First ever fitting - Club Champion @ Rockville, MD

Recommended Posts

Guys - let me start this off by saying i have read the other threads looking for reviews for these fellas over at Club Champion (DC) in Rockville, MD. So, can fully understand if the mods want to merge this with another thread.

I wanted to post a thread to get some insights from those golfers who've been fit by CC and who are in my handicap range to see what kind of progression they've seen SINCE switching over to the properly fitted clubs.

I'll tell you guys a little bit about myself -

I'm 29, play 3-4x a week and hit balls in the winter almost 4-5x a week. my current handicap is a +0.3 and haven't ever (and i mean EVER) been professionally fitted for clubs in my life. i've been playing since i was 6, took a few years off of 'serious' golf while in HS and college due to being a baseball pitcher with a chance to get to the minors/pros. That was till my shoulder went bye bye. after graduating back in '07 from college, i took a few years off of sports to clear my head and realized i needed to get my competitive spirit out somehow - so i went back to golf. it's been 3 years or so since i started taking it VERY seriously. i've yet to take a formal lesson from a PGA pro, although i know many who've given me a tip or two along the way.

back to fitting - when it comes to fitting i've been kinda doing the WRX thing - "buy, then try" method. i'm 6'3", 225 and athletic. my original set of PING iSi-K irons was white dot (at the suggestion of my now, 84 year old grandfather who still plays PING eye2's, green dot)...after tinkering a little the last couple years - i'm into the set i have now (these are STD length, STD lie - at least that's how i bought them):

D: SLDR 460 10.5* head set to 8* w/ UST Chrome 6F5T

3W: 910Fd 15* w/ PX (blue) -8C4 stiff

3i-PW: 2014 MC w/ PX 6.5 (nonflighted)

Wedges: SM4/TVD w/ X100 in gap, S400 in sand/lob

Putter(s): SC studio style newport 2 w/ gss insert / PING anser 2 stainless

My current stats are like this for my last 10 rounds (per golfshot) and my apologies for the blurry-ness -

stats23Oct2014_zps73dd69f5.png

i have all the hopes in the world that the fitting will go well and i'll be fitted correctly - i'm just hoping that i can get some improvement in a few areas:

1) hit more fairways with the driver (my distances have never been an issue)

2) hit more greens with the irons from distances greater than 170 yards

3) get closer with approach shots under 170 yards

4) make more putts - i know my average is decent (sub 31/rd) - but i have days where i'm lights out, and others where nothing goes in

have any of you out there who've been fitted dropped significant strokes? i feel as though if i can get rid of a couple more i will be on a level (and have the confidence) to compete seriously within my state (NJ) tournaments with better chances to win.

I know, some may bring up the mental aspect of the game, course management, swing portion of the equation - but for now lets keep this to fitting.

any/all insight on the fitting, my stats, my game, anything really - would be phenomenal. much appreciated...

13 Nov 2014 update:

Here's what I initially posted before the fitting (i have answers to some of these, not all):

"I wanted to post some goals here to hold myself too and also give some direction for the fitting other than 'oh just get fitted and buy it', as well as get answers to these questions/topics in my fitting -

Driver -

1) determine based on my ss what is considered optimal launch/spin/ballspeed/AoA/carry/total numbers for me

2) determine, based on the fitting, what my predominant swing flaw may be - ie too much in/out or out/in, etc.

