Is the Ping G30 driver playing true to stated loft, or does one need to have it digitally lofted?

I am looking at getting the new G30 driver, but I am debating whether or not to order directly from the Ping WRX dept and get a digitally lofted head, or save $100 and get one off the bay. Ping has been notorious in the past for putting out drivers that were

1-2* higher in loft than actually stamped. I do not want a 10.5* driver that is stamped 9* as I tend to hit the ball high. What is the overall consensus on the G30 line??? Is it prudent to get the digitally lofted head and pay the $15 charge or has everyone been seeing the heads play pretty true to loft?

while this thread is pretty difficult to answer because I suspect few OTS buyers of the G30 are going to bother to take their heads in to have them accurately measured after purchase, I will say that in relative terms my 9 degree head "felt" like it launched like a 9 degree head of old, given what I expected out of a its stock mid-launching shaft. I had to stick a high launching shaft in it and dial it up a degree to get mine up to satisfactory.

I can only give you a comparative, relative measurement based on other heads I've tried and of course they are all influenced by their shaft combinations etc.

For example: Optiforce 460 at 10.5 felt like 12, Optiforce 440 at 9.5 felt like 9.5, SLDR at 12 felt like 10, SLDR at 9.5 felt like 7.5 or 6.5, BBA with core down felt like 7.0, with core up felt like 9.0. Jetspeed felt about equal to its stated loft.

It's all relative to your swing and shaft. The new G30 does adjust more than the old one and the adjuster tip does work, so give it a go with the 9.

I do,understand the dilemma. I wasn't prepared to take a chance so when I placed my pre-order, I ended up requesting a 9 digitally lofted. My order took 6 weeks even though I ordered 2 days after Ping announced the G30 . The reason given for the delay was that they didn't have the manpower to search through heads during the launch process!

If they didn't have time to digitally loft on intro, it would suggest to me that finding a head true to spec or what's stamped on the sole is a long shot.

If loft accuracy is important, ordering is the only way to insure accuracy. After playing Titleist and Ping drivers exclusively for the last 10 years, I would take a chance with Titleist, never again will I blindly buy a Ping driver without having it digitally lofted.

On a side note, the G30 is fabulous. Good luck!

What's the highest loft request that can be made for a 10.5* stamped G30 head? Could you have one stamped 10.5* and have it digitally lofted to 13*?

Why would you want to do this out of curiously?

I think the G30 heads are pretty close to stated loft. It also depends if you want the head open or closed at address. If you like a closed driver get the 9 and if you open it up get the 10.5. This is just an example.

Because they only make a 12* in the draw biased/SF Tec version. I want a standard G30 head with a 12*-13* loft when set in the neutral position. Not looking or wanting to see the face closed or open at address...just neutral and square with the desired loft.

Here is the question I have. You demo a 10.5 driver and it is perfect. What do you order? If you are worried that a 10.5 driver is really a 12, how do you know what the loft of the demo was? Unless your demoing a digitally lofted demo, you don't have a clue. And if you do happen to know the exact number you need, spend the 100 bucks and call it a day.

I used a G30 10.5 last Tuesday for 18 holes and thought it launched LOWER for me. I was comparing it to an i20 10.5.
[/quote]

I found the same thing. My 10.5" G30 had a lower ball flight in the neutral setting than my G25 did. I moved the G30 up 1* to 11.5* and while you might think it would hit moon balls, it really didn't. If the head was a little closed with the added loft I couldn't really see it. In any case, the ball fight is about perfect and it hits very straight, so no complaints here.

I totally agree with this statement... I caved in the face of a I25 10.5 degree head. ive caved only 1 other driver in and it was using Night Golf Balls. I think they make the faces thinner.

  • 1 month later...

Just want to add something to this older thread as it seems relevant..

I ordered a Ping G30 10.5° with Tour 65 xstiff driver from TGW.com that they said would be drop shipped from Ping, so I decided to have it digitally lofted to 10.5°, well it finally arrived today, it's got multiple notes stating "Digital Loft Confirmed 10.5°".. on the work slip and my copy of the receipt, etc... it's a 9° head..since I was impatient while waiting for it to come I purchased a G30 9° driver with an upgraded shaft from a trusted member on here.. I can tell that with my untrained eye the lofts between them definitely looks higher on the digitally lofted one..

Just thought I would mention my experience..

Also.. the digital lofting was $10.00 for me as well..
