Zinger came on New York ESPN radio yesterday afternoon with Michael Kay the Yankees announcer and started with his plug that he could fix tiger in 10 minutes, then admitted he could not. Next he transitioned into the 3 fundamentals: 1-impact 2 and 3-lower body related and left the listeners hanging for details and Michael Kay wondering why he booked him to be on the show. Went on forever that he could and would fix tiger never to hook and that was the problem and solution. Missing left being the cardinal sin. Hey zinger what about the double cross pull when trying to hit a cut, never seen that before?

Ughhh, when a teacher says "impact" is a "secret" it just shows they don't understand the difference between the "what" and the "how". Sure, certain impact dynamics are better than others, but if a club is moving 100 mph through the impact zone, teaching someone HOW to get there is considerably more difficult than just saying what the "impact" show be. It's like saying "I have the secret to golf: drive it at least 300 in the fairway every time, then hit a good iron shot to the middle of the green, then two putt." Sure, if someone followed those instructions, they'd be pretty good, BUT HOW DO YOU DO THAT????

I would be very interested to hear what Azinger has to say. After all, he was a great ball striker, one of the longest hitters of his time, incredible matchplayer against the likes of Faldo and Seve, and did it all with a very unconventional swing and grip, all while not being a stand out junior or college player. I love his instruction on Golf Academy, although he is not, at times, the greatest at conveying his message via the spoken word. I would love to have his swing and ball flight. His book back in the 90's was pretty interesting too. Just my opinion, but I prefer player instruction over the "hottest" swing Guru,(Foley!!)

Having watched a lot of swing videos from the 20's to today - one fundamental consistent to all would be impact position. After that, who knows? Start of the back swing and the start of the down swing???
I'll have to watch older videos and see what else is common to all - could help my swing get better.

The most overlooked one, but pretty obvious, is balance. You won't see a single tour pro lose balance during a swing. If that isn't one of his (Azinger's) fundamentals, then I wouldn't take the others seriously.

Yeah. 'Impact position' isn't a fundamental, it's an outcome. Just the same as hitting the centre of the club face isn't a fundamental, it's an outcome.

Well that would explain my better ball striking since I began focusing on balance this weekend. Okay, impact position is a outcome. Then other than balance which results in a controlled swing and a solid grip, are there any true fundamentals for golf?

On the topic of Tiger separating from Foley, Azinger had some pretty strong remarks going back a few months. In a few articles and radio spots he's talked about studying all the great swings and there being only 3 fundamentals - though he won't divulge this information to the public, only to the select few students he's teaching. I did a quick search and it doesn't look like anyone's been able to root this info out (figure it's only a matter of time). Does anyone have anything? Here's a quick peak at what i'm talking about...

"Most of what today’s instructors call fundamentals are really fingerprints, so unique to the individual that you could show their swings in silhouette and easily identify them. There are only three timeless fundamentals that every player in the Hall of Fame, from Willie Park and Harry Vardon to Phil Mickelson and Fred Couples, did consistently. And I only reveal those to my students."

Does Azinger give a free set of steak knives with these fundamentals?

 • 10 months later...

Azinger mentioned it today (Saturday) while chatting with Mike Tirico on ESPN. They were trying to fill time during the wind delay.
I cannot quote the 3 keys verbatim, but it involved right hip pocket facing target during backswing, forward shaft lean at impact, and the 3rd had to do with left pocket at finish. Perhaps someone recorded it and can transcribe. It was between 10:00 and 11:30 in the morning on the east coast.
So, the gist of it was that all great players looked the same in their lower body motion, but were fingerprints otherwise.

He said the only three things all great golfers have in common is that their left pocket moves away from the target in the backswing, their right pocket moves towards the target, and that at impact they are all similar with forward shaft lean. Besides that, he said swings are like a fingerprint and each golfer has their own.