3W -

1) find one that works, and why i can't seem to find one that works well for me in the first place

2) determine based on my ss what is considered optimal launch/spin/ballspeed/AoA/carry/total numbers for me

Irons -

1) find out how grinds can help/hurt my turf interaction (current sticks vs. fitted sticks) and determine which setup is optimal for me, across different conditions

2) find out the correct grip size, shaft length, loft, lie for irons as i've always been a 'just try it' golfer

Wedges -

1) determine which setup is best for me, to include grinds, wedge shafts (including flex) as well as grind options best suited for me

Putter -

1) see real #'s and get correlation to type of putter, changes in loft, lie, length and their overall effect on an outcome"

Here's the start of the review (3 parts - missing some Trackman/SAM Putting Lab numbers from Buddha):

Part 1 of my review (as I don’t have trackman numbers from Buddha yet); this will be short teaser -

The man, the myth, the Buddha:

Let me start this off right and just say thank you to the guys over at CC. Both Buddha and Matt were incredible fitters, very friendly, and genuine guys through and through. Dave (butters) and I got there early, about 11:45 for our 12:30 fitting…so we were greeted, told we could have a seat, a drink if we wanted it or otherwise hangout till the fitting started. We filled out paperwork (admin stuff) to document what we were looking for from the fitting, current handicap, times played each week/month, etc. From there, we paired off and started our fitting. Buddha asked me to warm up with my 6i and he was going to watch me, see how my swing worked, and check out my equipment. After I was warm, he was standing by my bag telling me what we were going to fix –

Buddha: “well, those wedges aren’t going to work as they're a bit light…and the uh…wait, who’s 3W is this?”

Me: “lol…mine?”

Buddha: “ha…yea, not anymore lol the driver might be the only club in the bag that’s close to fitting you right now…lets get to work”

Part 2 - the fitting:

Trackman1_zps13a2b1f3.png

TrackmanSummary_zpsfe37d7af.png

Buddha first had me hit the MC head with different shafts to find the correct shaft first, then finding the right head, then adjusting/tweaking lie angle. i hit (in this order) the KBS Tour X, KBS Tour V X, C Taper X, C Taper Lite X, Modus 3 120 X...only to find the Modus 3 120 X was phenomenal for my swing.

next was the heads - i went from the MC directly to the ping S55. had some good numbers but, went on to the Miura 1957, again, good numbers but we pushed on. then i went to the Vapor PC. good numbers but was hard to tell how they'd all stack up since i hit them one-by-one and not side-by-side. i feel bad letting you guys know which ones i picked already but, here is the raw data.*note, the alternative shafts were removed from the data as well as the PING S55's.

Now onto the driver portion of the fitting (please note, i will be returning to CC at some point over the winter to be fitted for a 3W or a long hybrid, as well as wedges). i hit my SLDR with chrome 6F5T shaft (my gamer) first, then i moved onto an SLDR paired with an Accra Tour 70 X flex. that proved to be a friggin 6x6. waaaaayyy to stiff, virtually no load or softness to the shaft whatsoever. Buddha told me that he had seen enough of the SLDR. time for the 915D3 in 8.5* loft. First we tried it with the Diamana B Series 70 Stiff flex. night and day difference to the SLDR in many ways, including ball flight (dropping the apex about 20' or so, since this is one of my issues with all clubs - serious height). proved to be very consistent and first possible contender. then we went to the Veylix Rome 688 in Stiff flex. all i can say is WOW. dispersion was great if only just a shade left. Buddha told me that we could tune it later on to bring the same dispersion back to the middle with an adjustment via the adapter. he was incredibly honest and told me that with all the new nike drivers coming out - he was OK with fitting me in a 915D3 w/ veylix however, he would like to see me hit the nike drivers with the veylix in it and see if we can't get better performance.

Below is the SAM Putting Lab results - they show that my gamer putter - SC Studio Style w/ GSS insert, 330g, std lie, 35" was not the correct fit for me. it wasn't heavy enough, long enough, nor upright enough for me. also, the balance (45* toe hang) was wrong - i needed a mallet, face balanced putter. the gamer was causing me to have a closed face at address as well as a pull type stroke to offset the toe hang. here ya go boys:

First, I hope your fitting is with Buddha because he has been great with most of our MD WRXers.

Now with that being said, you know your swing/game better than any of us. So, go into the fitting with the idea you don't have to hit every ball perfect. A fitter needs to see your best and worst. Your tendencies will show what way a proper fitting will improve your game.

