Genuine, curious question. Why should we play G irons when the I series are essentially as forgiving now from an MOI perspective as all G irons before the g410s?

Thoughts?

I can only speak for myself but when the courses around here are soft I play my G25's. If it's dry and firm i play my 2007 Callaway X-Forged . For me it's all about bounce.

I traded my G425 in for the I230. Everything improved since the switch. I went back to compare them after I played the I230 for a few months and found for my misses they perform the same and they look and feel a ton better. I personally find the smaller head better for me. My hope is that the new I2XX that come out this year are even smaller heel to toe with the same amount of bounce. It seems the bigger the head the less I stay focused and the bigger my miss is, but I tend to be steep and fat. But if that was not the case I would keep playing the G's as they were great clubs in their own right. Some people prefer a larger face. It gives them comfort on the ball.

Has anyone ordered 440 irons and how long did they take to come in?  my shop told me 2-2.5 weeks to come in which seemed too quick given they are probably slammed with the 440 release and high demand.

I can't comment on the differences in the moi ranking that Maltby provides.  but he shows the G4xx/G7xx irons in the 18-19 pt moi range,

the i5xx in the 15-16 range

and the i2xx in the 14-15 range.

Is 3-5 pts that big of a difference in an iron head?  I can't answer that.  maybe somebody more versed can chime in.

I am in the @Nessism camp of the bigger head confidence that the G's provide.

I have owned 2 sets of i200s, 2 sets of G425s (retro loft and std lofts), 3 sets of G430's (2 sets of graphites, 1 set of steel), 1 set of G700s, 1 set of G Max, 2 sets of 2016 G's, 1 set of G25s, 2 sets of K15s, 1 set of Rapture V2 and 1 set of G400s.  While I shot my personal best -2 68 with the i200s (short 9/normal 9) and my 2nd best score of +1 72 on a normal length course with the G425's, I always tend to come back to the G's.  Just more confident when the swing is really off or rusty in those early March rounds or late season Nov/Dec rds in Ohio.

I am hoping to get off of the iron carousel and ordered me a 6-UW set of 440s.  I could play steel but wanted graphite as I plan to keep these around a long time and I am not getting any younger (turn 49 in May) and have always had a slow swing to begin with.  Actually had my fastest swing speed ever this past year just due to alot of range work reps.

That's impressive!  No one can accuse you of not being a subject matter expert.  Even though I have a set of W/S blades in the bag, which perform well, I am very tempted by these just to see if there is a marked difference in performance.  Recently played T300s in a hire set and really enjoyed the higher ball flight.  Look forward to hearing your thoughts on these.

I had a set of i210 irons with my preferred Steelfiber i110 shafts. They simply were nowhere near as forgiving as a true GI iron like the G series or my current Paradym X (or my co-#1 set TM Qi irons).

Same goes for something like a P790 that I own but will be trading in. Same exact shafts as my Qi irons (MMT 105 S), and they are simply not in the same forgiveness class. Not hard to hit or terribly punitive, but I think I am simply resigned to playing true GI irons going forward.

As soon as the weather warms up in the Northeast, I will 100% be demoing the G440 with every intention of buying a set if they knock it out of the park. My favorite G iron is the G30, and I have played just about all of them. Did not love the G425, and never picked up the G430 (wonky lofts). Looking forward to giving the G440 a go. YMMV.

As someone that’s gone from over a decade of playing g irons to p790s you’re completely right. They just are not as forgiving, but that for me is perfectly fine. My g iron mishits went practically the same distance but left or right. The p790s just go shorter but straighter (for me) on mishits. On my home course that just works better for me, but the G series are superb irons if you just want out and out forgiveness. Our course also can get windy and I find the p790 easier to flight in the wind.

However if the p790s didn’t exist the g430 came a close second in my fitting so I’d have still been playing Gs. I certainly don’t understand those that say the I series is as forgiving, it’s nowhere near..

I found that similar going from G20s to Onoff kuros and even some custom miuras... Just felt like I went backwards, at least for a few rounds. Still getting use to the onoffs and keep thinking about the chunky pings and how they served me so well

See, that's how the sickness grows - just like Mr. Spock used to get during the Vulcan pon farr mating cycle (according to the Amok Time episode): I'm perfectly happy with my G25s, the ideal iron for this particular G-Man, and I tout them constantly as about the very best of the G series irons; but then Pareto shows up with that lovely set of G30s and now I want them too, and I wonder why I never before realized how good they looked and why I've been so stupid... but then suddenly that's not enough for me either, and I find that I wants the G30s but that I now also want the Gs, and plus on top of that I want the G400s too (which I never before today wanted, but now I want them). I'm like Gollum when he finally banishes the last remnants of Smeagol from his soul and psyche and is reduced to the state of a miserably hungry ghost that will be satisfied by nothing except his precious -- an empty aching shell of his former self. If my home course had bigger greens or less trouble at the sides of the greens, the G410s would still be in. But the p790 just suit my game more and my scores have come down as a result.

Yep, thanks for the insight (and confirmation). I used the TM trade-in bonus last season to pick up identical sets of P790 and Qi, same shaft, etc. There were times where I thought the P790 would win out—I love them as an iron. But in the end, for me and my game, the Qi were easier to hit consistently, and gave me better chances to be on or close to the green with my irons. But I can totally see the direction you went as well. Hit em straight.

The bigger G heads provide confidence for me, compared to i series.  I've owned plenty of both type, but always return back to the G.

Regarding G5, those are great clubs.  A smig more offset than the newer G's, and weaker lofts.  Actually, the loft spread is tighter, which some may like, and others not so much.

G5: 4-UW = 24* - 50*

G30: 5-UW = 24* - 50*

Personally, I like the G30 spread.

Did you ever play g25 irons? I have a set of g25 and g30 but I’ve never even hit the g30s because I like the g25s so much.

I think what Ping has done with their modern G series irons is to make a smaller package with the forgiveness of the G25 and G30 irons. I think if they were compared loft for loft performance would be practically the same. For me the g25s are the unicorn of forgiveness and feel.
