*pics added - nearly complete* Deal? 2013 Anser driver $20

I bought just about the ugliest driver I've ever seen today from PGA Superstore today. Someone went a bit crazy with some sand paper and a can of flat black spray paint on an Anser driver and I took a chance on it priced at 19.99 from the used rack. PX 7c3 shaft.

 

There was an easy 1-2mm of blackout spray paint on this thing and the plastic weight thing on the back of the sole is mangled beyond belief, but otherwise it appears to be fine... I stripped the sole of the paint and just put a coat of stripper on the crown to get the rest of the gunk off so we'll see.

 

I'm guessing someone tried to do a custom paint job and screwed it up, and then just said " 'F' it, I'll just shoot it with a coat of paint after each round and at least it won't distract me..."

 

either way $20 seems like a deal, right?

 

 

 

 

 

**EDIT: This was my first attempt at painting anything aside from walls in my house, and I'm about finished. I took these pics last weekend and have just not had time to upload them until now. I was not expecting anything decent, but I am fairly pleased with how it turned out. Still need to find a good clear coat, a new weight plug, and do paint fill where needed.**

Sounds like a deal if it's real. What if the guy hates the poor paint job on a counterfeit and decided to fix it up himself and end up with that monster look *grin*

exactly!

I'll post pics in a few, but I don't imagine that it is going to be easy to compare... I certainly have never seen a picture of a raw metal anser. I've never seen pics of one with 58 coats of paint either if you're wondering why I didn't take BEFORE pics

almost all of the spray paint is gone. what is left is the original paint that was never sanded off - more or less...

Sounds like a deal to me. Shaft and tip alone are worth well more than $20.

What brand of paint stripper did you use to strip the old paint? I have used CitriStrip but was looking for something more agressive. Thanks and good luck!

Maybe bead blast it and then just cerakote clear, that would be pretty neat looking.

CitriStrip is what I used... It is really weak but doesn't burn my skin when I inevitably get it all over my hands... Works just fine for spray paint though.

I had a pretty bad round today but the anser seems to be pretty forgiving, and for an 8.5* driver (+ setting so 9* assuming the alignment setting goes on the bottom of the hosel) launches really high. The bare metal was pretty distracting on the crown IMO. I think I'll get the rest of the paint and whatever else is left of the color on the sole off and give it a dark satin grey / primer color and seal it... Time is pretty squeezed these days but it seems like a fun project. I do like the head / shaft combo.

Now, in order to give that driver new life I would urge that you get one of the artisans on here to do something REALLY special to/with it. That poor driver is like the abused pup that someone adopted. Show it a loving new home and it will be loyal for years to come. You get that baby refinished like no other driver in the world and it will end up being in your bag for a long time to come.

Perhaps your favorite sports team colors? Or a nice matte finish with some highlights.

Just be sure to continue to post updates and pics. This is an amazing find in my book and I would enjoy seeing the details as you bring it back to life.

Well done! The paint scheme with the silver in the middle reminds me of the original Never Compromise putters! They were ahead of the curve with alignment aids.

thanks guys, will probably have it finished tomorrow. I've never been big on sight lines, but I'm pretty sure I've added at least 50 mph to the clubhead speed so far.

Not my cup of tee (I both like the design and metallic/flake in the paint, yet not sure if it pleases my eye at the same time, haha), but the paint job/technique looks top notch! Very nice.

How did you get the nice even, and very sudden yet gentle, fade of blue into black at the back of the head? Is it how you apply the paint, or how you take it away (acetone/thinner)?

Again, the different layers and overall finish look very professional. Kudos! Now go enjoy that bad boy.

No kidding, I've been coming back to look at it again every so often as it looks very well done, and just saw where Dbo said it's his first time really painting anything other than his walls. Gotta respect the quality/finish even more after that.

You definitely put some elbow grease into this one and paid attention to details. Is that all spray can then Dbo?

Yea I don't know if I will be able to play it with the giant stripes lol... I've seen all kinds of car shows on TV where they make painting stripes and patterns look so easy I just wanted to see if I could do it. The back is just a few coats of auto primer, and I left it like that and then free hand sprayed the top with a few coats of blue. This gave it the fade without a definite line, which was my goal as I knew that if I taped it off I would have screwed it up somewhere along that line and it would look crappy.