Lastly, be ready to sweat and hit balls. Take your time between shots and swing like your normally do. Good luck!

Smart. Whole bag fitting? If so, make sure you warm up but don't over do it because you will hit plenty of balls. And be ready to see every shaft you have only read about on here...it is glorious.

If you have a budget just let him know ahead of time, so yall can find what shaft is inline with that.

The fitting shouldn't fix this or that but it should make your misses less severe and good shots more accurate, IMO!

Yup - whole shabang. I've already heard horror stories about the cost of these guys so, i'm not in sticker shock lol I WILL however be asking Buddha to give me some options price-wise that will get me similar performance. i'm also very interested in the SAM putting fitter. can't wait to try that out and see how consistent or inconsistent my putting stroke is.

The SAM is awesome and Buddha knows his stuff. However, I would recommend that whatever putter you are fitted that you have a chance to hit another 7 putts with it. So, you see if it improves this or that, you know?

Be pumped about it but don't psyche you self out. Also, when your hitting into the screen, imagine your favorite hole or one that you play a lot. This will allow to mentally picture a real hole and not a screen.

I was talking to a guy who was fitted at Club Champion up here in Philadelphia. They built him an SLDR with a Kiyoshi Black and knicked him for 890$. He told me this story because he had won a gift certificate there for 700$ and was very happy that he had only paid 270$ for the club..... You should definitely get ready for some sticker shock with this outfit.....

if sticker shock gets WAAAY outta hand - i do know a professional club builder (certified lvl 3) who could help me get the clubs to the same specs as CC without the gouging.

Anytime man. I did the SAM fitting there and didn't hit another 7 putts because I got caught up in the fitting.

The price...hmmmm that's for you to decide man. I know they get stuff directly from the OEM shafts, etc. then they do the extra little things spin/aligned and they are covered 100% by them for issues.

Two things for me helped dropped a lot of strokes.

Lessons and getting properly fitted with the correct shafts for my irons. I was playing S300 in my old set of Razr X and getting tons of roll out. After 3 fittings I decided on the G25 with stock stiff shaft , which dramatically decrease my roll out with all of my irons. So, I was holding more greens instead of rolling off.

The putter fitting is another thing that I feel has improved my consistency and made my misses less severe. However, if you put a bad swing on anything there is no fitting that will save that.

What do you want out of this fitting? It is not a magic thing that will make you do this or that but it should improve your misses, accuracy, and consistency. Just be honest with Buddha and tell him what you are looking for with these fittings.

what was your handicap prior to fitting? after?

i want to do the following (in the original post):

1) hit more fairways with the driver (my distances have never been an issue)
2) hit more greens with the irons from distances greater than 170 yards
3) get closer with approach shots under 170 yards

i want to shave 2-3 more strokes off my average, if not more. i know swing is a big part of it and that's being worked on as well - i was hoping to see if the clubs/fitting produced a direct result for any lowering of scores by those who've been to club champion.

When I was fitted for a 3hyb, I followed the fitter's advice 100%. The club was a perfect fit, but I lost confidence in it after about 25 rounds, when I hit it long and right on a critical hole. After that, it had to go.

When I was fitted for some iron shafts, I did not heed the advice of the very experienced fitter, and went with a certain flex straight in (my call), versus the hardstep with minor tipping he recommended. I played a few rounds, was lost with a two way miss and jettisoned the shafts hoping someone else could put them to better use.

If you trust the fitter, and get a good vibe that he's giving you the right information, go with whatever he says, and shows you is the best fit. Buy in to it. You have to mentally buy in. If you don't, you will waste the session, the fitting and all the cash you blow chasing something you don't believe in.

A buddy of mine hated his driver, and I gave him a 910D3 8.5* with a Project X 7A3 in it. He didn't want an X-flex shaft, and he thinks the 7A3 is an "S+" but clearly the reason he missed was because he could overload the stiff he was playing in his 983k. He was killing the 910D3 after the first driver on the range, and I always made sure to build him up about that driver. Every single time. Even during range sessions. He believes in that driver combo so much that he can do whatever he likes with it, whenever. It is a rare, rare site to see him mis-hit it. He believes in it. I followed that up with a 712 AP1 3i that he kills as well. Same deal as above. He believes in them both, and kills them both.

