. I do have a 951 Craft Model driver, which I've posted before but will also post here. 

 

A full set would have included a 3i and SW, and a 2i was also offered, though I've never seen an 893 2i come up for auction. The 911 featured a gap wedge between the PW and SW. Specs for the 893 are hard to find, but it seems that the PW was either 48* or 49*, going down to a 21* 3i. 5* gaps between the PW and 9i, and 9i and 8i, then oddly a 3* gap between the 8i and 7i.

 

When I got them, I could see the lofts were strong and the lies really really weak. I adjusted them so I'm starting with a 49* PW, then going down in 4* increments to the 4i. Lies I bent strong for me. The 57* lie on the 7i was completely unplayable for me! Weidly, the lies on the 6i and 5i were more upright than the 7i.

 

Anyway, these were, I am pretty sure, a Japan-only release, and represent some of Mizuno's finest design and workmanship from their golden age. S25C steel with a pearl-stain finish. Pretty pleased to have them.

Lovely irons and a stunning wood. 😍 Don't believe I have ever seen these before so guess very few leaked away from their home market. Grain on the wood is beautiful with very even growth rings focusing right on the nose.

I agree on the " golden era" comment. They say nothing feels like Mizuno but my experience is the older they are the softer they are. I rank my sets in order of softness as MS11, TP9, MP14 and MP32 which also pretty much their chronology.
