The hype and build up of the presidents cup is just as intense as Ryder cup. If you're Phil Mickelson or some other top player and you play your a** off all season chasing majors/wins then along comes the presidents or Ryder cup you're kidding yourself if you don't think these guys half dread it. They don't make a dime from it and probably would be a lot more into it if it came every other year.

Think about it - the first presidents cup was 1994. Compare the us record pre 94' to since then. It's absolutely sapped the US enthusiasm for these type of events. To have to gear up for these every year is too much to ask.

I wouldn't miss the President's cup one bit if it went away but I don't really see how it is a grind on the players. It is just one weekend of golf and the vibe is very carefree.

The ryder cup seems fine... all the US needs to do is play better.

And as Phil so sarcastically pointed out, they don't lose because of bonding and other ridiculous theories they claim the Euros do (while in litigation). They play better that week more often than the US does in recent years.

How do you get a team to peak for a couple of days? There's no way to predict it or force it to happen.

You get them to peak by not taking advantage of them and overworking them. Say what you want about how important the presidents cup is to you but the media hype and pressure is no different than the Ryder cup.

Remember all the media hype with spieth and the presidents cup last year? It's no different man.

Yes they want to play in the Ryder cup but they would Be far more amped up if they hadn't just gone through the same pressure cooker a year earlier. Reed is case and point. He has the fire now but the presidents cup bs will dump a cold pail of water on it eventually.

The US needs to suck it up and buy some more comfortable panties if playing 1 additional team event per 2 years is creating issues for them. Besides, don't they normally win the Presidents Cup? Wouldn't that boost their confidence as a team?

The Masters, Players, US Open, The Open, PGA and Fed Ex Cup playoffs are way more pressure than the President's Cup and all of those events are in between the President's Cup and Ryder Cup. Should we cancel all of those as well? I don't think the President's has anything to do with our struggles, by the time the Ryder Cup rolls around again it will be way in the past.

If you want to fix the Ryder Cup, give more importance to players that are playing well at the time of the Ryder Cup. No more using captains picks on guys just because a certain player that has already qualified wants to play with that person or because they have all this experience(mostly experience with losing). Either they are playing well enough to earn spot or they don't make it at all. It shouldn't be that difficult.

I can think of a way to grab the attention of the US players...

The Euro team plays for the booz... simple minded folks. The US needs financial incentive.

I don't know why nobody raises this point but if you want the USA to win more Ryder cups the solution is easy.

[s]GET RID OF THE PRESIDENTS CUP!!!!![/s] FED EX CUP PLAYOFFS

European players play the Ryder Cup every two years. The US players will now have to lumber through another meaningless [s]Presidents Cup [/s]Fe Ex Cup playoff with the same amount of media hype and bs scrutiny as the Ryder Cup.

End the [s]Presidents[/s] Fed Ex Cup and you will see a whole new passion from US team because they won't be as burned out from endless team competitions.

Simple as that but it won't be done because the PGA makes too much money from the presidents cup and oh by the way gives none of it to the players.

Fixed it for ya

If the presidents cup ceased to exist I don't think many of us would miss it.

It would make the ryder cup more special. I wouldn't mind sacking the pres cup and having the RC every 3, or even 4 years. Not for player fatigue or anything, just to make it more in line with how much they hype it up.

The whole idea of the presidents cup was to let the rest of the wold experience a team golf event... blame Norman on pushing this thing on everyone. Honestly, I don't think anyone playing in the president cup cares...

In the spirit of this thread... STOP captains picks. Earn your way onto the team... maybe it will mean a little more, and certainly will spice things up a bit.

I think that Europe should play The Rest of the World next year. They earned it.

The US can play The Rest of the World in 2017.

Believe what you want but if a US player goes out in the Presidents Cup and consistently loses we will all be reminded endlessly of their "Presidents Cup Win/Loss Record" during TV coverage.

The point is these guys can't dog it at that event wether it's more pressure or not they have to show up and if they only had to do it every other year they'd be a lot more charged up to kick some a**.

The Ryder Cup isn't broken. Europe starting to win "fixed" it, and now the US has to respond. The Presidents' Cup was the PGA Tour's attempt to make the top international players like Norman, Price, Elkington, Singh, Els, etc. not feel like second class citizens. The hype and pressure surrounding it is nothing compared to the Ryder Cup. It is truly an exhibition match , whereas the Ryder Cup has become a knock-down, drag-out brawl. We Americans would do well to stop believing that players and partnerships that do well in the P-Cup will automatically translate to the Ryder Cup. The two being comparable might be what the Tour would like, but they're light years apart, and will continue to be as long as the US continues to dominate it. If, one day, the International team starts to have the success the Europeans have had the past twenty years, than, perhaps, the two events may have an impact on one another, as it could be argued that the US has a disadvantage competing in each every year. However, we're a long ways from that being the case.

Disagree. It's not like it's hard for them to get geared up for Augusta....and that's every year - A 3-day team competition on an annual basis is not the reason we struggle in the Ryder Cup...

The reason we struggle is two-fold....1) Europe has gotten a lot better/deeper in the past several decades....and 2) I have a gut feeling that the competition still means a bit more to them than it does to us...

I would love to see:

Year 1 president cup is played US v World
Year 2 Winner of President cup plays defending Ryder Cup champ (Euros)
Year 3 Loser of of Ryder Cup plays year 1 loser of Presidents Cup
Year 4 repeat

The Ryder Cup would be the premier world golf event (it already is) and the Presidents Cup would be the qualifier.

It would never happen of course, not because of the history of the events, but becuase this would risk the US not being in the mix and TV stations would not like that.
