What's the most you would spend on a putter?

Cruising ebay for putters, we all do it. Most of us have that number in our head we won't go over. I fought hard for weeks to get one particular putter at a certain price point simply because I refused to go over $500. I use to not go over $300 then it moved to $400 lol. Any simliar stories?

I suppose it depends on the putter. I have no issue getting a good value when I purchase. I would definitely pay more for a custom putter built to my specs than an OTR. A putter in the mid-ish 4 figures or higher is more than I probably would want to pay. So far I have not paid that.

we talking actual cash or swaps? if its cashola then $200 is my limit of comfort...trades...well I have a Newport dual balance im not sold on, and that was $399......May try swapping it for something more expensive...Ill add my $200 cap and wala....I know I know..somehow somewhere I paid money to get into the trades, but when its spread out and you trade up a few times it sure seems less painful than a $700 putter at once.... If I paid straight out for a $700 putter and it didn't roll putts in id be sick....just don't think I could do it

I first said that I wouldn't spend more than $300....then I said, I'd only buy putters I'd game....then I bought my 2009 ICC Napa and all bets were off.

I have never spent over 200 bucks, although the wife has given preliminary approval to get a custom Tom Slighter putter for Christmas.

That would be over 500 bucks, which is a tough pill to swallow.

Its funny how the putter has this weird view in most our minds though. Nobody wants to spend any money on putters because you can (and probably have) used cheap ones with success before.

We'll spend 500 in a New York minute on a driver I might hit 6 or 8 times in a round, but a Putter that gets 30+ every time we go out cant be expensive, LOL.

If I can find a putter for 40-50% of the retail price I take a hard look at it. I know it is not a dollar amount but.... well for instance I needed a putter while I am trying to sell my Betti BB5 so I found a brand new Never Compromise Sub 30 Type 10 for $40. And to be honest, after having to use it during rainy weather rounds I putted quite well with it and wonder why I want to pay for a Byron...lol But I know the answer to that. But the Betti sits unsold so I am using the NC for good now since I know with every round comes the chance of dings or dents or oops.

I've been selling off some other putters and such, saving up for a byron. As i always say, this will be my last putter. And like you guys, my max price continues to go up. Good thing there arent as many LH putters out there. I hope to find a used DH89 ~ 4-500 range, but if not ill be forced to blow about 600 on a brand new one.

I have paid $600 for a custom putter in the past that I unfortunately made absolutely nothing with. That being said, if I could get a custom Byron or Betti that rolls as well as my current $200 putter, I would be willing to pay maybe $1k.....maybe

Wow, you guys are blowing me away with these numbers. I have 2 putters that I currently play that I paid a total of $30 for, granted I got lucky with one. My wife's uncle gave me a Newport 2 bc he "couldn't make anything with it", mind you he has about 20 different SC's. The other is a TM Manta that I got off ebay for $20 plus shipping, and I thought long and hard about even bidding that much lol.

Just a question, how much did you pay for your last driver ? (asking this as I see alot of people that have your reasoning, which I can totally understand as I had the same at one point before I joined here lol, but that pay 500$ for a driver and don't give it a second thought)

My point is I hit a driver max 18times per rounds vs a putter(I'd rather not say I hate my white hot atm) at 36+putts per round so my mentality is now opposing to these type of guys. I'd much rather spend 500 on a putter that is; 1. more like art 2. gets alot more usage per round 3. can be customised for fairly cheap 4.doesnt lose as much value; than I would on a 500$ driver.

Example just got a used machine m2a for 275 shipped and am looking into a custom putter for next year(probably lajosi). I also just bought a driver(used) for 115$ for a razr fit xtreme with px6.0 shaft I love my new/used driver but the putter thats on its way keeps me up at night(I feel lonely without it lol)

Just perception and what is important to you(I suffer a lot more from crap putting than driving the ball in the woods)

Edit: I assume the SC is an off the rack and not custom but doesn't really matter, how much do you think your uncle paid for it, defeats the purpose a bit when family gives it to you. A used car dealers son will never consider buying an expensive used car as he can get the same or better for family pricing(not the ideal example but hopefully you catch my drift)

It depends on what I am buying it for and I don't mean collecting. But for a gamer my max price is way lower than what I might spend on one for other superfical or sentimental reasons.

For a gamer...$2-$300 is for sure the max and I believe one need not spend anywhere near that in the vast majority of cases. I've played just as well with putters around $100 or less.

True but since putting is based a lot on the mental I find a custom/nice putter can definitely make a difference in confidence and therefore improve your abilities by improving your confidence.(Get the same models and give on a nice traditional look and the other a fcked up finish with hard edges and graphs everywhere) and you may find yourself putting much better with the nice looking one simply beacause it fits your eye better and boosts your confidence which in turn = more putts holed(Just my opinion on this though and I get it can vary for someone who really doesn't give a f*ck what he is looking at).

I paid $675 for my Byron and that is the ceiling for me. I am actually going to sell it too shortly. I probably won't pay that in the future again either. I think my Edel's and Low Tide were both under $400. But the putter in my bag is less than $150 Ping Anser milled.

To quote Lee Trevino, "it ain't the arrows; it's the Indian." A custom fitted, machined $1000 putter is not going to make a bad putter into a good putter. it possibly could make a very good putter into a great putter.
But if you have a bad stroke, bad optics, or are unable to read greens, you cannot buy your way to being a really good putter.

Have I ever owned $500-$1000 putters? Yep. more than a few. Probably before most of you guys were born. mostly buy and try, only to revert back to my Armour IMG 5 or 6 .Back in the Classic/vintage club heyday, I can recall really "making a steal[size=4]" on a Sportsman Geo. Low Wizard 600 for $575 only to realize it was highly over-rated and was only "worth the money" because Jack putted with one. [/size][i](IMO.[/i][size=4]He is probably the only guy in the world who ever putted terrifically with a Wizard). The good news: sold it 90 days later and made $600 on it.[/size]
Wilson Designed by Arnold Palmer at $600. Why not? It's only money. Truly was and is a great putter. But so was the following year's 8802 ; identical club made from the same amalgam for about half the money. Besides, Greg Norman used one once. I Still own a couple.
Mid 1960's Scottsdale Anser. They supposedly sold for over a grand for awhile.(Not to me, thank god.) Because , among others, Seve , used one rather well.

Just because someone you know, or some super star putts with a particular putter, does not mean it will work for you. As Fumanchu mentioned earlier in this thread, the club must fit you "visually". Your minds eye has to like it.Then it has to feel right. But if you don't get those parts of the equation worked out,IMO, no amount of "custom" machining is gonna help very much.