Never kept a handicap but I was always low 90 to mid as well as 100. After lessons and a fitting I shoot 80-85s and have a handicap of a 7.6 but got it down to a 6.3.

Well, the game of golf comes down to putting and chipping. So, with a proper fitting I could see you dropping those strokes. I say this because your lies in your irons/wedges could be off, which are causing certain tendencies. Also, shaft weight could increase your accuracy in a driver or maybe a completely different driver head.

Lastly, the putter, which you will see what you are doing right/wrong. I think this will be great for your game and psyche.

so you're saying its not necessarily the club is a perfect fit but rather confidence in a given club? while i believe this...i think the fitting should be carrying more weight than confidence...no?

They go hand and hand. If you know your equipment is fitted for you then there is no excuses. However, if they aren't then you can doubt the equipment and have excuses.

So, yes the fitting will give you the confidence in your equipment. You can't blame the equipment if it is fitted for you...you know?

Completely agree...I feel like we're off topic lol I understand confidence in equipment...but I was hoping for more than "well you will trust it then so, naturally you'll drop scores".

I trust what I have now...and it might not be fit correctly for me...

Let's say you do not believe you should play X flex iron shafts hardstepped in, but the numbers on the monitor, the performance on the range and the empirical data are all there to support those findings. The fitter tells you that X HSx1 is the perfect fit for your game, gives you the best numbers, the Trackman agrees, and your live ball demo bears it out. However, in the back of your mind, you think they are too strong for you, you are concerned about over-swinging to get the results you need, etc, etc, etc.

Do you have the fitter order X flex straight in? Go with S hardstepped? Or S? Or follow the fitters advice, buy in to it, and play the best actual fit for you? The one that produces the best numbers on the board?

If you are going for a fitting, you have to buy in - if you do that, your misses will be smaller. Which should lead to better scores.

That's all I'm saying.

...i've never been fitted. i'm buying into, trusting, whatever you want to call it that the guy giving me the advice...is going to be more correct than i ever could be.

why would you ever NOT trust in your fitter giving you the best tools for your game? seems counter-intuitive since you're paying him/her money to help you...

Nothing is guarantee in life, let alone in golf.

You trust what you have now but you don't know if it is fitted for you. Key words you don't know if they are right for you, so a fitting will show you this information.

Say you miss right all of the time...well crap I needed my irons bent upright or I miss left all of the time then they needed to be flat...bam on the course they fly straighter ...just an example of what a fitting will show you.

Don't over analyze everything and just swing... I think you are starting to do this. Let the fitter tell you the information and use your knowledge to understand it.

lol i'm not over analyzing everything...or anything...

i'm just asking if ppl dropped strokes b/c of their fitting ...not psycho-analysis of confidence, trust in fitters, etc.

it's like gripping a greased up pig in here.

Ok, let's make the example MORE crazy: He fits you in regular flex iron shafts. What's your gut reaction to that? Still buying in? Or are we developing some trust issues?

It's human nature to second guess stuff, so this is easier said then done. I did 3 fittings to ensure what I had was right for me....wife made me promise not to buy new equipment for 3 years, so needed to make sure.

sounds to me like YOU have trust issues.

unless he was literally jokin...there's no way he would/could put me in reg flex. regardless of what he suggests - i will be asking him WHY he believes i fit into X or Y...if the reason is legitimate and reasonable, yes i will take it into consideration...

We are just using our experiences in life and golf to help you. You can over analyze a fitting and your brain will get in the way...trust me. So, take yourself out of the equation and just hit balls like you do at a range.

The fitting will show you stuff and the results will allow you to get better and reach your goals. Lessons will help you even get better.
